View Full Version : Model. Violin
TNTJack 03-20-2003, 11:18 PM It is a wip, and I would appreciate any crits or comments. The most difficult part will be the scroll at the end of the head, which I honestly donīt know wether I will be able to do it, but I will try.

This is a texture test. I know I should not bother texturing it, but I wanted to see my progress.
Thanks

your texture at the edges are stretching.

Hi TNTJack,
It's looking really good!
The bridge looks a little like the bridge for a cello, rather than a modern era violin. But maybe you're modeling a violin from the baroque era? (I woudln't know much about this.) I think I'd also make the "lip" of the outer rims just a tiny bit thinner (thinner in the direction of back to front).
Can I ask how you modeled the violin's top surface? NURBS, sub-d? I ask becuase I also modeled a violin, and had to work pretty hard to get the top curve correct. I think there must be a simpler way than I how I did it? I'd love to see some wires.
Sincerely,

P.S. You can see the violin I modeled, and how I did it at:

I haven't learned texturing, so it's a simple render.

I agree that the bridge looks a little too high. Violin bridges are a little more 'squished' at the base than yours is. I guess do a search on google for some reference photos. You should be able to find some good ones.
Are you working with a real violin as reference? If so, does the real violin have its fingerboard like that? What I'm looking at is where the fingerboard is actually overlapping the top of the body. In your picture, the fingerboard looks really thick. Take a look at this photo of an Amati violin. Notice how thin the fingerboard is all the way down.

Also, it doesn't look like, at least from this angle, that your F-holes have any notches in them. Right now they look like S-holes.
I like the wood you've chosen. It's pretty funky looking.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your replies!

"your texture at the edges are stretching."
I know, it was just a test to see how the model looked when textured.
Chiral:
You are an artist! your modelling is brilliant.
I am working from a few reference pics I found at Google, but many of them are from different violins and violas, and I suspect that the bridge is actually from a viola. I think that I will modify the original spline to make it wider and shorter. I am going to do the lips a bit thiner too.
A big "cheat" that I did is to model those lips separately, by lofting a square with rounded corners through the outline I traced from the pics. In that way, they hide the real edges of the main body, which are not accurate at all. I am a newbie (unlike you, I have to say), and I thought that way would be easier for me.
I am hopeless at NURBS, so I did it by box modeling, and then poly modeling and meshsmooth. Here is a wireframe of the main body (without lips):

Hey thatīs one of the ref pics I am using!
You are right about the bridge, I will correct that, and the thickness of the fingerboard (probably I will have to rebuild that when I finally decide to try to model the violin head.
And about those notches... they were so small that I missed them!
I will post some updates when there are some. I only have time for 3D a few hours per week, so it may take some time.
See ya!
lets see it at some more angles - that's an awkward angle to get a good look...

thats a great start so far, I really like it :) its so simple, yet very graceful looking. Sweet job so far, wish I could offer you a crit on violins, but I'm no expert in that department.
look forward to more of this:buttrock:

Well, I managed to model the head/finger board. They are made in a single piece, as a whole. I will have to do some minor changes on it, which means a lot of work. It has been done manually, polymodelling.
I made the outer rims a 20% thiner.
I also changed the bridge. The old one was from a viola!
The render has some artifacts, I donīt know why that happened.
