OK, here's a first idea, which came to my mind. It's an octopus riding a sand buggy which is pulling another octopus in a para glider.

Once again it all looks beautifully done and once again your attention to detail is superb. The elegant design of everything, plus the mix of hard geometric shapes with soft puffy seat padding shows some really superb modeling skills. Just a thought though: I'm wondering if that's all the framework you plan for the higher part of the chair because at the moment it doesn't seem strong enough to support much weight. Although maybe I'm just not interpreting correctly how the chair works

Mark: Thanks for your support. You are right. The back part of the chair looks a little weak. I have to think about that. Right now I have added a small supporting tube, just to prevent it from falling down.
On the other hand the whole cockpit is filled with water. So weight doesn't really count in this matter. :scream:

I spent the last days modelling another door for the buggy. Now that it is finished I must realise that my machine crashes while rendering. I think it's a lack of memory. Total amound of polygons is now about 10.000.000.
Have to try again tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to show a WIP than.:arteest:

I am a little depressed at the moment. My machine can't handle the rendering anymore.

I think modelling is done for now. Next step will be the octopus.

Fantastic! The level of detail is wonderful. The sucker-like details around those arms are a brilliant touch too. That's bad luck about the rendering problems. It looks like you're in the same situation as me - I'm now forced to render my spaceship in 3 bits. I'll post a bit more of an explanation over at my thread.

Perhaps that approach could get you rendering again.

Your modelling of the octopus buggy is amazing! it's great when somebody pays attention to all the little details that makes something stand out.

I can understand your memory woes, only recently I was doing all my 3D work with only 512 Mb which really sucked. I now have 1.5 gb but haven't pushed it to it's limits...yet.
Good luck with your excellent model.

Thanks Jason, I am saving all my money for a new machine so I don't want to spend money for some extra RAM for this old one here.

Here's a first WIP of the octopus. It's still very basic. Organic models are much harder for me to model than those inorganic ones.

Nice start on the octopus. You say that organic models are more difficult than the inorganic ones but I have a hunch your octopus is going to look excellent

Later in the year was the same time when I would like to buy a new machine. Unfortunately I've lost my job end of march and since now haven't been able to find a new one.
I now have decided to put together a demo reel and next to the field I am educated in (microbiology) try to find a job in the CG field.

That's one smart looking palm tree. I'm very impressed with how the leaf fronds all grow out of the centre. I like the texture you've set up for the bark too. Great to see some new updates from you buddy

Looking really good. The sand is very believable - I found myself checking the shadows just to check if it was a photo. I wouldn't have a clue how to put skid marks or tyre tracks into that sand. My first guess would be a displacement map or even paint it in during post work, but I'm sure some of the smart people here know some cool tricks

I started modelling the glider. Have to add details.

And some good news. A friend sold me his copy of Maxon Cinema 4D. I will go on using XSI for modelling but now have BodyPaint 3D for texturing.

I started to texture the octopus. Right now I have done everything in Photoshop. Now I have to switch to BodyPaint 3D to get rid of the seams. But on the first glimpse the GUI looks a bit strange. I hope I will manage to learn it.

I reworked the seam area in BodyPaint 3D and placed a very basic rig into the octopus. (Just some IK chains). I hope it's enough to position the octopus because I have no idea on how to do a "real" rig.

That's one fantastic octopus and it's looking so real it's a bit spooky. The high-res version is beautiful.

Maybe a bit of watery sparkle on its skin could be nice, but I admit it already looks brilliant.

Mark: Thanks man. Your support is really encouraging. About the watery sparkle: They would only appear if the octopus would be outside the water. But the cockpit is full it.

Fernando: Thanks as well. Your right. It's only one pose. So I can tweak CPs after I posed the bones. Hopefully we will be able to see everything in one screen. Till now the rendering problem isn't solved.
To speed up the above render I've hidden the glass. It still took like ages to render it.

Your new render looks brilliant. I think I know what you mean about your rendering problems. (My scene is now broken up into 7 sections just to make rendering possible, and rendering each section takes a very long time.) So just keep at it mate, because the results you're getting are superb

Again Mark and Fernando, thank you very much.

Today is the day where I can finally announce that the modeling process is done. Maybe some minor things will pop to my mind later but for now I will continue with texturing the buggy and the glider.
I think breaking up the scene could be a good solution. I only have to find out how that will work because of all the glass which should have reflection and refraction.

A quick test I did.
Rendering is not a problem as long as I abandon my beloved octopus like door. Without a new machine there will be no chance to render it. Even if I try to render only the door it would take more time than this challenge last. I may have to model a much more simple door.

Good news. I couldn't believe that it should not be possible to render the octopus like door. The polycount of it isn't that much higher than the rest of the buggy. So I tried to export them as obj. files and re-import them into XSI and

Hey Torsten, that is simply awesome.... woooww I love the buggy and the amazing door ( great solution mate!!) and like a lot the composition for your scene. Perhaps the palms need to be taller (the left and right palm mainly, and creat a "U" shape for the palms line).

The palm trees are now only copies of one render. I will tweak them different and make the a little bigger.

Right now I have started to render out some parts of the buggy in final resolution, which will be 2500 x 3571. I am splitting it into lots of different passes, so I can easily modify them in compositing process. Also it keeps the render time in an acceptable range. I am just a little concerned about the amount of memory Photoshop will use to put all those parts together.

I am now nearly finished with the rendering process for the buggy. Just 3 passes left. After that I have to work on textures for the glider and than render it. Really hope to make it in time.

So I finished the rendering process for the buggy. Here's an image in 1/3 size.

Photoshop is already at it's limit. So post work will be quite difficult. But I will try.

So, I have rendered all passes, but I may have to re-render some of them, because some parts seem to be overexposed.

Hey Torsten, wooooww! great my friend !! I love your fearless octopus!! For sure is an awesome image! cool!!
I agree with you about over exposed zones: The palms are a bit over exposed (I think a darker green on the leafs) and the bottom part of the buggy (the zone of the motor ).
I think you need to move the palm that is behind of the buggy cockpit, the diffraction makes a strange looks on that palm. Perhaps moving to the right ( too look a bit the trunk ) or to the center ( making it a bit smaller).
Maybe the wheels of the bugy need some sand on it (you can add with photoshop or add sand to the UV map of the wheels), for now they looks really new :) (Seem not to have been shot :D ) And perhaps a more marked trail on the sand.
A question: your concept its with the buggy stopped? or in motion? I think you can add a small dust-sand cloud behind the buggy As if the buggy will eventually stop ( if your concept is with buggy stopped :))

Think the glider texture its a bit "solid", perhaps you need a more translucent texture for a more fabric texture look on it, and i dont like the text on the glider, sorry :D Maybe a different colour strips on it.

I do dare this large comment because I think that your concept is one of the coolest on the challenge :thumbsup:

Wow! I've never known what an octopus doing that looks like. Well now I do know! It's great fun seeing it all come together like that. Great stuff! I agree with Fernando about the palm tree behind the driver. It seems to look like it's part of the buggy. At first I thought you could make that palm tree taller, but then the rope to the parachute would get caught in it. So maybe you could take it out.

No one could ever accuse you of not depicting some strange behavior! The scary thing is, you're making it look possible

Fernando: Thank you very much my friend. I really appreciate your large comment. I have now re-rendered the overexposed parts and removed the right palm tree for once. I may add it later in a different position. Dust, sand and scratches will be added in PS. The concept was with the buggy in motion, but I may stop it.
The text on the parachute is gone. It was just a try and I didn't like it either.

With the June full moon only days ahead and so the time for the yearly Grand Caribbean Beach Race almost there, octopuses from all over the ocean spend the nights practicing for this big event. Every night during these days all the beaches were crowded with octopuses in their buggies and gliders.
But nobody ever expected such a strange behaviour as exhibit by Rodell and Lasil. Throwing their nocturnality over board they start practicing even at day time just to make sure that this year they are not beaten by a blink of an eye from the all time favourites Fayard and Marques.

Congratulations - it looks brilliant. I've always been impressed by your ability to produce beautifully detailed and utterly believable machinery and once again you've come up with the goods. I'm glad you were able to get through your render problems too. This image is a lot of fun and definitely qualifies as strange behavior. Good luck

Hey Torsten, great great work my friend. I simply love your concept , really cool !! The buggy is amazing and the cockpit is wonderful. The atmosphere on your scene is an authentic caribean day ( and i can say that :D ) The octopus are magnificent, really great! Even Michael Schumacher will have up problems with these two brave octopus!! Again, really great art work Torsten! Congratulations and good luck my friend!! Cheers! :beer:

Fernando: I am really glad you like my entry and that you think I have matched an authentic caribbean day. My last time I have been there was in 1993 (man I am getting old) and I really hope I will find the time and money to go there again. Actually Mexico is on our "to go list" :scream:
