Hi guyz I wanna thank lost pencil for their wonderful work...

Ok now to buisness, I learned the way to rig a wheel to rotate based on distance using the lost pencil method... but I want my car to go up mountains and such and I need to alter it to wor properly, can I get some suggestions on how to throw the y var in the equation??

Hey Squeige!

You are welcome and that's a good question. Essentially you need to measure the distance traveled by the wheel between two points in three dimensions instead of just two. So if you figure out (borrow, discover, or what have you) the equation to do that, then this will get you a good part of the way. You can get really fancy by using Matrix algebra to do these types of calculations, but a set of formulas will work just as well. Also, it may be possible to use Mel functions to aid in this endeavor.

The other part of getting there, will be dependent on finding the conditionals that will determine which way the wheel should turn (as it goes in the additional up and down dimension).

I may consider updating my tutorial to do this, but it won't be for a while since play (err... I mean work) is currently getting in the way.

Well I got it to work I can send u an example... only problems are comming up with the conditionals since I had to use absolute values for distance IE if the car is going down a path when it hits
-z it would flip... but now the weel rotates forward no matter what direction is heading, I was thinking of just adding an extra attrib to my ctrl and keying that to flip when I want.... any ideas??
whats ure email ill show u what i have..

Hey Squeige, Cool! Sure, just email it to paul@lostpencil.com... no guarantee I'll have a lot of time to look at it, but if I can find a minute I will.

let me take this thread to thank lostpencil for this cool video tutorial. I really love the way you explained the math part! You are using alias sketchbook aren't you? thats a really cool way of explaining math formulas :applause:

Hi Thomas! You are very welcome! I figure that if you know what's going on behind the scenes it will better equip you when you need to make changes or improvements. I actually recorded the session using Painter 7 - but any painting package would do.
