Finally got a concept image for my animation. I had an idea about three menacing monsters busting out of this girl's closet and then going on to do the most docile of things. Like eating all her food and Playing cards. hehe. Next comes some storyboarding and turn arounds.

Hey, nice sketch! That girl looks uber-cute! They should be playing with her dolls, that would be strange!
EDIT: That "monster" on the right looks pretty normal, as far as creepy and skinny bald head guys go... The others look really cool.

He he...cool concept. You have a nice drawing style that I hope will translate well into 3d.

Good luck!

Sorry for the lack of updates, bleh! I am working very hard on this project, and I'm very excited about it.

Here are some concepts I've been drawing. Most of them failed design aspects and proportions.

I like this guy hehe.

I decided to can this guy and re-do him. Didn't think he was menacing enough and the hooves would have been to much to rig.

Started modeling work on the girl. I really need some help with the topology!
Especially in the shoulder area and on the face. I know her nose is not much but a gaping hole, but any other crits would be great!

If anyone has some critiques on the body as well, I would be most abliged!

Modeling her room, without texture. Have to light it properly.

http://www.studiowhitesnow.com/artwork/concepts/literoom.jpgtrying to light her room is not working at all. I wanted it to be moonlight coming from the window, and the whole room have a blue/nighttime tint. It's very frustrating, but I'm trying to work through it.

After a while of tweaking lights I've finally got something close to what I want for her bedroom. I like how the shadows look on the items in her room. I added in alot more detail to make it seem more populated.

I think that your objects have a bit too strong colours for that kind of light
there's a saying "in the night all cats are gray"
in moonlight you will never see such a deep blue carpet.
I would try to lower the saturation of the textures a bit, maybe it'll look better then, and maybe also slightly lower the saturation of the light itself (but not too much)
models are very nice so far.

Excellent atmospheric lighting! Looks very nighttimish!
Are you using final gather here?
:)

ania- thanks for the good advice! That is probably a good idea. I guess I just really love colors, and I wanted the animation to be pretty vibrant and cartoony. But I will desaturate it and see how much better it looks.

Varma - No actually I'm just using Maya software. I was trying to use mental ray and global Ill., but I found my render time was 10 min + a frame, and I would never finish rendering in time. While my software render time is less then 20 seconds. Thank you for the compliments!

about render time - you could bake the GI into the textures, then it wouldn't cost render time. I don't know how that's called in maya, I guess texture baking or render to texture.

Thanks for the input Ania! I think I'm going to stick with software render for now though. I'm getting much closer to the results I want with depth map shadows, then I can with Mental ray right now (I'm really not that expereinced with it and I'd rather focus on animation in this challenge, then spend a week tweaking the settings)

Here are the storyboards I drew up. I'm going to do a rough animatic soon with placholder models, so I can get all my shots down. I hope these boards make sense :) they do to me, but maybe someone else might find them confusing.

I also modeled some more of her house outside the bedroom today. The living room and kitchen, though I still have a bunch of little furniture and small thing to place inside. Don't mind what's there, it's just placeholders ^^

I did spend a while getting the lighting right. I think it's finally close to what I want.

Oh, that is nice! I really like what you got going here - the coloring and lighting works real well. Concept and story are cool too

I LOVE your storyboards. I clearly got the emotions and feeling of your characters from these drawings. I love the shot where they're coming out of the wardrobe, very nice very scary lighting. With that lighting, might be nice to see an exaggerated low angle camera shot of them so they're looming over the viewer more.

As far as GI light goes, my personal preference is to not use it. I'm a firm believer in using traditional lights in a 3 point setup for quick render times. I'd suggest maybe using a little bit more ambient fill light of some kind, just to soften up the darkest areas.

Can't wait to see some animation! Keep it up!

Hi Ashley,
So I had to check out your stuff since you gave me such great feedback, and I've gotta say, this is really inspiring! Are you going to finish this piece? I really think you should, I think it's a really strong story and you've already got such great models going. The storyboards are fantastic, by the way; very easy to read and well-drawn!

Good luck with this, and keep us all posted on your progress!

(Monsters, Inc. is amazing, by the way, and no doubt an inspiration for you as well!)

"...BUT...BUT! I just wanted to say that I'm not a complete braincase, okay! I understand completely that it's all just a television show."
"Brandon. Brandon! It's all real."
"...I knew it. I KNEW IT!"

Okay, sorry, I had to.

It's been a while since the last update! Hope you got some cool renders to show soon!
The storyline is quite promising, would be cool to see those critters in night light!
:)
