Hi, I'm a noob on this forum and also green in terms of 3D modeling. Cool stuff on this forum!

Here is a character i'm working on. Please tell me what you think. It's not a terribly original one and it's my first one in Maya.

[UPDATE:: test walk on page 2 - HELP!]

Don't hold back on the crits, i need to learn! ;-)

noob? green? you have talent :bounce:

could we see a wire because there is nothing to crit at the moment :P

well... a bit about the textures maybe, but not the modeling
the skin is too shiny and there is a little too much bump mapp going on

Naaah - that can't be. You are no newbie... Naaaah... Cool character with character!

Give us come more [:D]

Thanx man! That really helps me to keep working on my skills! :)

I'm not doing this stuff for a long time yet (started in december...) so that's why i'm a noob... I hope to get really good one day but right now i've got a lot to learn...

Here a low-poly and a high-poly version in wireframe.

The only thing I can see is that sphere for his stomach. Maybe deform it a bit and add a few dips here and there, most stomachs aren't that spherical in shape, even if it is a huge beer belly. ;)

Real good, but maybe give the upper arm a lil bit more muscle... I can't wait to see it rigged :D

Nice work NOOB......HAHA
You've gotten the meat of maya. Wondering although, your method of "smoothing" are you softening edge normals or are you using the smooth option? I would only say that some of you geomemtry around the stomach area seems a bit dense. Nice work and the texture is great......
Lets see more/.............................

Wow! Very cool design. I like the stance, and really dig the hands. Very good work. I think that you might want to add a bit more to the texture. (Not sure if the color does justice to the model) I like the holocaust looking boils and growth on the legs. Look forward to updates.

Thanks everyone!

I'm now working on the rig. I'm planning to do a walk cycle or at least some posing with the character.

ArtGuru : The texture will probably have to be redone since it wont' bend and fold correctly :( Not very neat UVWs i guess. I will probably try another color scheme too.

Koinu: i used smooth polys. Is there another way? In Max you have 'smoothing groups' but how does this work with Maya? Thanks for the crit!

Nino: I tried to make the lower arm thicker than the upper arm but maybe i overdid that... Thanks for the tip!

Mattregnier: Yeah you're right. But i like to keep it really bulgy for this one. Could lose some polygons there i guess...

Thanks for the encouragement!

did u start building this model...from kinda box modelling or wht???????? U CANNOT BE n00b... plz dont lie... it will give me sleepless nites...cos i'm in 3D for more than yr and no where near u. :surprised

nice character.

the main things which come to my mind are the fingers (seem a bit deformed at the ankles) and the stomach to spherical and to many tris.

keep up the good work.
cheers mcf

Hi maxer!

I did it through box modeling, yes.

Well, i can only say: i did some non-organic modeling (spaceships) in Max 3 a few years ago but that really sucked, i didn't know how to edit polygons then so it was all boxes and boolean operators. Then i worked in a web company for three years and didn't do anything with 3d as i was too busy. And now i have 'a lot of free time on my hands' since december/januari so i started modeling using Maya in january/february, doing just about any tutorial i could find. But honestly, this is my first true model that is not from a tutorial and that is non-trivial. And it's not even rigged yet!

I started rigging the char today after doing some rigging and skinning tutorials. The process is really cool i think: the skeleton with its joint limits etc. I now have a rigged character but the skin has a lot of deformations, in the armpits, the legs etc.

I'm now going to look at 'vertex weighting' to weigh the skin. Any tips on how to do this in Maya is very much appreciated!

Here the imgs of a pose test. Theis is just the skin after applying the skin bind.

Oh, and the render is really sloppy. Just a test really.

interesting model... any orc ? So try to make better texture.. some reaslistic with specular..

Wow, your first model w/o tutor, and you've created this already
Very nice work man! Keep it up like this! Maybe some more detailed textures later on, like podoba said?

Ah well, this is very good as it is as well :)

Hey dude

Very nice work, for a noob ;););). The concept alone proves that you are no noob. You have anatomical knowledge, model knowlegde and drawing knowledge so cut the crapp.
Your motivation is your strongpoint here i see. From what i heard you use a lot of tut's and that is very good, it will get you bether. So i think you should work on this more, and with some more motivation, you will become a great artist.

But i still have to say that the model looks a bit sloppy. The muscle defination is very weak and it looks more lowpoly then high-poly to me. But still, keep working at it. :D:D:D

Hey thanks...

What exactly would you do to the sloppy model? More definition modeled in and for instance veins and such modeled? I thought to do that through texture... The model was done in lower res and then do the smoothing but i didnt model after that...

Anyone know how to change thread title by the way? It gives not the right impression although i still think that compared to the great 3d artists it is true.

Cool zoveel NL op dit forum overigens! Is er ook een NL forum/hangout oid?

hey dude

Very fast reply:D:D . Well, the muscles don't exactly stick out as they supposed to do. You need to at more poly's in your mesh, creat more edgeloops and make the muscles more buldge so they spring out( not to bulgy). Now the model looks like it is in it's early stage and i bet you have put some hard work in it. But work on it, look at other wireframes( check the general thread of Raul-Reznek and you know what i mean).

About th noob part, don't worry, i am still a noob in drawing and moddeling. You are definately no noob in drawing, that is for sure :D.

Just check my 2dthread caled Simmy SparkleCraft and you will see what i mean. :D:D

He max4d,

Thanx for the link... I thought it was in the General section so that's why i couldn't find it... Man that ref has a LOT of detail, i'm not sure to go that far ;-)

I also looked at your thread -- i like the shading but it may help to draw also heads more in perspective / different angles? Do you use that for 3d work btw? Where can i see some of ur 3d stuff?

Hi,

I finally got around and rigged the bastard up, smooth skin bind applied and vertex weights painted. Took me a while to get it somewhat right...

Now i see lots of problems with the skeleton and model (deformations...) but well, that will come next time. I just want to do some animations!

Here my test avi of a sort-of walk (blast render) -- 484 kb avi test avi (http://www.xs4all.nl/~erikedf/art/3d/testwalk.avi)

The animation is not very good, because for the life of me i do not understand IK ... I mean, how doe i rig the thing up in IK? The tutorials i tried all go completely through the roof on locators, helper objects and so forth, but why? And why those items? So the animation was done with FK only, hence the 'skidding' on the floor... The arms don't move coherently either but keep in mind it's my very first attempt at character motion.

Could someone shed some light on how and why to rig for IK? And could someone please enlighten me some more about the poses and clips you can make with maya for a character? What are they used for? Can they be stored separately?

Thanks!

Erik
