Hello everyone, my name is Itay, I'm 27 years old and I'm from Israel. I'm currently working as a compositing artist in an animation studio here in Israel.

After doing some reading in the anatomy forums in the past few weeks i've finally started to draw again (I haven't drawn anything for a year now).
The forums here are very informative and I think Rebecca is doing an amazing job.

Anyway, following the " Anatomy Resources: BOOKS" thread I've ordered two very good books from Amazon:

1."Artistic anatomy"by Paul Richer.
2. "Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle.

I'm starting with copying parts of the master's work on the 2nd book as Rebecca recommended. For now I'm mainly focusing on the eyes and nose. I'm trying to get back in shape where it comes to holding a pencil while figuring the perspective and form. Each copy takes me about an hour and a half so I try to do one every day (I'm pretty tired after work ).

I'll try to update at least twice a week and I hope to get some feedbacks and comments (I know I haven't commented in other people's thread but I'll will! starting tomorrow)
So… here are a few scans from the sketchbook:

i'm not really happy with it and i think i'll go back to copying from drawings instead of photos.

Hi...Itay...

Very nice start to your thread....:applause:
I think you have made a wise choice to stick to working and studying from the master drawings rather than from photos. You will learn a whole lot more from them in all areas in the end..:)
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR STUDIES AND PROGRESS...

Intervain - thank you, i really admire your work so it means a lot :buttrock:

i wasn't sure about posting this here, but after doing 2d sketches for a week i figured that this project I've made in zbrush two months ago should be here. it was a huge challenge sculpting this 3d model from a painting. and besides...i never showed it to anyone and i'll probably never finish it. anyway, enough 3d for now, back to sketching :)

Itay.

hi theflash, thank! about the sketch book i use a A4 acid paper "papyrus" sketchbook. nothing too fancy. i use simple "ADEL" pencils (Ab, 4b and 6b). i scan the papers with my hp printer then add color and contrast using photoshop. thats about it.

Hi Itay, good start for your sketchbook. The figures look nice and well in proportion. You might want to work more on your line quality: try to work with clear and well defined lines. The Zbrush sculptire looks really nice too. Keep 'em coming!

I'm back.. i've been pretty busy lately i hope i'll have some time to do some more drawings this week. here are some quick sphere sketches (2-5 min) of characters from the "great masters" book.

hi! i'm back again :D, i hope that this time i'll have time to post new stuff on regular bases.
this is someting i'm working on. its a model based on durer's "artist's mother" drawing.
i started with a model in 3dsmax and moved to zbrush. i wanted to share some wip and maybe get some tips on how to improve it.

Your 15 minute gesture sketches do a great job of capturing the essence of the pictures, certainly much better than all of my attempts, and I think it's really cool the way you've measured and gone for the proportions. Maybe take a few liberties to push the pose a bit futher?

There's really nice work here! Some great shaded heads and your Zbrush work is stunning!

hey thek, thank for taking the time to comment about the images. i'm glad you like them and i think you're right about the 15 minutes sketches. i need to do a lot more of those and practice more. maybe I'll have some time on the weekend.
here is an update on the zbrush model. I'm not sure where I'm going with this one and pretty happy with the result so i think I'll stop here and try a different one.

Hi
about your gestures... if you can, get that Vilppu gesture DVD It was a revelation to me (and I think to many who saw it for the first time)

In the post where you show the details of the mouth on your Zbrush model... teeth are not put on top of the gums but they are solidly stuck into the skull and the gums are covering them to protect the attachment. This means the forms of the teeth should be visible underneeth the teeth as well, at least to some degree.

There is something about the eyes of your witch model... sorta feels like the bottom is skewed more in front than the top side... hard to explain.
It looks awesome already though!

Great work here
Hope to see more soon!

I'm guessing you're talking about the king crimson model i did. well i don't think I'll go back to that but do i agree about you're comment. the original painting is far from being an anatomically correct drawing. most of the exercise for me was to try and build a 3d model out of a 2d painting. you can see the finished work here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=558927

i fixed the eyes in the old lady model and added some more detail, here's an update

hi again.
i know i haven't been very active in the anatomy forum lately cause i've been too busy with work. but thats about to change! cause I've quit my day job :) and I'm gonna take some time off for a few weeks before starting some freelance work. I've decided to try and learn as much anatomy and practice my sketches in the next few weeks, its going to be my new day-time job . I'm hoping to try all kinds of stuff like clay sculpting, zbrush sculpting and lots of sketch book drawing. so for the next month or two I'll update regularly and try to critic and comment on other people's work as well.
anyway, I'm still working at the studio until Thursday but I've started doing some quick character sketches after not touching the sketchbook for over 2 months. i was surprised to find out that i've learned a lot from zbrush durer sculpture i did and the other master copies I've done a few months ago. comments are welcome of course :)

Nice work on the skulls. :) Keep pushing the rendering. Good to see you doing the ALS heads series, I'm using the same ref in my noobish ZBrush efforts. ;) I think the main thing I'd recommend for both you and me is to focus on gesture in the Zbrush sketches - I'm having a hard time too getting the general shapes and am trying to accomplish what others are advising, which is to focus on the bigger shapes before details. It's tough. :D I've just decided not to spend too long on any one sculpt. In my class we've been asked to do 20 sculpts based off of a provided basemesh, and I'm trying to get better by just pounding them out and not worrying about polish. Good luck to both of us! :)

itayg
06-27-2008, 09:03 AM
hi rebecca, i've learned a lot from the zbrush head i've done. mostly on how to draw/sculpt face features. i still have a problem with the overall shape of the head. so i'm taking the advice you gave me a few weeks ago on looking into the underling structure. thats why i'm trying to draw the skull (maybe i'll try to sculpt one..but i'll need good references for that).

i've tried pushing the rendering on the skull and found out some stucture problems (mainley in the side view) so i fixed that using the "liquify" tool in photoshop (it works more or less like the move tool in zbrush). here are the updated sketches.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/shakey3d/skull02-side.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/shakey3d/skull02-front.jpg

i'll try my best to implement your advice on not going into details and focus on the general shape. thank you so much for the tips.
and good luck ;)

Hi Itay,

You have very interesting and expressive 3D works. I love the head from last page that looks like it is carved from wood. Nice to see some skull studies. I wanted to point out that from all the side view pictures of skulls I've seen, there is a sizable gap between the last teeth and the inner wall of jaw bone. But then I am no expert and maybe your skull has wisdom teeth. Keep it up and show us more!

itayg
06-28-2008, 03:51 PM
hi Heozart, thanks but i don't think i'll fix that skull sketch. that was my first try and i prefer trying new ones while learning from past mistakes.
here are a few sketches i did last night looking at reference plates in one of the anatomy books i have.

a friend of mine bought the freedom-of-teach mastering the human skull dvd (http://www.freedomofteach.com/products/dvds/dvd_human_head_skull/dvd_human_head_skull_overview). he used it to sculpt a real clay skull so i didnt think it was any good for zbrush sculpting. turns out its pretty easy to follow and very well explained even if you are not workign with clay.
so i got the first dvd from him and made this in a few hours. ones i'll get the second disc from him i'll try to complete it.

I'm more of a 70's era fan of his work, i think that no other singer-songwriter can play the piano like him. especially in this album and in "small change" from 1976.
anyway i think I've had enough of this one. i like it as it is, didn't really want to make it too realistic but rather keep it some what expressive.

Coming along nicely I say!

I liked him better without the mustache
what's he looking at? It kinda seems like he is being stabbed in the back with a knife to me. In that case I would open the mouth slightly to emphasize the "unexpectedness".
It would help if you could come up with a story for this man, who apparantly seems to be from a somewhat higher class

itayg
10-23-2008, 07:46 AM
yeah you're right, coming up with a story at this point is crucial for this piece. cause once i'll get tired of painting i'll just leave it unless i'll know where i'm going with it.
i like the stab in the back idea. but i'll have to change the face expresstion if i do somthing like that. i'll try to post an update tonight. more concept/story wise.

thanks NR43.

anandpg
10-23-2008, 01:05 PM
I am not so sure Itay, but I think the softer values and loose treatment gives it a nice dreamy impressionistic feel.. also, I love the strokes around him, which make the figure blend into the background.

itayg
10-23-2008, 01:32 PM
i agree about the strokes in the background and i planned on adding that layer back later.
as for the character i need to think of a way to soften some of the features. and still keep a strong appeal.
i have alot of spare time to work on it on the weekend now that my girlfriend went on a 2 week trip to the states

itayg
10-27-2008, 11:00 PM
well... had a few hours this evening to have play around with this painting. fixed some elements, removed others and added new ones.
the general concept is: the character (which is more of a high-class late 19th century man) looking (surprised/angry) at his glass while a creature (some sort of a fantasy creature) is resting on it.
I'm not sure about the creature design yet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/shakey3d/sketch006.jpg

anandpg
10-28-2008, 03:11 AM
Wow, Itay! This is getting more interesting! The head part of the creature is really cute.. The body could probably be made more beautiful.. A longer tail with a flourish or something, maybe.. just a suggestion. :D I think this is going to be an awesome piece. Do you plan to color it?

itayg
10-28-2008, 08:26 AM
thanks anand. yeah i need to work on the creature design. i like idea that his tired and sad. like he sat down on the glass to get some rest. i'll try to work on it some more tonight after work and post something. i am planing on painting it sure. still have a lot of work on tha man's jacket also.

Heh that creature/bird came out really nice

It seems a bit sad.. perhaps because it knows that if it will try to drink the wine, it will fall into it and drown (or end up really drunk LOL)

I think you could still push the lighting further, but I think you already achieved the mood you were after in this piece so yes, perhaps wrapping up and moving on is a good idea :)

Well done, looking forward to see what you'll come up with next

hey killermachine, thanks for the tip. i agree with every word. i do need to start using anatomy books more.

I've actually started going to life drawing class this week. we are having a small class at work once a week for 2-3 hours. i really sucked for the first time and felt really rusty but i'm sure it'll improve later on. i'll post some sketches from the first class we had later.

this evening i've made myself sit down and fill up a page with sketchs . i've had fun with it and spend about 3-4 hours to fill up the whole page. i'll try to do more of these on the weekend.

Hey Itayg. You've got an interesting sketchbook here. I didn't have the time to go through the whole thing today, but I went through a few pages and it seems that you've got a creative mind, and a good handle on your fundamentals.

Right off hand the only thing that jumps out at me is you seem to lack confidence in your ability to wield your (wacom, I'm assuming). It looks like your strokes are short and nervous, and it seems that you're using too small of brushes for the areas you're painting.

Your textures on the other hand are good, and interesting.

Keep at it, looking good :)

aethalin: thanks! i'll have another session next wedensday so i'll post more then.

damn I'm so pissed off right now. photoshop crashed on me after 3 hours of work..:cry:
anyway I'm working on a new personal project. something i want to do in 3d since i didn't do any 3d at home for a long time.
the main concept is an old man standing under a tree, holding a little kid's backpack on his shoulder and a watergun in the other hand. behine him theres a little kid hanging from a branch and in the middle of throwing a bird's nest on the old man's head (probably his grandpa). what i lost in the photoshop crash is the tree and the kid... so i'll redo that later

this is the grandpa's design

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/shakey3d/gardian001.jpg

comments are welcome
i'll post updates

itay

itayg
12-06-2008, 06:16 PM
progressed a little more with the concept and design today. since i lost my kid's drawing yesterday i drew a new one and added a girl sitting on the tree. the main concept now is more of a "day in the park" theme. trying to create a connection between 4 characters right before the action happens (the kid throwing the nest on the old men).
the 4th character is the old man's dog which i still need to complete. the idea is to have the looking at the girl on the tree. and by that i can make a 'circle' of where each character is looking.
comments are welcome. i'll update later

itayg
12-06-2008, 09:30 PM
hi monica, thanks. i'm glad you like the design.

I'm trying to push things a bit further before going into 3d. usually when i do 3d stuff my concept is not 100% there and then i start tweaking stuff as i go and come up with something completely different then what i intended in the beginning.
so no more! hehe
here is another update on the position of the dog. i still need to work on the design of the dog and the kid's face which i'm not happy with. and also all the character's cloths need some more well..character :)

i'll update soon

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/shakey3d/gardian003.jpg

itayg
12-09-2008, 09:04 PM
had a really hard week. my aunt past away at age of 47 after one year of fighting cancer. during this week i didn't draw at all. i was thinking of the funeral day which was quite traumatic for me and for my family. spending hours in bed at night thinking about death. about life after death and all kind of things like that.
that's why when i came back yesterday to this drawing i was working on i couldn't help but look at it at a more symbolic approach. looking at what each character symbolizes and try to really push the story further.

so the main concept i have right now it the man (the old man standing) which is pretty much oblivious to what happening around him is tied with a dog leash around his legs. behind he's back is the small kid that represents bad/evil (devil) about to act on his bad deeds (throwing the bird's nest on the old man's back). above the man's head is the girl representing the good/guardian angel trying to prevent the bad thing from happening.
but the man is too occupied with he's legs being tied up. but what's holding the other side of the leash is the man's own shadow, representing he's weakness, his preoccupation with the past. he his just too self observed.

i could use some feedback to try and see what other people think of this concept before i go in to deep with a concept that's too confused or banal.
thanks

i guess I've become more harsh with stuff i make :arteest: cause i've done a lot of deleting and re-painting on this one...
but I'm pretty happy with the result for now (maybe I'll complete the one on the top left)

I've joined a drawing class this week which takes place once a week for 4 hours.
the group is a part of a school (http://www.jssart.com/pages/aboutjss.htm) that mainly focuses on Figure drawing (which attracts people from all over the country since its the only school in Israel that teaches figure drawing in a classic approach).
it was my first time there so i took me a while to start sketching without looking around the class at how better than me everyone else are :argh:
anyway, here are some charcoal sketches I've done (about 5-10 minutes each)

the charcoal carravaggio study is really nice!

concerning drawing with a leaded pencil, I think you need a more subtil approach.
Most of these doodles in the last post have no sense of light depicted. Try to think about where you add more tone and why you add it in those particular places.

Don't forget, you can always use a kneadable eraser to get some highlighted areas.

Keep sketching!

itayg
04-26-2009, 12:02 PM
hi Johan. thanks for the feedback.
actually that's not a pencil so i cant use an eraser. is a pen that's very thin so it makes you do a lot of strokes in order to darken areas. i like it cause it creates interesting textures but i still need to learn how to use it properly for creating better lighting.
I'll post some more stuff soon.

thanks Johan. that's a great quote.
and thanks Gordon, glad you like it :)

i went to drawing class tonight for the 3rd time. had a really great time. the teacher is really good. we did a 5 minutes live drawing and after the first one he stopped us and said "i want you all to look at the pages and think if this is how you would have drawn if you knew its the last 5 minutes you have to live".

and something else he said to a women drawing next to me "don't be afraid to fix the drawing. i prefer to see the deleted part that was fixed than to see the mistake"
just wanted to share that :p

so here are the 5 minute ones (sorry for the bad quality but its too big to scan):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/shakey3d/012jss.jpg

and the 2.5 hour one (a lot of re-sketching and re-doing in this one, but that was the point of the exercise)

Excellent sketchbook!
I really have to try that cubic thing out. I tend to shade certain things certain way, no matter what the lighting is. For example, the tip of the nose is bright and under eyebrows it is dark. That technique might help me learn out of that.

Anyways, you have a nice light and dream-like touch in your pictures :3
Keep up the great work!

Juho - thank you. i'm glad you like it. I've learned about working in simple shapes while i was in drawing class last year. we were working with charcoal and were explained how to think in simple shapes and focus on proportions and weight while using the light direction as a sculpting tool more then a rendering tool. it helps me a lot when approaching cartoon sketches because i always start from scribbles so i try in the beginning to make things simple. good luck :)

JMART - thanks. i'm thinking about making a 3d version of that character. i'll see if i'll find the time. and yes its pen on paper.
