What place would be more appropriate than a mental hospital.
I Want to create a surreal scene, with some caracters in strange behaviors and activities.
For this one, i'll try to obtain a cartoon stylish image.
i Hope to.
This is the first rough of a cycle for the first caracter.

hey cyril,

it's not easy to find an idea huh! I still am in search.

but just a little comment: i'm not sure if the idea is will be just right. I think you have an idea and it is more like a cartoonisch representation of a group of people who have strange ways in real life. I think it should be more like some situation of somebody that you wouldn't expect. From mental patients you would expect they have a strange behaviour.
It should be more like: for example: superman crying cause he got a splinter in his finger.

the mental institution is a great idea, but just look out for the details and interpretation.

cheers mate

Santo, thanks, not time for material then, but soon.

Hey Monsit, thank you sir !

Nico...damn dude you're right !! I've speed up on a idea (more a composition actually) wich pop at my brain when i heared Strange behaviors. But you do well to replace the concept on the "unusual" side.
First, false start. :banghead: ... challenge well started !

After some thinking, i've isolate some concepts :
- A hunter who goes in a municipal pool to hunt a man with a duck lifesaver.
- Mouses making a machinery to catch cheese on a mouse swatter
- one pigeon with false wing try to fly from a rooftop, with some pigeon around who laugh and joke. (but it's approaching a concept i've see, so renounce this one)
and the last, surely the one i'll try, a man awaked in the night goes in the kitchen and see his dog playing poker around the table with his friends, dog of the neighborhood.

be free to say what you think about. :)

I like the last two ideas:)

I think you´d try the pigeons one cause the dogs playing cards is an idea that I saw, don´t remember when, haha but I saw it. For example:

Héhé , great sketches Cyril !!

The little boy bitten could be interesting... so could be the poker party ... well even if it already been made , dogs could be funny ... I feel like there a lot of birds concepts around (and I'm the one to talk) so dogs could make something different ... my 2 cents :)

Anyway I'm sure you're gonna make something really cool !

Hi all,
This is the final concept on the idea of the dogs poker party. Camera angle will be place with the modeling, this is only a top view of the scene, and not the final angle.
Maybe use a table level view with the man in the background, don't now.
hope you like.

Hey Steven, glad to see you here. Don't worry you've got time to do a great illustration, i'm waiting to see what you plan to do.

Gonzalo and Artur, i understand your reluctance about dog, but this is old painting style, and i hope to do a more cartoonish things.
The mix of pets are very interesting, but it depend on my capability to design more of one category of pet and caracter, it's new for me and i don't know yet if i'll have this skill. I keep this idea in mind, and see if the dogs design could be plenty or not.
Thanks both guys. :)

Stephane, thanks a lot.
i guess made an interior scene is more in my technical skill, so i'll try to do the poker finally. And you're right, lot of birds around.
If i'd time (lol) maybe try the bitten boy in the illustration forum :D

great idea with the dogs. Maybe the boy should look half asleep cause he woke up from some noise and caught the dogs red handed. The image i have in mind then is the boy rubbing in his eye while turning on the light with the other hand.

Another little tought, is to change the activity of the dogs a little. I think it's a bit too much inspired by the paintings.

cheers and keep it up.

Daddymack, it's right, the both concept could be really interesting but 2 thing for the poker party : try to design cartoon caracter and a interior environement which is more in my skill.
Maybe i'll try the bitten boy in illus forum...why not. :scream:
Thanks you :)

Gonzalo gracias amigo mio. 2D before 3D friend, always to shy of spend time in rough 3D.

Nico, same thing for the light turned by the boy, héhé it's an idea i've in mind ! ! i've some ideas too, with the activity of dogs, but i prefer let them around the table at this time, maybe with time and some skills.... :D
I'm still not regular for the caracter rigging, but there is a start...

Hey Cyril,

You've been busy huh.
I got a few crits so please don't shoot me. The face is a simple and cartoonishly looking one, but maybe a bit too little detail to be just right. Also, don't know if you are gonna rig and animate the guy, but for that the topology will be a problem i think. I doubt that for such a simple face it shouldn't be hard to do a nice topology.

For the Clothes, they look nice in zbrush, but with the lighting you did in 3dmax you don't notice half of the detail. I think you could get the same result with traditional modeling. I think it would make more sence of doing the face in zbrush than the clothes. But then i don't think you'll be anything with the triangles.

i hope you appreaciate me being hard to you :banghead:

cheers man

SweD
07-02-2007, 10:35 PM
Overcontrast, thank you mate, have fun too, i'll take a look on your entry. :)

no problem Nico, i really appreciate you take time to give me your feeling about my work.
So, i take my gun.:scream:

With the whole project for this challenge, it's clearly a cartoonish style i want to do. I really think, as you said, take time with the face in Zbrush, to offer a good detail level, and help the character to be more expressive, but not to much (for the details).
My goal isn't to animate it, just make a good scene with funny characters.
But i understand and agree your point of view on the topology for animation.
Even if it shold be possible to do, i don't know if i personnaly can.

For the clothes, it's just too simple to do in zbrush :scream:, for fun of course.
However i understand your problem on the difference between Zb and max ,with the lightning. My fault. I havn't specify it's just a default lightning, not finalized for the details, you're right on this point.

I count on the lightning and texturing to give sense to it, and there is a big job to do on textures.
Of course, modeling isn't still perfect, lot of work to do to obtain a great globale shape.

(i hope my english is intelligible from start to end :D)

See you to the next step Nico ;)

Nothingness
07-02-2007, 11:04 PM
okay,

this makes me understand it all a lot better. For the head then, if you don't need a lot of detail, i would suggest traditional modeling. But if you need a clay looking cartoonish style, then zbrush is off course the thing to use. For cartoonish style, the textures and shading are really important.

cheers en much fun

Anubis, i see :scream: . I don't want to do a clay style for the whole scene, i think it could be too much. No just have a good render, a kind of pixar style, or like a R.Rosenman piece with this sort of character.

Hey this looks good so far! I wanted to make a critique on the modeling of the pajamas. I think right now it looks kinda randomly puffy as opposed to having certain wrinkles and folds in the right places. Look at your points of tension in the arms, crotch, neckline, etc. Try just putting something similar on your own body to see how it looks. It would be really cool and convincing if you were able to get just the right kind of wrinkles and folds in the jammies so people's eyes aren't jumping there first and noticing something like that and missing the rest of your character/animation. Even if it is cartoony, just a hint of that kind of believablility will put it over the edge imho.

keep rocking! :buttrock:
