On RenderMan Studio: I gues they didn't want to call it RAT (Renderman Artist Tools) anymore. ;)
Hopefully they'll have more info at the user group meeting.

>I gues they didn't want to call it RAT
you have no idea how much confusion this 3 letters acronym has been causing in the past 4 years...

I can't wait to get my hands on RfM 2.
Exactly what I was thinking!
So, is Renderman Studio a new suite or did they just do a name change?

Holly mother batman!! best news of the day !!
For those who are confused, renderman studio is in fact a renderman for Maya pro version, including RIB export and import, SLIM, and all the goodies that RAT had only include directly in maya.

RAT isn't so bad, its "RENDERMAN" which causes the confusion ;) "Hey I want to render with renderman" "You can't, RENDERMAN is an API, not a renderer" :D :deal:
I have been looking forward to using RMS.
mummey: RAT is dead (although still supported) and wont be a RAT7 release. Instead the MTOR features of RAT have been included into this release of RendermanStudio - as I understand it, they will be removed in the next version.

 :applause: :buttrock:
Good news!

Is for maya 8.5 (and 7.0, not 8.0). 2.0 is the plug-in' version.

To all developers out there: Never call a plugin * for (insert Application).
It's confusing everybody.
"Why would you need a Renderman Plug-in for Maya 1.0 in 2005?" :scream:

I don't understand some things... Pixar's web says that the RenderMan Studio 1.0 includes: RenderMan Maya Pro (is RfM?), Slim, Alfred and "it" and run under Linux. But later it says that RenderMan for Maya 2.0 just works under win and osx.
You can't work with whole RenderMan Studio under linux?
Thanks

Renderman for Maya2.0 is only for Windows and OSX
Renderman Studio 1.0 (which contains Renderman for Maya PRO) runs on Linux, Windows and OSX
So to answer your question, yes you can run the whole renderman studio on linux.
It's the other 'cutdown' product, Renderman For Maya, which doesn't run on linux.

I thought RfM = RfMPro
Thank for answer lotusexige :)

great news but one disapointment RFm2.0 and renderman studio will be available with renderman 13 and will not include the amazing features of 13.5, this is really bad for people who want the last technology available and not the past year 's one.

As far as I know RenderMan Studio 1.0 will support RIB creation for Pro Server 13.5 when it is released.

of course Rib will be supported in manual way but rederman 13.5 add new features which need improvment in the plugin itself and in slim, and couldn't deal with studio 1. but of course any rib from any version of renderman is the same code so it's work perfectly. the thing is pixar want to sell 13.0 license and after 13.5 upgrade, this is a commercial way that I don't really like.

Any example screens/renders or anything? I know pixar doesn't HAVE to show screenshots of the features in action because of their awesome reputation, and I'm pretty much sold anyway.
But I do like to be wooed a bit with pretty screenshots and examples before plunking down the money. C'mon, pixar, where's the romance? ;)

I can't tell, but does RfM 2.0 support Maya Fluid effects now? I thought I remember that Pixar said support would come in 2.0, but I don't see it listed.
Maybe they have Autodesk's new nFluids and are waiting for that to be released publically, instead of supporting Fluids now?

According to a pixar employee on their forums, fluids are not supported.

Thanks; I can't get to the forums. Too bad to fluid support yet.

fluids are only supported by renderman 13 with Ri_plugin approach to convert fluids so Rfm 2.0 doesn't support Ri_plugins or any DSO or shadops so it's not possible to convert and support fluids for that reason, but renderman studio could support fluids of course with a Ri_plugin.
I think some screen are available at pixar renderman page to show the new it and new slim in action. look at renderman studio info page on the pixar website.
about nfluids !!! man it's not again on a maya release so pixar will probably make a updated version of the plugin for maya 9 but it's too far away from now to speak about. Now it's time for pixar to release renderman 13.5 and I don't no much about pixar's futur plan about studio and rfm, maybe at the siggraph.
maybe at the siggraph.I think so too. I've seen the screenshot for M9 beta already so it can't be too far.

As RfM Pro is a replacement for MTOR, wouldn't it support plugins?

As RfM Pro is a replacement for MTOR, wouldn't it support plugins?
The setup looks like this:
RenderMan Artist Tools (RAT) - Suite of tools. Being replaced by RenderMan Studio 1.0.
RenderMan Studio (RMS) - suite of tools, replacing RAT.
MTOR - plugin (I believe), part of RAT. Tranlates Maya scene files and SLIM networks into RIB files and shaders.
SLIM - standalone procedural node-based shader manager, part of RAT/RMS. You can build shaders visually here.
it - standalone program for displaying images, part of RAT/RMS.
Alfred - standalone render job distributor, part of RAT/RMS.
RenderMan For Maya 2.0 - plugin renderer for Maya, like Mental Ray For Maya, Vray, Maya's own renderer, etc. Maya is required for it to work, but nothing else is needed. Not part of any suite of tools.
RenderMan For Maya PRO - plugin, part of RMS. Cannot be purchased separately.
RenderMan Pro Server (RPS) - standalone. This is the actual renderer, and doesn't require anything to run or use, but the other tools make it more convenient. All other tools (except RfM) are used in some way to generate files (RIB and SL shaders) that are then read by this renderer. Plugins can be written for it.
A plugin cannot support a plugin. For a plugin to work, it must have the host application running. That means that if you have a renderfarm, and you own RfM, the only way to render across the farm with it is to install Maya AND RfM on every machine, and both must be able to run. If you have Renderman Pro Server installed on all the machines, and some way to create RIB and SL files, you can render across the farm without needing Maya (or whatever) installed on every machine. There are many ways to create RIB files (heck you could type them yourself, it's ascii), but SL shaders, for use with Prman, must be compiled with Pixar's "shader.exe" utility that comes with RPS. One such way is to buy Renderman Studio. Other examples include Liquid and MayaMan. Other RenderMan compliant renderers have their own shader compiler but the SL language is mostly the same, as is the RIB.
If you wanna play with RenderMan without all the confusion and money, try 3Delight.

exactly all is in the last answer...
Renderman for maya and renderman for maya pro are really different, they have the same architectural core but Rfm pro could deal with a lot of things than rfm can't, I mean plugins, melscripting, rsl programing in hypershade, advanced features, rib of course ....
This is the same rendering quality of Prman 13 but not the same potential, Rfm is none just a lite version of RFm pro, it's like a basic integrated renderman with mainly features.
Rfm is good for small studio and RFM pro is for big pipeline with a renderfarm, TD's... and of course RFM is 995$ and studio 3500$ with prman 13.
as kemijo said if you don't want to pay for the lovely best renderman feature, 3deligth is the best free alternative with gelato 2.1.
about maya 9, we are beta testing it a this time but don't know much about pixar's plan. I think it's pretty early to give some bet about a next release one week after the release of rs 1.0. maya 9.0 should be come out at the end of this year, they have the time to think about that. see you next year for a next RS or RFM release. ;) ( And with luck no delay this time... outch....)
