Hi all,

Have come across a little job that requires some flash banners for the web. NOw i don't use Flash, but am very familier with AE. I was wondering how good/efficient is AE at outputting a banner sized movie in a flash format?

Cheers,

Well... most flash banners require reasonably heavy action scripting (loading controls, advertiser specific scripts, onclick actions, user interactions etc) and AFX won't really enable you to include these. My rule of thumb would be unless the banner is nigh on 100% video, buld it in flash (or get someone to build it), afx isn't designed as a web authouring tool, so dosen't take into account using text as vectors (I think) and generally has a tendancy to rasterise everything and therefore have whacking great filesizes.

Flash can output SWF files that are pretty much the same as if they were created in Flash, but you have to very closely follow the rules or, like Droolz mentioned, it will rasterize everything and create a massive file. You can't use any motion blur for starters, and all elements need to be within the same composition - subcomped items are automatically rasterized no matter what they are (text, etc). There is a host of other things that need to be taken into account, so you really should do a Google search to find out more.

The first thing you need to do is find out what the file size limit is for the banners, most ad vendors require banners to be under a certain size (like 20kb).

Seriously: AE is crap at that. For CS3 they fixed the cue point export, but beyond that no dice. Export whatever you need as an uncompressed format and do all authoring and video compression in Flash. If that doesn't get you what you need, find someoen who does Flash all day. Even if you won't make as much money because you have to pay the guy, it will be better than making an ass of yourself by struggling with AE's inadequacies and not delivering the goods to your client.
