Hi bro' :)
So good to see you in, good luck!
06-25-2007, 08:23 PM
I was genuinely hoping you'd enter here Oweron, I look forward to some more true innovation here:love:
06-25-2007, 08:31 PM
Juraj ! Cool to see you there ! I hope this challenge will let you express in your art !
06-25-2007, 08:37 PM
Oh, such a nice invitation my friends! I am happy to have you already here. This time I trully have no idea where this thread will go and grow, so I might be pretty wild in the begining. Just few random images and scenes poping up in my mind already. Going to clear up my HDDs coz they are really messy after my school graduation project, lol! Have a nice time around and good luck to you all
06-26-2007, 10:10 PM
so good to see that you are in this one too :bounce:
06-26-2007, 11:42 PM
something stretchy for the begining sketchy.
06-27-2007, 12:19 AM
Hey Oweron, really cool initial image, any idea for a story or concept behind it? my interest has been piqued.
06-27-2007, 07:17 AM
The sketch is really cool ! I love the style !
Can you explain us ?
06-27-2007, 08:23 AM
Love the sketch - makes me curious :)
I think you need to check this, but I don't think it's possible to have the same project running in both illustration area and here. To bad I think, since I probably would like to make mine both animated and fullres still too. I may be wrong though so maybe some of the admins can clear it up.
06-27-2007, 10:51 AM
hiya oweron ! nice colors there and good luck mate :)!
06-27-2007, 12:16 PM
Definitely sparked my curiosity already mate... Very interesting
06-27-2007, 01:12 PM
@makaron - hello miss GP! Nice to see you around as well...
@jporter313, @gpepper - thanx. Well I am in the process of finding the "language" of this show. The story will come l8r, but I have some plans based on music track pretty surreal and strange. So far, lot´s of style sketching on the way.
@Gunilla - thanx for being careful Gun. I found this: Individuals are allowed to enter in both Illustration and Animation categories. The main reason for allowing this is to permit a Matte Painting artist who does a lot of 3D work to submit their finished Matte Painting in the Illustration category and the 3D textured models in the Animation category. However Individuals are also allowed to make completely separate entries in both Illustration and Animation categories if they wish.
Anyway, my entries will have different composition and amount of postproduction, so I can call them separate. Just the WIP will somehow be the same. If you can find something to fight with this option, let me know to make it clear with moderators. Not that big deal I guess.
@ihamid - hiya my friend! Just some mind stretching, lol.
@DaddyMack - yo! Will try to keep you in that mood bro!
06-27-2007, 01:26 PM
That's some awesome weirdness. :) I'm curious to see how it will look like once animated.
06-27-2007, 03:26 PM
Another mind stretching. This time more grounded.
06-27-2007, 03:26 PM

That is just great! I hadn't seen that part - it will solve my concearns as well. Thanks for digging it up
06-27-2007, 04:48 PM
hey Gunnie, that´s great it helps you. But I still do have a lil mess here. So far I understand it this way:
Animation category - doesn´t really metter how huge is your project. The focus is on character animation.
Illustration category - old school category, where is no difference between 2D and 3D entry. All in one.
Open category - you have to make special WIPs to show the work to be focused on ( turntable, vfx breakdown, textures... ). And you have to attache those WIPs footages after your final animation footage is finished. So afterall, you will have one video containing character animation final movie + ie. turntable + textures...
06-28-2007, 08:48 AM
To make it even more clear, this is what MarkSnoswell wrote:
You don’t have to do a 'making of' documentary to be eligible for the Open Categories -- but it is highly recommended. Conversely, if you are only interested in the Open Categories then your whole entry will be a silent 'making of' documentary style.
If you are planning to make a great character animation here is what I recommend:
1. Title sequence -- no longer then 10 sec.
2. Character animation - include music, dialogue, sound effects and anything else to make it as good as possible. -- 30 sec - 3 min in length ( I think he did a lil mistake here, and it suppose to be 30sec - 2 min in lenght for animation category )
4. "making of' sequence made up of as many 10-30 sec segments as you want to show off:
Modeling -- turntable, fly-arounds, close up. white shader with ambient occlusion.
Texturing -- turntable starting with checker UV mapping and texture build up to full texture and finish with texture under different lighting conditions.
Remember these are just my recommendations, not requirements. The reason for recommending you doing it this was is that you show off your finished work first -- in the best possible and most entertaining way. You need to be focusing on telling a really good story that people will be totally absorbed in. If you succeed in this then people will come away with the impression of "wow -- that was great" but they will not focus on any of the technical aspects like the modeling, texturing etc... if they do, that's bad. It means they lost interest in the story you were telling and started looking at the technical details instead.
Now -- once your show piece is out of the way and the credits have run you can put in you 'making of' sequences. If you do this well it will really impress people just how much work you did and how it added to the overall impact of the story without being obvious.
As a guide you should look at short films submitted to SIGGRAPH and other similar organizations -- see what people do to show of their work. Note how long animations are and what works. Note how modeling, lighting and effects shots are demonstrated in the effects and other categories. Many DVD's also have great making of material on them. Look at everything you can and really pay attention to what works and what doesn’t. Then try to copy the best and avoid the worst. Finally and most importantly -- look at your own work with fresh and critical eyes and be prepared to edit and change it to make it better.

Had a lil time of sketching again. Playing and tweaking around "the house" idea.
07-01-2007, 12:52 PM
07-01-2007, 01:14 PM
Yeah, your sketches are cool and stylised ! I can remember the style of your entry in "journey begins".
Sure you have the talent of a great artist !
Keep going !
07-01-2007, 03:06 PM
So far it looks like I will need to animate/pose more than one character. Therefore I decided to find the way of universal character. Here are first sketches of him/her :) Tadaaaaa...
07-01-2007, 08:27 PM
Hi Oweron, your sketches are great.
For now, your entry is one of the most interesting!
07-01-2007, 08:43 PM
concepts looking real good... i love ur style... the lst characters r really nice... keep goin and keep showing us those nice drawings....
07-02-2007, 09:35 AM
@ alvin-cgi, gpepper - thanx for nice words. Not so sure about weight of different style in those challenges, but it is just natural to try to be original.
@ claudiojordao - thanx. Well, gpepper was talking about my "journey begins" entry, which was pretty interesting and hot during the challenge, but it was not after it... For judges it even doesn´t get the challenge topic (as one of them said), lol. For me, better to stay closer to ground now  Don´t want to hit the ground from higher heights again, ha ha ha
@ overcontrast - thank you as well. However, I need to start some true 3D work here in order to catch the tempo of this show. Keep watching.
07-02-2007, 12:27 PM
I love your drawing style for this! How about making the animation in 2d? That could be pretty cool I think.
About the categorys and what's expected of us - I find it a bit confusing too. Maybe it will all be revealed in the end :D
07-02-2007, 03:58 PM
I am very enjoy looking at your characters, and your sketch.
07-03-2007, 05:25 PM
Under the block there is a canalization. Under the block there is an unwanted product.
07-03-2007, 05:36 PM
Hey Juraj, great sketches man! I really like your style, and specially the way you use the colors. I agrre with Gunilla, a 2D animation like this would be awesome! Althoug I'm really curious to see this style transferred to 3D...
Anyway, keep it up, we want more! :scream:
07-04-2007, 07:27 AM
@ Gunilla - it is going to be mixture of 2d and 3d at the end anyway. But I will be more flexible with 3D characters I guess. I think even challenge team have some confusingness in the rulez, lol.
@ tnads - cool! thanx!
@ Anubis3D - Yeah, maybe to transfer it right with the mood will be my goal for this challenge. Still brainstorming a lot in my mind about whole show... keep watching, thanx
07-04-2007, 01:32 PM
Hi Oweron! Great to see you here! I love your idea! (-infact i had a kind of similar idea with perhaps a touch more of an S&M overtone to it! -lol -looks like i wont be doing it now!) Loving your sketches -cant wait to see how you go -and looking forward to learning even more from you this time around! Good luck!
07-04-2007, 08:50 PM
Nice to see you around again. I am not sure if I can see connections between our threads. Can you be more specific why you want to rethink your concept? Feel free to ask as much as you want, that´s the other ( and better ) part of this challenge - to learn  Good luck!
07-05-2007, 12:45 AM
Okay. "The Block" concept is growing. Here is the list of characters. The story will be pretty simple - something around 1,5 minute of their "ordinary day time". 6 - 7 characters in simple animation and I have plans to finish it till the end of september so I will have time to move this idea for the illustration still entry. Hope you like this idea. Comments are more than welcome. Cheers,
07-05-2007, 09:45 PM
Interesting sketches. I like that alligator turtle consept alot.
07-05-2007, 11:16 PM
My personal fav is actually the one in post 7. Mainly becuase its so surreal and could lend itself to some awesome modeling.
Great sketchs I love them all.
07-06-2007, 09:38 AM
@ ali-rahimi-shahmirzadi - thanx for feedback. Yeah, the "turtledile" or "turtlegator" is fancy one. So it probably will take a place in final animation and composition.
@ aurora - yes, the sureal one was nice "mind stretching" for the begining, but I can´t see very cheerful animation with such a thing so I decided to run with more "funky silly grounded idea of the block". It may look a bit mainstreamish but I have some kind of "think about it" composition in my mind so it may also have surreal impact to this show. I also decided to practise my character´s developing skills which actually will be better this way. But you are right, that surrealistic is atractive looking but a bit heavy weighted to me, compare to the header of this challenge. Cheers,
07-07-2007, 12:59 AM
call it blue print, lol
07-10-2007, 12:32 AM
howdy folks! I fired up my first polygons today. Head is here. Well, still wip but I think I will be able to move those characters into the third dimension.
07-11-2007, 09:43 AM
love that idea. one of the ideas with most potential in this challenge, in my opinion. and i am glad you are trying out a very stylised style for it. even though i think it might be a bit to brave to make so many characters in 3d for just one scene. but, it's called "challenge" for a reason.
07-11-2007, 04:25 PM
Sorry i havent got back for ages- work and such!
Lol -i dont think i was very clear. I meant i had had a similar idea- although when i looked through the challenge i saw your fabulous idea - so decided instead on the idea im doing now -as i didnt want to do something too simliar to anyone elses. (Think im the only one with an anteater having tea so now i dont need to worry!) So basically in a round about way i was saying i liked your idea!
Anyway -im loving your designs and model! -As always your bringing a fabulously unique style into the mix!
07-12-2007, 10:48 AM
@fellah - thanx for cheerin' me up! About the count of characters, they hopefuly will not sit on their asses just for this one. I also will make them all out of "universal mesh" I am working on right now. So after building and UVing I will just tweak, sculpt and paint over, all in very simple style (definitely not kind of mudbox high). Schedule - July = universal mesh and rig, August = characters and stages, September = animation, October = final touch ups + illustration/poster... No room for mistakes, lol
@sel - yeah, I thought it has to be something you didn´t show us. Don´t need to be sorry, I am very light replyer this time too. So, I am happy that you cut your free time to type in here.
07-12-2007, 01:31 PM
Great start on the modeling Oweron, i wondered how your wonderful sketches would equate to 3d. Wonderful.
07-13-2007, 01:32 AM
Final male body wannabe. Just need to tweak a bit with fresh eyes and make the female out of it, than UVs... Comments and Crits are welcome as usual. Thanx
07-15-2007, 06:57 PM
hope you like ´em
07-15-2007, 07:08 PM
here is lil overpaint to see how the characterisation will go.
07-16-2007, 06:43 AM
I just love your pair of characters! Really nice stylized, and follows the feel of your sketches real well. Well done
07-16-2007, 08:06 PM
Curious to see what the emotions of the faces will do in animation.
07-16-2007, 09:39 PM
I love the character designs. Their partially disturbing but in a good way. The design is very original and I agree that you did a fantastic job transposing your sketch into 3D. Are these characters going to be rigged? I'm curious if the mouth being open is a neutral pose for the character?
07-17-2007, 06:26 PM
@handlebar - steve, great to know you like 3d look of it. It is actually crucial to me, to get the right mix of ingredients here. Bit of 2d and bit of 3d. All in good balance.
@Gunilla - sweet! Keep cheerin' me up sis.
@Nothingness - Thanx. They will change a lot in the final piece.
@JCahoon - seeing you are skilled animator, thanx for your feedback. Yes, they are going to be rigged. Full body rig with some facial controls. And second yes, the mouth suppose to be neutral pose, feel free to comment if you see smthing wrong for that task. Cheers,
07-17-2007, 07:22 PM
stylee man !
07-18-2007, 10:54 PM
BodyPaint UV edit. Next step is rigging and weighting setup.
07-19-2007, 03:14 AM
07-19-2007, 03:35 PM
@ gpepper - YO!
@ melkao - hey buddy, great to see you around. So you can see "strangeness" here, now I just need to add some kind of "behavior" and I am good to go :deal: hah
07-19-2007, 03:59 PM
Nice character design, Like your Sketches too
07-19-2007, 04:51 PM
you are right...here are a lot of strange things...just wait for mine...
07-19-2007, 11:48 PM
howdy folks! I decided to skip rigging setup and I am going to progress "the block" characters. Here's the first one sketchy. Comments are welcome. Enjoy.
07-20-2007, 10:45 PM
well, fashion designer.
07-21-2007, 09:09 PM
how strange is that?
07-22-2007, 10:06 PM
another "the block" inhabitant :o)
07-23-2007, 05:58 PM
Strange and very cool stuff, cant wait to see these characters in 3D.
07-23-2007, 06:38 PM
jajajaja...what a crazy thing...you are so mad...you must live in a madhouse!
very nice progress....keep going!:scream:
07-23-2007, 10:07 PM
cook and a plaster.
07-24-2007, 09:36 PM
@ diosalex - thanx! It is great to see audience is growing.
@ jasondesigns - yeah, 3D is going to be real challenge, but I want to keep it in very sketchy form so the story will be stright, hopefuly. Thank you.
@ melkao - ha ha, lol, not that mad. But I surely took some inspirations from the real world around me. Keep watching
07-27-2007, 10:52 PM
hello folks! Me, back on the track :) Here is the last one of "the block" inhabitants. Enjoy

08-04-2007, 11:47 PM
The wierdness in here just keeps growing and mutating... Love the directions you're taking this Juraj.:applause:
08-05-2007, 12:18 AM
@ thedoc - ha ha, and you don´t know I am going to pick all of them! Thank you.
@ melkao - thanx buddy, will try to keep the tempo.
@ DaddyMack - there´s naked man dancing at the square in the TV show right now... man, that is weird, ha ha ha. Thanx for cheering me up. BTW - hopefuly my "cook" doesn´t disturbing hot chicks from your entry.

08-06-2007, 06:20 AM
Oh yes - it seems you handle the move of the style into 3d very well. The cook is so funny!
Love the way you present your updates too - real cool :)
08-06-2007, 07:49 AM
They are just all excellent !
08-06-2007, 09:29 PM
ehm ehm... glamourous... ehm ehm... girl :D
08-06-2007, 11:15 PM
She's beautiful mate:love: I think the muscle character shouls\d have a slimmer waist tho to accentuate the torso... Loving this:D
08-06-2007, 11:35 PM

08-07-2007, 10:33 PM
ahahaha wow! I love the character designs, very unique!
I think the face and body style are great! My favorite is the very large cook woman.
Can't wait to see more!
08-08-2007, 09:50 PM
Work on textures and shaders for whole bunch of "the block" characters is going to be my next step. Still long way to rig them and prepare the props, uff uff
08-08-2007, 10:25 PM
howdy hey howdy how!
@ Gunilla - simply *cool bananas*
@ gpepper - Look who´s back! Thanx. How was your holiday?
@ DaddyMack - Thanks for the suggestion. I did a modification to that part, it is just a lil one but noticable. Good point.

08-10-2007, 06:22 PM
Male characters side by side. I may add few bodystyling differences to them depends on how their personalities will pop up once textured.
08-10-2007, 06:23 PM
Male characters side by side. I may add few bodystyling differences to them depends on how their personalities will pop up once textured.
08-10-2007, 06:36 PM
Female characters side by side. I have texturing in my schedule as next wip but for now : IT´S HOLIDAY TIME :) Cya folks in around two weeks!
08-12-2007, 09:11 PM
They look great mate... enjoy your break we'll all be here when you return:wavey:
08-13-2007, 05:18 AM

08-25-2007, 04:35 PM
Great style!! Congratulations!
08-26-2007, 09:10 PM
Here's textured "cook". Few parts could be touched up, but not now coz I am pretty out of my schedule already. Hope you like it anyway :)
08-26-2007, 09:22 PM
@ DaddyMack - yeah, lot´s of great updates allaround. Break was pretty good
@ melkao - they´re all polygonal modeled with subdivision to smooth them (this time, he he). I am not really big fan of sculpting tools but it looks like I am going to dive into it soon.
@ lotaH - Thanx and good luck to you too!
08-30-2007, 09:12 AM
OMG! Muscles Muscles Muscles!
08-30-2007, 09:30 AM
They are all excellent, Specially the bodybuilder !
08-30-2007, 09:33 PM
Hah! they're great J! especially the clown... this is shaping up again:thumbsup:
08-31-2007, 06:58 AM
Yep, looking good here - especially the clown. The bodybuilder looks a bit to detailed to go with your chosen style but that could be just me... glad to see you keep on rollin with this:thumbsup:
08-31-2007, 09:18 PM
I was playing with sickshader for mad scientist. Still wip though.

09-03-2007, 12:15 PM
finally have some time to reply :)
@ gpepper - Cool you like them. I was missing your fedback in here
@ DaddyMack - More fun to come!
@ Gunilla - yeee, gunie with a lil crit! Well, imho, from one point of view bodybuilder has the same level of details as so far characters. From other point of view, we see them exactly the same way in our real life as you just said - "they are "a bit too detailed" :)
09-03-2007, 03:26 PM
that's so strange!...you need medicine!
09-03-2007, 07:11 PM
Very original concept... i like the weird character design and the interesting story
keep the great style coming!!
09-04-2007, 06:50 PM
Professor The Block. Well, not every experiment is successful...
09-05-2007, 10:35 AM
Hey bro, nice character and sketch. love it.
09-06-2007, 11:26 AM
@ melkao - not me but Professor... errr, he´s going to mix one for sure.
@ Maxter - Thanx. Hope you'll like it once finished.
@ tinysabya - Hey bro, great to read that! Thanx.
09-06-2007, 04:00 PM
haha doc's looking sick giv him a shot.. lol... very nice design and style... keep up the good works man... wanna c some motion!
09-07-2007, 02:01 PM
I am egarly waiting to c some more ammazing stuff commingup,
keep going ..
09-08-2007, 12:32 PM
I realy like the prof, fantastic.
09-10-2007, 03:19 PM
@ overcontrast - thanx! well, motion... not easy coz I want to have all visual job done as first. So I will be able to finish this as an illustration at least. I say, last month of the challenge I will play with rigs and animation...
@ pixelpiyan - Thank you. I am slow in progress right now, but end of this week sounds good for some progress around.
@ handlebar - yo! Keep cheering me up mate
09-11-2007, 09:22 PM
I am having lil break from characters developing. I decided to start working on enviroments so I will have more time to plan final look of this show. Basicaly, its going to be rough mixture of reality and caricature. Here is lil sneakpeek how´s my progress so far.
09-11-2007, 09:44 PM
this is going to be good !
Can't wait to see it lit and rendered
09-17-2007, 09:59 AM
Howdy folks! Here is finished clown´s apartment. It´s stright MR XSI render, so no postproduction yet. Room could be filled with a lot more objects to emphasize clown´s condition, but what I have now is IMHO enough to feel it. Hope you like it. I want to have all props and scenes finished till the end of this month, so I can focus on characters and final compositing in October. Sounds impossible, but what is important - I love this project! yo!
09-17-2007, 10:50 AM
That's what I was waiting for and it is really good !
You broke the lighting with the stairs' shadow, cool, it gives a richer atmosphere.
09-18-2007, 08:23 AM
@ gpepper - I broke the light with stairs also for the goal of animation I am planing for this. It´s something to let you know where is my character going when off screen  Lighting is pretty out of reality but I do prefer kinda "theatrical stages" for this show.
09-18-2007, 06:06 PM
That looks relly nice...the volume light in the window is just amazing!
09-29-2007, 10:22 PM
Howdy folks! Here is my lil update. It´s apartment for Cook The Block character. Well, you might notice progressing is a bit slow around here. I thought this project is going to be heavy, finally I am sure it´s impossible to finish it the way my original idea was. I still want to make final submission for this challenge so here is what I want to do. I am leaving 3 characters ( fashion, glamour, turtledile ) for time after the challenge since I want to continue with "The Block" as my very personal project. I will be happy to submit final in 3D open category as lil flying camera sneakpeek. Also, I want to submit illustration showing a bit less than what I wanted but it could be fun as well. Okay, next week I am going to work on Body's appartment, so updating next weekend. Hope to finish it on time. Cheers,

howdy folks for once again.
Here I am with my model-render-animation entry called "The Block". As a description of this project I am going to retype what I wrote for illustration entry. So, idea behind is kind of simple. Generally, my goal was to capture strange behavior you may find allaround in real life. The style of my scene is not stright realistic what is just natural for me. I am using a mixture of realistic elements with caricature to catch the mood of parody (comedy) instead. It wants to be funny and entertaining but as few people already said, there is a bit of sedness in it as well. It is just "so close" to everyday reality.
I started this project as animation short wannabe. Block of apartments full of residents with strange behaving on their daily routine poped up as nice base for more than one short. Well, its also pretty huge project so I finished just this promo part of it. Characters are developed as human caricatures all besed on one universal mesh for man and one for woman. Everything modeled in XSI 5.11 Foundation, UV mapped and textured in BodyPaint R3. Rigged back in XSI , all rendered with MentalRay and finally some postproduction in AfterEffects 6.5 Standard.
Feel free to check out illustration entry from "The Block world" with few extra elements in my challenge thread at http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=225&t=510940&page=1&pp=15 or download 1/2 full render from http://www.dvadetride.sk/download/theblock_half.jpg. Hope you will like it. Thanks.

melkao, you can download the FLV file from challenge player. There is download link under the control panel but you have to wait till whole animation upload on the screen from server. Glad you like it. I wish I had time to animate more than camera, lol :deal:

It's really impressive! I dunno how things are goin' in other countries, but the mood of a block is pretty similar here at Hungary. I really liked it! One of our greatest humorist started his carreer with a stand up comedy about a block's life. Your work should be a great illustration :). Am a bit sad, I missed the animation, but finally it's already freakin awesome Juraj! Maybe am sensitive with these kind of socio-doku-grotesk funs, but this one really grabbed my sight. Thank you and hope we'll meet here next time too. Best luck!

That was mental mate! I loved all of the colour and motion you injected, it gave this piece a real sense of fun:D Congratulations Juraj on another fine challenge entry:applause::applause::applause:

@ DaddyMack - Glad you like it. Its always good feeling to read positive feedback from talented and skilled artists. You already know I have much respect for your work. Thanx!
@ coolkonrad - hmmm. "strange block"... hmmm, so it sounds like I did it close to challenge topic, ha ha. Thank you Peter!

Good luck to you too!
