I would like to point out a slight clarification to the point that "Virtual Earth goes 3d" is slightly misleading as it has always been 3d. There have been 3d buildings and elevations in the maps since a very long time. Now what the company is trying to do is to let end users contribute to the scene by uploading their own 3d models to improve and extend the content already available....

thats what google earth already has, way too much work , cant they automatise the proces , if you take 2 pics just with a slight delay a computer should be able to calculate the height info acording to perpective changes. it will be only like a bumpmap but it will be better then flat pictures and cover the whole world. surely someone at microsoft must be able to pull this trick.

Yeah, the post title is off, but I thought this was particularly interesting:
Dassault Systhmes also plans a business side to the 3dvia community, called SupplierSource, to help designers find manufacturers for their products. The SupplierSource site, which the company said will appear at http://www.suppliersource.3dvia.com/, is not yet live.
For some people, this might be a way into the toy industry.
