I think it’s high time for me keep up with everybody.

My concept: Capturing superhero’s sticky situation and presenting It in a humor way.

We all knew that superheroes had a hard time meeting both ends of their lives; keeping their identity secret and dealing with their personal life as ordinary being at the same time pursuing their mission to keep the world safe.

Thus, here’s my idea for my superhero’s adventure on such situation.

great idea: just i, too, would love to see it telling the story without having to lean partly on the use of text.

a few alternatives:
* mother tapping a watch
* mother holding up clean underwear
* mother trying to give him a packed lunch
* mother giving him a pack of condoms ;P

As of writing these notes, the time left before the competition ends is: 35 days, 8 hours, 47 minutes, 2 seconds…Gulp. I really need to hassle up.

Before I kick off allow me to post my recent endeavor. Yes, I killed the color information; I will let Photoshop recalculate fresh color info as I progress.

Here goes the bloody part: Finalizing stage.

But before commencing, i first laid base color over grayscale and I am considering adding texture and some specular highlights on hero’s outfit.

Nothing cool updates as of the moment, just added a hexagonal texture over my base color that warps and follows the contour of the muscles. Second, I applied primary and secondary specular highlights on the suit.

Hi Von,

That's a very funny idea, and very familiar problem to almost every person: struggle to get away from the mammy's dominance... Just some people are a bit late with that, and too frightened to get their freedom, just like your superhero! :)

Though, I must agree with others about the text...

Good luck!

I had a blast working on this part of my piece.

I am happy on how it turned out.
Especially the hair effects and its translucency, i like the way how lights wraps the edge of the hair, though it needs more tweaking but it's a nice start.

I extend great deal of attention on skin texture and mask also.

Hope you guys enjoy as much as i enjoyed working on it.

It’s high time to pull those comments into action.

I have here series of ideas on how to translate best those comments regarding the signs.

SteevieWoo
10-09-2007, 06:37 AM
Wow great ideas! I think any of this works better than the signs, but I must say I thik it is all abut the pants! always a great comedy device, so the lower right mommy just cracks me!! she looks like not only she wants him to wear them, but she will put them on him if she has to!! very realistic mom attitude!! yay!:D

The knob sign is a good detail too, but is hard to read and crowds a busy area, what if you cheat and put the knob on the right side of the door?, there's nothing going on there and perspective could give you an excuse to make it bigger...

Love the suit texture, a very 'hero-movie' trend....

i still think there is a little too much information - the best pictures often have quite simple ideas, whereas there is a lot going on, i.e. the mother holding jeans AND lunchbox AND there is a little sign on the door, AND there is a to-do list

i think it would be just as effective to have her simply holding out the jeans / lunch box :D, without the extra signs and so on. and i prefer her standing on the floor, it makes it so obvious how short she is and therefore amusing that her son is so huge in comparison yet terrified of her :D

p.s. absolutely fabulous shading, i love the superhero's face :D

Hi, I'm sorry I missed your picture as well - this forum moves really fast.

I love how you have put the fantastical into the domestic - it makes a good contrast. And the granny is superb - the coke-bottle glasses and bulging eyes are a great comedic touch.

If there is one thing that looks a little odd to me, it is the thumb of the 'superhero' - it looks to me like it is either too high or at the wrong angle. Probably not an issue in a fully cartoon picture, but the granny is quite realistic. Maybe it just needs a bit more definition to separate the index finger from the thumb?

Another little idea, but might the blackboard read "Today's chores" rather than "Tomorrow's Chores" - like he is trying to leave without having done them?

And really nitpicking, but I think the transition from green to blue on the background wall interfers a bit with the outline of the superhero's profile around the nose and mouth. Could you maybe raise the green line a bit higher so that there is solid colour behind that area of the superhero?

Hehe, is that a little bit of spit coming out of the superhero's mouth? Your picture makes me smile the most - all the best for the finish

walrus
10-22-2007, 11:17 PM
Nice to see how this is coming along. You've really done a great job touching on all fo the small details. Well done!
One thing that you might want to think about it bounced light: Light bounces around a lot, and colors from various parts of the scene should reflect in other areas of the scene depending on the lighting... and with an outfit as intensely bright as his, it would be reasonable to expect some of those primary colors to be bouncing around other parts of the scene... from really close-by things (like wouldn't the inside of his oots be picking up some of the blue from his stockings) to futher-away objects... the doorknob, the pants, the lunchbox, and even the floor might be getting some bounced clues and reds from his get-up.

Oh, and one other note about bounced light: Why is the shadow of the woman and her chair on the door a different color than the shadow of the chalkboard and doorknob tag?

I also agree with Ordibbles last 2 points, about Todays' chores and the line on the wall.

Anyhow, good luck with the finishes!

Good point Ordibble.

Oh oh. Yes, superhero’s thumb is obviously wrong, thanks for noticing.

About having a text on the blackboard that reads “Today’s Chores” instead of “Tomorrow’s Chores”. I prefer the recent one; reason being I want to give the viewer an idea that he accomplished the task for that day and Granny posted new set of chores for tomorrow which also justify why she is standing on a chair. In addition, I’m keeping away from a concept that gives the superhero an impression of being lazy for not complying things. Instead I want him to be a typical superhero that meet the terms of his intention to protect the world from furious villain yet has a soft heart and obedient to his folks.

Wall green line was now moved higher, there’s no visible line around the nose and mouth area.

Yes that’s a spit, meant to supplement the hero’s reaction.

Again, thank you very much for such honest and a very constructive opinion. This goes to Michael (Walrus) as well. Your comments on bounced lightings and shadow were also implemented.

Here’s the recent version.

Best wishes and good luck to both of you.

Hey, looking good. All your changes work well

I see what you mean about the sign - super is a good boy :) In this case, one other option you would have is to have it read "Today's Chores" but have ticks in all the boxes to show that he has done the chores and is now allowed to go out, provided he puts his pants on first - Granny could be on the chair because she has just ticked the boxes.

So please don't think I am desperate to have the sign changed or think that it is bad as it is. I really like your picture and thought that would just be another option you could consider.

All the best

Dave

hollietree I’m sorry for not replying to your request.

The way I created the hair is by using a PS solid preset brush; I deselect all brush tip shape and set my brush via Master Diameter to one pixel in size.

I populate the hair by painting one hair strand at a time, did a burn and dodge to enhance the look.

This process is bit cunning but rewarding.

Btw, here’s the mid way progress of Granny’s face.

Cheers.

Hey, Von, glad the suggestion was useful!
I like your reason for not changing the blackboard to "Today's Chores."
What a time-consuming way to do hair... but it looks fantastic, so I guess it doesn't matter in the end, the results are certainly good. (I also really like the shine and reflections on her glasses - wonderfully done!)

Concept: Capturing superhero’s sticky situation and presenting It in a humor way.

It’s been known that superheroes had a hard time meeting both ends of their lives; keeping their identity secret and dealing with their personal life as ordinary being at the same time pursuing their mission to keep the world safe.

Thus, will be my idea for my superhero’s adventure on such situation; this time in domestic circumstances.

Characters: Superhero and Grandma

Settings: Front door. Showing bit of receiving area.

Story: Superhero is about to leave the house to do his duty in saving the world. Grandma stands his way, disagreeing to Superhero leaving the house in underwear. Grandma presents a pair of pants.

Art Style: Cartoony but dense in details, should be true in achieving textures, lightings, clothing texture, reflection, refraction index on eyeglasses and specularity.

Shot:Quarter view

Composition: Rule of thirds
