View Full Version : Vehicles: Toy cars
shoey 03-20-2003, 09:21 PM Hey guys, had a bit of time off after finishing my kids animation, but back to work now.
This is for another project at uni. The brief was to model an existing toy and make it look old then design your own toy and make it look real (they are both based on matchbox cars).

I know the textures still need some work and i've still to finish the modelling on the new car.
Any suggestions on how to make them look more realistic:shrug:
Cheers:thumbsup:
[Edit:] Oh yeah, these are my first attempts at modelling some kind of car:)

Are you sure that the bus is cg an not a picture because it look photorealistic. Great work:thumbsup:

Really great stuff there. I love the fact that one is old and beat up and the other is brand new.
Only suggestions I can think of to make the new car look more realistic is to reduce the reflections on it a bit or maybe add a slight blur to them. For some reason, the reflection of the bus looks a little too crisp and clean. The grey parts also look a little out of place. I can't really tell what they're made of. The front bumper also seems like it's a tiny bit off in terms of the surface. (Almost as if it doesn't match the rest of the car, but maybe that's just from the lighting or the reflections)
Really awesome work.

EXCELLENT SMITHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am really impresseed with the old van, really captured the effect that it has been sitting around since grandpa was around. The new car like others have said is waaay too shiny. If my Hot wheels are right the tires aren't true black and the rims on the new car are for my liking too shiny. The van is good to go in my views. By chance can we get an idea of how high/low poly your models are and maybe a wireframe shot....PLEASE:applause:

Thanks alot for the replies guys:thumbsup: I'll make some of the changes you suggested later. I think i'm going to re-work the modelling on the front bumper. Those silver things are supposed to be the lights and grill (just silver paint). I went and bought a new car for reference and all the lights were just painted but i'll probs change them. The ref pic is HERE (http://www.cookercare.demon.co.uk/Art/ref.jpg)
Here are the requested wires:bounce:

Right then back to work on the new car. Cheers for all your comments guys, keep em comin:bounce:

the tiny truck is very cute :D and you've done a good texture job, really looks like an old toy.
But i don't like the more futurist car... It looks like a normal car resized to a little beatle. maybe you could try to adjust reflectivity on this one... don't know :/

Thanks for the reply nanabaky. I know what you mean about the newer car, the shader is a bit crappy. I'm messing around with the settings at the mo and i'll probs still change the geometry of it.
I'm testing out some compositing at the mo. Here's what i have so far. Let me know if you can see anything that i need ot change to help with the realism.
Cheers:thumbsup:

Shoey,
The New car still seems a bit too shinny. other than that looks great so far. Will be checking in later to see improvements....:applause:

On the compositing, the shadows on the real toys go to the left (the light is on the right), in the CG toys, the light appears to be from overhead.

Thanks guys, i'll take a look at those shadows.
Here are a few alterations of the car shader. Let me know if they are any good, my preference is 3 but still not keen on it compared to how the van looks.

Shoey,
The mixture of #3 and #4 would generate the best. Nice Work:applause:

The Bedford looks great..really nice job. Think the design of the new car lets it down slightly. :)
Hey both look great but that truck is top notch :)
for the new one my crits go towards the shadow being too much unlike the real ones (density, look and direction) and the dof : the carpet at car level is blurred and the car is sharp, kinda tingles my eye.
otherwise real nice work... keep it up

Thanks for your comments guys:thumbsup:
My mouse broke at the weekend so only a tiny update. Just had another play with the shader on the car. I'll change the shadows on the composites tomorrow so that they cast in the right direction. Is the shader on the car any better:shrug: I'm still not convinced

Right then. Sorted out the shadows on the composite. If anyone can see any problems with them let me know, they are easily changed now, after a bit off faffing. I still really don't like the new car texture any suggestions:shrug:
Here's where i'm up to now:bounce:
