View Full Version : LW + Geforce 8800GTS
Ultimatum 06-25-2007, 04:47 PM Hi,
I just got me a new system (q6600, Geforce 8800GTS, 4gb RAM). It´s great but I have noticed that in LW Modeler the perspective viewport freezes from time to time. Other viewports work fine. The perspective viewport freezes so you can´t rotate the view of. When I turn that viewport to a single view (button 0) it recovers and work for a while.
Any ideas of how to fix this? Oh, and I use LW 8.2.
When I purchased the Geforce 8800 I knew that it had caused some problems with Maya but I wasn´t expecting any with LW.

1. Make sure you get the latest drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp)
2. Upgrade (http://www.newtek-europe.com/uk/support/download.html) your LightWave to 8.5, it's a free upgrade and provides bug fixes and new features. Make sure you read the notes we spent hours on, particularly the one about the dongle driver version. That way there won't be a post saying "my dongle isn't recognised..." ;)

I have noticed a flickering every now and then with my 8800 GTS in Lightwave 9.2 running in Windows XP 64-bit. This seems to happen as I am moving from screen to screen. For example, if I want to go from the Node screen to the camera view screen. I'm thinking of taking my card back this weekwend.

i currently have the geoforce 7950. it's pretty solid. i'm running lw 9.2 32 bit on a xp. so i guess i'm sticking to the card. thanks for the reply. hope this helps.
Currently i can only discourage anyone from buying a Geforce 8xxx series card for 3D work. While it works in some cases, in most it will behave strange and often cause problems.
Chances are Nvidia will remedy the situation by making drivers more stable over time, but currently you are way better served with a GeForce 7xxx series card.
Cheers

I get the annoying freeze every few minutes.
I wonder if this is why 9.2 is so unstable for me as well. I've gone back to 9.0 because I cant get jack done in 9.2 with the constant crashing.
Anyone else with 8800/LW9.2 Woes?

My system is:
Geforce 8800GTX - Win XP 64bit - LW 9.2
GFX driver: 6.14.10.9792
I've not experienced any inconviences what so ever, either in Modeler og Layout.
I run two monitors:
Dell 19" and EIZO Flexscan S2410W
Works smoothly.

I am using an 8800GTX on Vista 64, and so far LW 9.2 is working fine with it....

By chance have you had the same good luck with other OpenGL apps? Games i'm sure are fine, but I've read that the 8800 series has had issues with a fair number of OpenGL apps.
I want badly to buy one but have held off until the most serious complaints have been delt with.
Thanks in advance,
-Steve

I haven't used Blender extensively by any means, but I have been fiddling around with it now and again, and that too hasn't had a hitch.
If I remember right, it was the drivers that came out in April that resolved almost all of the stability issues I was having, and they've had a couple releases since then. I would have been very reluctant to recommend it before then, but these last couple months have been quite problem free for me, at least when it comes to the 8800.... As an 'fyi', I'm also running the overclocked XFX version of the 8800GTX.
Oh, and it lets me run Flight Simulator X at a halfway decent framerate! :D

Ahh, I have an AMD Opteron system. I'll have to do some driver testing when I have the time...
