Oh, such a nice invitation my friends! I am happy to have you already here. This time I trully have no idea where this thread will go and grow, so I might be pretty wild in the begining. Just few random images and scenes poping up in my mind already. Going to clear up my HDDs coz they are really messy after my school graduation project, lol! I think you need to check this, but I don't think it's possible to have the same project running in both illustration area and here. To bad I think, since I probably would like to make mine both animated and fullres still too. I may be wrong though so maybe some of the admins can clear it up.

@jporter313, @gpepper - thanx. Well I am in the process of finding the "language" of this show. The story will come l8r, but I have some plans based on music track pretty surreal and strange. So far, lot´s of style sketching on the way.
@Gunilla - thanx for being careful Gun. I found this: Individuals are allowed to enter in both Illustration and Animation categories. The main reason for allowing this is to permit a Matte Painting artist who does a lot of 3D work to submit their finished Matte Painting in the Illustration category and the 3D textured models in the Animation category. However Individuals are also allowed to make completely separate entries in both Illustration and Animation categories if they wish.
Anyway, my entries will have different composition and amount of postproduction, so I can call them separate. Just the WIP will somehow be the same. If you can find something to fight with this option, let me know to make it clear with moderators. Not that big deal I guess.

hey Gunnie, that´s great it helps you. But I still do have a lil mess here. So far I understand it this way:
Animation category - doesn´t really metter how huge is your project. The focus is on character animation.
Illustration category - old school category, where is no difference between 2D and 3D entry. All in one.
Open category - you have to make special WIPs to show the work to be focused on ( turntable, vfx breakdown, textures... ). And you have to attache those WIPs footages after your final animation footage is finished. So afterall, you will have one video containing character animation final movie + ie. turntable + textures...

To make it even more clear, this is what MarkSnoswell wrote:
You don’t have to do a 'making of' documentary to be eligible for the Open Categories -- but it is highly recommended. Conversely, if you are only interested in the Open Categories then your whole entry will be a silent 'making of' documentary style.
If you are planning to make a great character animation here is what I recommend:
1. Title sequence -- no longer then 10 sec.
2. Character animation - include music, dialogue, sound effects and anything else to make it as good as possible. -- 30 sec - 3 min in length ( I think he did a lil mistake here, and it suppose to be 30sec - 2 min in lenght for animation category )
4. "making of' sequence made up of as many 10-30 sec segments as you want to show off:
Modeling -- turntable, fly-arounds, close up. white shader with ambient occlusion.
Texturing -- turntable starting with checker UV mapping and texture build up to full texture and finish with texture under different lighting conditions.
Remember these are just my recommendations, not requirements. The reason for recommending you doing it this was is that you show off your finished work first -- in the best possible and most entertaining way. You need to be focusing on telling a really good story that people will be totally absorbed in. If you succeed in this then people will come away with the impression of "wow -- that was great" but they will not focus on any of the technical aspects like the modeling, texturing etc... if they do, that's bad. It means they lost interest in the story you were telling and started looking at the technical details instead.
Now -- once your show piece is out of the way and the credits have run you can put in you 'making of' sequences. If you do this well it will really impress people just how much work you did and how it added to the overall impact of the story without being obvious.
As a guide you should look at short films submitted to SIGGRAPH and other similar organizations -- see what people do to show of their work. Note how long animations are and what works. Note how modeling, lighting and effects shots are demonstrated in the effects and other categories. Many DVD's also have great making of material on them. Look at everything you can and really pay attention to what works and what doesn’t. Then try to copy the best and avoid the worst. Finally and most importantly -- look at your own work with fresh and critical eyes and be prepared to edit and change it to make it better.

@ claudiojordao - thanx. Well, gpepper was talking about my "journey begins" entry, which was pretty interesting and hot during the challenge, but it was not after it... For judges it even doesn´t get the challenge topic (as one of them said), lol. For me, better to stay closer to ground now :thumbsup: Don´t want to hit the ground from higher heights again, ha ha ha

Hey Juraj, great sketches man! I really like your style, and specially the way you use the colors. I agrre with Gunilla, a 2D animation like this would be awesome! Althoug I'm really curious to see this style transferred to 3D...

@ Gunilla - it is going to be mixture of 2d and 3d at the end anyway. But I will be more flexible with 3D characters I guess. I think even challenge team have some confusingness in the rulez, lol.

Okay. "The Block" concept is growing. Here is the list of characters. The story will be pretty simple - something around 1,5 minute of their "ordinary day time". 6 - 7 characters in simple animation and I have plans to finish it till the end of september so I will have time to move this idea for the illustration still entry. My personal fav is actually the one in post 7. Mainly becuase its so surreal and could lend itself to some awesome modeling.

@ ali-rahimi-shahmirzadi - thanx for feedback. Yeah, the "turtledile" or "turtlegator" is fancy one. So it probably will take a place in final animation and composition.
@ aurora - yes, the sureal one was nice "mind stretching" for the begining, but I can´t see very cheerful animation with such a thing so I decided to run with more "funky silly grounded idea of the block". It may look a bit mainstreamish but I have some kind of "think about it" composition in my mind so it may also have surreal impact to this show. I also decided to practise my character´s developing skills which actually will be better this way. But you are right, that surrealistic is atractive looking but a bit heavy weighted to me, compare to the header of this challenge. Cheers,

love that idea. one of the ideas with most potential in this challenge, in my opinion. and i am glad you are trying out a very stylised style for it. even though i think it might be a bit to brave to make so many characters in 3d for just one scene. but, it's called "challenge" for a reason.

Lol -i dont think i was very clear. I meant i had had a similar idea- although when i looked through the challenge i saw your fabulous idea - so decided instead on the idea im doing now -as i didnt want to do something too simliar to anyone elses. (Think im the only one with an anteater having tea so now i dont need to worry!) So basically in a round about way i was saying i liked your idea!
Anyway -im loving your designs and model! -As always your bringing a fabulously unique style into the mix!

@fellah - thanx for cheerin' me up! About the count of characters, they hopefuly will not sit on their asses just for this one. I also will make them all out of "universal mesh" I am working on right now. So after building and UVing I will just tweak, sculpt and paint over, all in very simple style (definitely not kind of mudbox high). Schedule - July = universal mesh and rig, August = characters and stages, September = animation, October = final touch ups + illustration/poster... No room for mistakes, lol :thumbsup:
@sel - yeah, I thought it has to be something you didn´t show us. Don´t need to be sorry, I am very light replyer this time too. So, I am happy that you cut your free time to type in here.

I love the character designs. Their partially disturbing but in a good way. The design is very original and I agree that you did a fantastic job transposing your sketch into 3D. Are these characters going to be rigged? I'm curious if the mouth being open is a neutral pose for the character?

Howdy folks! Here is finished clown´s apartment. It´s stright MR XSI render, so no postproduction yet. Room could be filled with a lot more objects to emphasize clown´s condition, but what I have now is IMHO enough to feel it. Hope you like it. I want to have all props and scenes finished till the end of this month, so I can focus on characters and final compositing in October. Sounds impossible, but what is important - I love this project! yo!

@ gpepper - I broke the light with stairs also for the goal of animation I am planing for this. It´s something to let you know where is my character going when off screen :thumbsup: Lighting is pretty out of reality but I do prefer kinda "theatrical stages" for this show.

Howdy folks! Here is my lil update. It´s apartment for Cook The Block character. Well, you might notice progressing is a bit slow around here. I thought this project is going to be heavy, finally I am sure it´s impossible to finish it the way my original idea was. I still want to make final submission for this challenge so here is what I want to do. I am leaving 3 characters ( fashion, glamour, turtledile ) for time after the challenge since I want to continue with "The Block" as my very personal project. I will be happy to submit final in 3D open category as lil flying camera sneakpeek. Also, I want to submit illustration showing a bit less than what I wanted but it could be fun as well. Okay, next week I am going to work on Body's appartment, so updating next weekend. Hope to finish it on time. Cheers,

howdy folks for once again.
Here I am with my model-render-animation entry called "The Block". As a description of this project I am going to retype what I wrote for illustration entry. So, idea behind is kind of simple. Generally, my goal was to capture strange behavior you may find allaround in real life. The style of my scene is not stright realistic what is just natural for me. I am using a mixture of realistic elements with caricature to catch the mood of parody (comedy) instead. It wants to be funny and entertaining but as few people already said, there is a bit of sedness in it as well. It is just "so close" to everyday reality.
I started this project as animation short wannabe. Block of apartments full of residents with strange behaving on their daily routine poped up as nice base for more than one short. Well, its also pretty huge project so I finished just this promo part of it. Characters are developed as human caricatures all besed on one universal mesh for man and one for woman. Everything modeled in XSI 5.11 Foundation, UV mapped and textured in BodyPaint R3. Rigged back in XSI , all rendered with MentalRay and finally some postproduction in AfterEffects 6.5 Standard.

I finally can say I am done with this challenge. Did my maximum to let you folks see a bit of my "world". Now I just hope that all of you who supported me during this show are happy with my final submissions and hopefuly few new get some interest in this too. melkao, you can download the FLV file from challenge player. There is download link under the control panel but you have to wait till whole animation upload on the screen from server. Glad you like it. I wish I had time to animate more than camera, lol :deal:

Thats a great end result :) The camera work is very nice, a very surreal feel. Like a Matrix snap of the world ;) Congrats and good luck

It's really impressive! I dunno how things are goin' in other countries, but the mood of a block is pretty similar here at Hungary. I really liked it! One of our greatest humorist started his carreer with a stand up comedy about a block's life. Your work should be a great illustration :). Am a bit sad, I missed the animation, but finally it's already freakin awesome Juraj! Maybe am sensitive with these kind of socio-doku-grotesk funs, but this one really grabbed my sight. @ Tremoside - I believe it has a lot of to do with past of our region too, he he. Yeah, I know character animation is a must for even think about votes from judges but I just wanted to submit something in order to present this concept deeper way. Thanks for nice comment. cya!

Hilarious idea. A great way of showing how strange everything is! :)
Your characters are great, I especially like the scientist and the clown. Something incredible about the expresion on that clowns face!
