View Full Version : Creating Unreal Tournament 2003 Levels with Maya
M_Orlich 03-20-2003, 08:23 PM hi,
I was wondering if anyone else here has or is building UT2003 levels?
I'm just getting started with it and lots of questions keep popping up.
Before I start enundating this forum with them I wanted to make sure they weren't going to fall on deaf ears.
thanks,
matthew

I am pretty sure for most of you level building you will want to do it UnrealED. You can use Maya for level objects to import into your levels. At least that was how it was when working with Unreal Tournament, it might have changed in the new one.

You can build all your map in Maya export is as static mesh with the ActorX plugin for maya and import it in UnrealED .. you only have to bild some VIS blocker in Unrealed so that the performance of the map keep good.

There's also a plugin for the PLE that makes exporting meshes into the editor quite easy. I glanced over an actor x tutorial and it seemed like there was a few more steps involved.
Intitally I was hoping to build the whole level with maya, but am not sure this the best way. The unreal editor is quite easy and putting water and things in a snap. You have to be really careful how you edit geometry in maya or it doesn't convert over properly.
One thing i'm having trouble with is scale. I find maya funny that way. i can't seem to build things the right size.
Get on it, so you can help me figure this stuff out.:)

Just remember Maya uses cm as its unit of measure so you need to scale things up or build them accordingly.

I dont really like the editor that comes with unreal. it is weird. i guess it is cool with stairs and stuff as primitives. but maya is much easier to move around. and its is best to use that one plugin that M_Orlich brought up.
can you do new characters in Maya. that would be really cool
