Been a long time I haven't post here, but I didn't have much time to spend on my short until recently. Here's May with a quick and dirty skinning. I have yet to refine it before playing with facial expressions. By the way she's supposed to be between 10 and 12.

very nice! Her legs seem a little bit bony/too thick for a 12 year old. They look too defined. Looking at her from the waist down and she looks 25, waist up and she looks 12.

Looking forward to the facial expressions.

Spady,

Many people tries to make anime characters, but none come as cute as yours.

Can you tell us what is your techniques to model her face look so cute? Did you have a reference? How long did it take for you to make her so from not-cute, to cute, to very cute?

What in your opinion makes an anime model/character look cute?

If there is a CGTalk Cute award, Spady's May is the winner.

:surprised

Very nice work Spady! I don't know much about it, but the imagination, style, and detail that's poured into the "anime/manga" titles always amazes me. The clothing is well done and I like the orange plaid color scheme. You have done an excellent job of transfering the 2d anime style to 3d.

What i've noticed is that the extremely large eyed anime characters are harder to do in 3d because there is less room to naturally place the zygomatic(cheek bone) and cheek fat (I've also found this with some of the american cartoon styles). The nose contour blend into the brow and the lips is difficult because the 2d styles often omit shading/contour in that area. Anime artists like Adam Warren (Dirty Pair, Gen 13) and Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma) draw in this style. Often only the angle of the nose is addressed and even the nostrils are omitted. Are the nostrils implied or are they just not there at all? How "doll-like" should the face be before it changes to an unnatural/alien form? The literal translation of the 2d anime character can end up looking like E.T. (alien-like) because the lighting and contour is more literal in 3d computer graphics and sculpture. The sculpted kits out there help me to understand the translation methods. Magazines like Hobby Japan and Replicant are a BIG help.

The other option is making the anime character slightly more realistic. This seems to be a more successfull technique. Final Fantasy and Resident Evil are examples of this. It's more in the style of anime artists like Ryoichi Ikegami (Samurai Crusader, Sanctuary, Crying Freeman). Spady appears to have made this choice as well, but I can't speak for him/her....

Very nice. I love that style. Its anime but its not the exact typical style of most anime whch is good! It has a very realistic feel but yet retains slight cartoony edge.

Saying that this is good is just a massive understatement. The geometry, and textures are incredibly professional, and even scarier is that you said the skin is still somehat dirty.

There is one thing though, which is the face. It's beautiful and perfectly formed, but not really suitable for a girl of ten or twelve. I think that it would go great on teenagers body of maybe sixteen or so, but perhaps not with the current body.

Other than that, you've done a wonderful job of capturing the "anime" look.

Thx for your comments.

I am afraid I have to agree with some of you, she does look older than she is supposed to be. I will fix this issue later this weekend, before going further in my mistake... Mmmh, so much work awaiting for me... :)

proton: I don't have that much to show, I have little time to work on my personnal project, and what I do with my job isn't something I am really proud of....

vorlon&artistx: I have been influence by a lot of japanese artists, but I think it would be meaningless to list all of them.

Master Spady,

Will you share your secret to creating cuteness? Few has obtained the power to creating 3D cuteness, yet you master has achieved it.

Master Spady, when will you share how you master the power of making cuteness in 3D? How long did it take you to attain the state of making cuteness? Thou shall share your secret, shall you? Or is it a closely guarded secret? Please pass on your sacred knowledge, Master Spady, yours truely is envious of your skill in cuteness. This mundane pupil wish to attain your state of cuteness skills.

lovely smile, you´ve done a great job on the modeling.

something is bothering me in the knees, i think that for a girl of her age the knees arent quite in the usual position, the should be thicker, and a little higher.
besides that, is simply awsome.
congrats

Wow, I missed her completely while I was gone..glad you updated..this is too sweet! :xtreme:

As everyone's already said, her face is awesome..I really like the composition and everything in the new pic too..looks like a moment right out of an anime series, her walk vs. the robot's is fabulous, and I really like the robot's design as well, hilarious. Can't wait to see this fully completed.

Walee: So you happen to know el Mojo? Looks like the world is so small :)

Hypercube: glad to hear that somebody actually like the design of the robot, which is pretty old. I made it something like 3 years ago, when I started to think about the story. I thought it may not be on par with the other elements (and I am too lazy redesigning it:)

DKM: Hi man, I will try to visit you on the chan someday, but as of now, I focus mainly on my personal work :)
Chatting is bad and overly time consuming :)
