Hey everyone. I've been using Corel Painter for quite a while now but it still bugs me the way Painter manages layers. The only reason I still use it and haven't switched to Photoshop is because of the great blending I can achieve with Painter which I just can't manage to do with Photoshop. However, there are a lot of things that I can do with Photoshop which I can't do in Painter that's why I'm really trying to get a hang of it. I was wondering if you guys have any tips/tutorials that can help me achieve blending results in Photoshop similar to those in Painter (usually in Painter I blend with the 'just add water' tool). I have CS2.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I am not familiar with Painter at all I'm afffraid, so I can't make direct comparisons. However, photoshop has literally 100's of different ways to blend, layers, images, folders, groups, and paint strokes plus many other things too. If you simply to a Google search for photoshop blending tutorials or blending you should find plenty. It would also be an idea to purchase one of the fantastic Photoshop Bibles by Deke McClelland too. These cover advanced blending techniques in great details. Make sure you buy the Pro version though.

Otherwsie I always recommend online training by either Total training (if you can afford it) or instant access at Lynda.com.

Hope that helps some,

Jay

On screen Painter's blending looks great but in print I don't like it that much it's way to soft for my taste, Photoshop looks much sharper and to me better, blending in PS is easy just use the color picker (alt) while you use a brush set to opacity, you can also make a color swatch library and pick the values from there, to smooth everything use the airbrush here there, just a single touch with the global color it's enough.

Some people also use the smudge tool but I don't like it and it's way too slow on my system.

Thank you guys. I realize it's definitely different blending in PS but sometimes the results are totally worth poking the hell out of the Alt key, lol. I looked at this one tutorial and I've found it helpful playing with the brush 'Flow' while setting the Opacity to pen pressure. Is that right?

I would still like to see some tutorials that teach me more about Brush properties, etc. (As well as how to make custom ones, because I suck at that).

Thanks again!

I believe Nebezial posted this a while ago.

*Don't Forget To Turn the Spacing Off in the Brush Tip Shape Menu

No need to lift your pen up and down, just make small continuous strokes. I also like using a speckle brush too instead of the soft round. Good luck.
