i just thought of an old idea i once had and i'll use it cause it is perfect for this challenge.
a simple titel : AMISH GANGSTERS !!!
the still will be a group of amish gangsters posing before their tuned ride (not sure about the translation, but it's that thing that is being pulled by horses ).
The Amish gansters will be inspired by some notourious rappers like BIG, tupac, public enemy and many more. I'll do some research soon.
I'm not sure if i am gonna put a lot of time in animation, but it could be i'll spend a lot of time in that area. Combined with some graphics it could get pretty funcky.
Tomorrow i'll start some previz and designing the characters.

gpepper, i'll have a look at the rules, but i think it shouldn't be a problem since i don't really make fun with their religion. Their believes are a little the reason why their behavior is out of the normal.

Don't know why i started the some shoes, but i just felt like it. Based on some DC sneakers i wear.
These DC's of mine are way cooler, but i wonder if this is a copyright problem if i use them digitally?
anyway. Soon some more sketches for the characters.

The shoes are wonderfully modeled and textures, I don’t think there is anything wrong with using the likeness of the shoes, as long as it doesn’t have there logo or trademarked design features on them. But here is a wonderful little Disney copyright montage that should hopefully explain about copyrighted material:

thanks james for the link. It was helpfull in a way. Now i just think in a sence like: when you make a video clip and where these shoes, there is no copyright violation. I think you can't use a logo on a real product, but in 3d i think it's a different story.
i'll see what happens.

Nice concept and even nicer shoe modeling. You also don't seem to waist any time.
I don't think you have to worry about the copyright if you don't use the logo.

Andrei: thanks a lot! I try to do everything right from the start this time. Only problem is that i would like to make a big render, and then you need a lot of detail. But if i do animation it would be an overkill to have too much detail. oh, the dilemma !!

Dries: Thanks, i posted the shoes under modeling, while i think it is more shading and texturing that makes it the way it looks now. Maybe i'll put a little more time in it if the time is available.
ps. what region of belgium are you from? Not much belgian participants here. way too small country.

Seriously though... some of the amish from arian heritage have real heavy set bone structures like a swedish masseur... it may be cool to include 1 big badass, maybe like a young recruit or something

Same situation over here ... but that's probably a good thing for me to get into animation and rigging a little bit further than classic illsutrations I made so far. Should be really fun , and I'm sure you're gonna do a really great job at it.

Hey DaddyMack, thanks. I was planning on making a big bad-ass too but the sketches weren't good enough yet. I was planning on ginving him little dreads and putting a "koekoeksklok" around his neck. (didn't find a translation, but it's the klok with the bird inside) as a hilarious link to that guy from public enemy that wears a big watch around his neck.
Stéphane, sweet, i hope i can get an even better look for the 3d models. At the moment i'm modeling the zeropac character. I might even call him 11fingaz.
And rigging i've just did for posing characters. But when it comes to animation it will be hell.
Dries, great you like the first character. I'll basically base them on icons but it's not always easy. For the hair i'm not sure. I used maya's hair once and it sucks in 2 ways. One is it is hard to use in animation (mostly for a female character with longer hair) so it shouldn't be a problem here. And second and the worst of 'm all, it's a b**** to render that stuff. Anti-aliasing is awfull and render times are huge. Maybe if it's a problem i'll use paint-effects, convert it to polys and rig it a litte so it's easy to animate it cartoonishly. It might be a lot's of polys, but it'll render faster then maya's hair.
And with poly's and textures i'm not really experienced in. It'll fail no doubt. Also does the hairs need to be a little curly. So that will be hard.

Please note, this is the basic shape !! I'll have a look into detailing and styling it with zbrush. But before i do that i need to have the body and make sure the neck is finished.
Also will i be doing a test first with displacement cause sometimes that can be a hell in maya. If it doesn't work or takes too long, i'll try something else. For animation it is rather essential we can render fast enough.
I hope i can change this face and it's topology to model the base for some other characters. Would save a lot of time.
crits on te topology are most welkome.

now busy on the body. Still have to work this night but in the next 2 days i should get a nice update on the first character.

yeah, so am i :twisted:
the plan is just to make a standard good body with correct topology and shape. (for the animation part) and then adjust the shape to have an appropriate comic style for the character. I don't think i'm gonna zbrush for the body. It's only on character that has a naked torso.
but i only fear the set-up part. If all should go well up to the animation, i should do the clothes fully simulated. That will be fun. I'll buy a lot of booz and asperines for those times.
yeah man u better be ready hehe :) this gonna be kewl i can wait to see this finished , i will keep a close eye on this one :)

i'm back for only a little time.
Spend a lot of freaking out on this model. I hope i don't have much problems texturing and uv-aditing this.
Next thing is finishing the body of the first Character.

Little explenation on the tricycle: i have to model a carriage that will be pimped, and i wasn't in the mood to model an animal since i'm not in the mood to spend too much time on it.
So, i modeled this tricycle that is way too absurd to even be able to ride, and should pull the carriage.
The wheels are actually wooden rims, had disc-brakes. Also the shork-absorbers on the front wheel only absorb shocks when hitting a wall.
Front part is too long so turning is way too hard and the steer is huge.
The sphere you see will become a disco ball.

I might still change some things when i can take a little distance from the modeling. The design could have been better, but i spend way too much time on designing it cause i couldn't find anything that looked like this.
It's all one big pile of "merde" :twisted:
I'll propably change the the back plate with the disco sphere. Don't really like it.

While cleaning up the TriCycle, i thought i start a little to experiment with shading and lighting.

infoarq: thanks. I don't intent to post a lot of tests, but i wasn't really happy with the detail you could see with the ambiant occlusion renders. Soon i'll post the render with all the chrome.
demitsuri: yeah, i want to continue the character asap. I think i'll try and finish up the tricycle and then finish the first character. The tricycle is still getting a little detail and i'm fixing the shading. Will only have little textures to do.

And here is the rest.
- the lower part will be hidden for all characters behind the simulated clothes.
- The feet will propably disapear and replaced directly with the shoes.
- This is also a mere base mesh that will be shaped when the head is added and to fit the characteristics of the character.

Now these are kind of 3 base characters for the animation. Still don't look like i want them to be but then again, they still don't have textures nor hair nor clothes.
Now i can think about the typical other characters.
The shorty: the little fat guy with the klock around the neck.
The middle: the goody zeropac with the braid in the beard.
The long: the old PIMP with the long white beard and possible the scratching DJ. (should be fun if it works out)

Looks awesome so far. You're really moving at a good pace. My once crit would be to try and give those 3 body types a little more variation. Perhaps the short guy should be even shorter and a bit more chubby and the tall skinny guy more lanky and bony. Of course, you may already have an idea in your head where you are going with this and could not even need that much variation. Just an idea. ;)

I'm also doing other characters and it's not always easy to do that much variation.
On the other hand, the old guy will have more variation with his bend pose that i can only do when it's rigged. And with the clothes you won't see too much of aal that shape. Only one has a naked torso. Much differnce will be in the hair and hair-style.
Plus i was hoping to be able to take the faces into zbrush for some detailing. Cause right now you can't really see the long one is old.
i hope this is clear enough i kind of know where this is going :twisted:
anyway, i think i'll need my time for the more intensive parts of the challenge.

Great job on those early shoe models, clean modeling and the textures are great. The overal gangsta amish is a neat concept, it kind of winds up an open playground for you too spin a lot of jokes off. Nice shader on the tric, love the overall design.
The base mesh on the characters seems good. It'll be nice to see it when you start doing the broad variations on the head, but I can understand why you're leaving that till you get them through ZB.
Great stuff so far, you're moving along at good speed :)

I'm glad to hear that you're going to go the route of using simulated clothing as I hope to do the same. Maybe we can share what we learn from the experience and help each other out. I'm sure it will be cool yet frustrating at times to get the clothes to behave correctly.
As for you concept and modeling, everything looks good so far. I do have an idea that you can use if you do decide to go the animation route. Perhaps you can have a non-Amish newspaper reporter/photographer from a nearby town getting ready to snap a picture of the Amish gangstas as they pose with their tricycle. Just a thought. :)

Thanks Kary, i'll try to implement a lot of funny stuff in the animation if i cet it right.
Uf i can just get a good and stable character set-up, then i can go back to the models and make them much better. By this time i think they suck and will do the details before going up to the rigging and skinning.

At the moment i'm not concerned with the storyboard since i don't know how far i'll get. But i have some seperate idea's to use to make it hilarious. I was already planning on doing a posing, but it's more like in a show-off of the gang :twisted:
Some ideas are: the 12fingered gansta showing off the mods on his cariage and playing with the air shocks. But at a point the cariage will flip over and fall on it's side.
Another one is the old long grandpa Amisch PIMP putting up a record ( LP ) and accedently starts scratching cause he has a huge shake in his muscles. Call it parkinson if you must :buttrock:
About the simulation of cloth: i'm gonna use Syflex since it works way much better than maya's nCloth, is simpler and faster. Eaven gets better results. I already used it to shape clothes for a personal project i was doing, and i'm getting the hang of the workflow. It will only have a few possible problems when doing longer animation.
But i sure wouldn't mind giving tips and hints when you get into trouble with is.

okay, just to show you guys i'm alive, here a first texturing screenshot. It's the first time i did it this way so i still need to tweek in photoshop.
The last week i've been busy with building a setup and a script to automate the controls so i don't need to do this with every character. I hope i don't get into many trouble skinning them.

Great updates. Like the modeling on the hands and the skinny body.
Since alot of details are going to be hidden by the clothes i think it's a good idea
to focus on the visible parts. Unless you want to show the hidden parts in a turntable to
show your modelling skills.
By the way: the bike looks great. Curious about the textures.

this character is the only one with a naked torso, otherwise i wouldn't have spend time on the detail and textures. But it still need a lot of work.
At the moment i'm doing all kind of morphs for the face. I already have a huge amount, but i still haven't started the ones for the speetch.
But it is going faster than expected so no probs there.

Ania, thnx, i know it's way too rough. A lot of it should go away when the SSS kicks in, but it still needs to good before i go there.

still one night to work and then i'll be free for 7 days to work on the challenge. I'll finish the setup and do some animation tests. Then move on to finishing the other characters and then start on the real animation. Then i can do the shaders and lighting and all of that. I hope i can finish this one. I lost a lot of time.
