Wow it's been ages since I've posted anything on the forum :D

Lots and lots of work has kept me on websites and Flash and nowhere near enough time experimenting with 3D.

Here's a freeform (no reference) character I started a few days ago. Was partly too lazy to look for or draw reference, but just wanted to jump in with a blank slate and see where it all went....

He's a chinless wonder I know, that's deliberate, thinking he's a spineless, rather underhanded head of a thieves guild or something like that...basically wanted to break away from the idealised and anatomically correct head models I was striving for in the past (even though I have tons to learn when it comes to character modelling)

My first model in Lightwave3D, still trying to make the migration from Max, but loving it so far.....

Anyway enough waffle, here's a test render, gonna start painting his skin this weekend if I have time...comments and suggestions always welcome!!

Edit: Deleted bogus link to image....check my post below for (hopefully) working link

I like it. I'm particuraly fond of the bridge of the nose.

Looking cool, Nightwing :)

Although I think that the mouth could do with a little more work - maybe use the Bandsaw tool to get some more geometry to work with in that area.

Are you going to be modelling the entire character?

I think he suits his personality very well :D
He's definitely the kind of guy you'd expect to see running the Thieves Guild in one of Sierra's Quest For Glory games!

Out of interest, why did you switch to LightWave? It's just that it isn't a very widespread app here in SA.

Thanks for the replies guys

afimisf - Yeah that nose bridge was more of an accident than anything else, but I sorta liked it as well so it stuck :)

Leigh - Thanks V much. Yeah the mouth needs more detail, gonna freeze the mesh (something I learned recently) and then proceed to add more detail. Not sure if I will model the entire character, I'm hoping to complete a reasonably detailed head and then texture it to see how it goes.

Actually started playing dnd with some friends again and someone has a thief who is a real nasty piece of work, and I know he based him on some game characters as well :)

Not a definite switch to lightwave as such, we're doing more and more 3D stuff in the web company where I work, and while we have a copy of max (and I have been using that for a while), I'm borrowing a copy of LW from a friend who is a freelance 3D artist just to check it out.

Liking it V much I must say!

As usual Real Life has stopped me working on this dude for a while, but I've started painting the textures....Have also tweaked the mesh somewhat since the previous images I posted.....I know there are issues with how the fat fold under his chin meets the ear, I'm gonna work on that and the mouth corners (my nemesis) as well.....

In the meantime here are some new renders with slightly different lighting and hopefully better quality images.

Hope the links work ;)

:D that's exactly what he's meant to be....an ugly, unpleasant, snivelly, underhanded lil bugger....glad it comes across

I'm going to try my hand at saslite eventually once the skin is decent....

cheers

Alrighty....here's a quick test render of his skin.

Only had an hour or so to work on the skin so far before some web work became a priority

Anyway I plan to add lots more detail to his skin, and the spec/bump maps as well as eyes are temporary for now.

Updates soon (I hope)

Tweaked a whole bunch of things. I realise the stubble is stretching across his upper lip, the UV's need sorting.....

Adjusted the lighting quite a lot, and eyebrows are temporary, gonna see how saslite handles it.

Looks really cool, is his character going to be like Silas in the DnD movie....Im such a nerd, I know.

actually he's reminding me of the weasely belgian guy in the mummy... not that i'm a huge fan of the mummy, mind you... that was just the first thing that popped into my head. it's very good. i can see the forementioned traits in it already. :D my only thing, and (this is maybe something you just haven't gotten to yet) would be to dirty him up a little bit. if he's going to be a thief i think he should look a bit scrubbier. that's just me though.
very nice so far!

Thanks for the comments guys.

eMysfit: To be honest I don't recall a Silas from the DnD movie? There was Ridley the fighter/rogue, and Marlon Wayans' character, Snails. Is that who you're referring to? I don't see this guy as being flippant or having much of a sense of humour...he takes himself and his profession V seriously :)

ill_logic: Thanks and good point about dirtying him up. I plan to do that, as well as adding some nicks/cuts and possibly a bruise or two....he probably picked the wrong guy to pickpocket :D

At this stage I'm planning to model at least a torso for him, which will mean some clothing, which will help "define" him, so to speak.

Silas was the guildmaster that they had to get the eye of the dragon from. He was kind of a prick but all the other theives around there practically worshiped him.

But now that he mentions it, he does look alot like that guy from the mummy.

It does look really really cool though, better than I could ever do in a million years. I kind of like the texturing, but like he said he could use some dirt.

Some more tests.

changed his stubble somewhat, am toying with whether I should model some bristles on his chin, but that seems like a major PITA.

Here's translucency test, lighting needs tweaking if I am going to go this route.

Thoughts? Which version is better?

I'm not going for photorealism (as mentioned in a previous post) but I'd like to achieve a half-decent skin.
