The crew of a tramp-steamer unload a very odd cargo at a run-down dock.

I want to use this challenge to make an image that really tells a story, since most of my work tends to be simply backgrounds rather than illustrations.

I realise the image is a bit too 'busy' at the moment - I'm working on a version that's much clearer to read. Might add some rain, too.

Hello Alex,

I'm interested in how you're going to paint the rain (if you choose to) and how you're going to use it to tell the story.

Very rough, trying to get closer to the atmosphere I had in mind, before locking down details. Much happier with this one, though I think I prefer the composition of the first image.

The new colour palette should make it much easier to 'read' as an image.

Hey Alex,
Welcome to the challenge!

Great sketches! I think the first one is more storytelling, like composition of it better too. But in the second one you got some special mood. Any chance of combining them?

Going to follow your progress with big interest!

Just love the colors in the last one, lost some details, but looks you got your feet on the right spot, waiting to see the final art, great work, keep it up

I prefer the look and mood of the second painting, and I think it's a fantastic image either way, but at this stage I can't honestly tell what's strange about the scenario :hmm: I guess the answer's in the details, but when that's the case, you're in danger of being too subtle.

Very true - I think it might be an idea to post some detail sketches next, explain the idea properly (and see if people still like it).

Thanks for all your comments

Yes, this is indeed a great concept drawing. But I fail to see the "strange behaviour" here. I guess you add more storytelling details later.

It was a bit unclear in my initial sketches what the 'Strange Cargo' actually was.
Here are some sketches which should explain it all a bit further...

Sketched over rough 3D geometry built in Sketchup 6.

Critiques welcome.

Hi Alex, I must agree with few other replays that the original image has a better feel, let me give you my 2 cents.

Ok first let me start how I perceive the original image and what I like about it and then Iíll comment on the new one.

It's the middle of the night and the "thiefs" are sneaking out with a "treasure". Meanwhile "ninjas" are ready to strike and claim the "treasure".

That was first impression. I just reed your description and definitely doesn't match what I see but this is only a sketch so it's all good.

What I like about this image is the feel of the little town right on the water. At this town at this hour you can feel unanimous with a lot of dark places to hide and ambush.

New image is more refined but it lost it's charm and suspense. Now I definitely see that the cargo is being taken out of the ship but what is the story? The ship looks more modern yet the guys that are carrying the cargo look retro. There is a guy with a guitar under umbrella i guess he's the boss? The new building seems more of a villa. Now the strangest thing on this image is the guy under the deck, I think he's taking a break, and he looks bored.

So Alex you have a great concept but make sure that you develop a great story for it and then make sure you convey it clearly to the audience so there wonít be any confusion about what you are trying to show.

Strangeness factor 2 (for the guy under the deck :)

0 - normal

10 - bizarre

I hope this is helpfull. good luck

Thanks for the feedback!

I liked the original sketch, too - the only problem is that there is nothing inherently 'strange' about it. Especially on a forum like this, pirates fighting ninjas seems to be considered perfectly normal behaviour...

The ship looks more modern yet the guys that are carrying the cargo look retro. There is a guy with a guitar under umbrella i guess he's the boss?

It was details like this that I was adding to make the scene more 'strange'. The scene was meant to show some turn-of the century looking guards unloading a gorilla on a stretcher and a glowing skull in a bell jar from a motor yacht, while their commander plays the guitar...

Maybe that's 'surreal' rather than 'strange' behaviour... I'll think about reworking it.

Take care

AJ

i liked the original sketches as well...i feel the new one has less mood and its to clean...the original sketch had this run down china town feel to it i thought...

You know what - you're all right.

I'll try another version, going back to my original sketch.

Concept will probably change a bit, too - the one I was working with was a little 'off the wall' for this competition.

Thanks guys.

I've redesigned my concept slightly, based on some of the comments I recieved from the last one.

I've done two versions - hopefully the concept is slightly better, and certainly 'strange behaviour'.

Comment welcome, especially which one you prefer...

This is my second 'back to the drawing board' version.
Which one do you prefer?

I like version 1, because boat is not rusty. It would be great strange behavior to show these nice ladies and gentleman visiting this last_hole_on_the_earth bar, joyfully.

On your place I would somehow suggest that they are extra-happy, euforic that they will go in their favourite bar...!

i like version one because the red of the womans dress and the red strip on the boat blend well with the green background..the green background is softer on the eyes the brown in the second one feels to harsh and doesnt contrast well with the brightly colored clothing the guest are wearing...i am glad you went back to the sketchy concept it has so much more mood and atmosphere. i do however like the rundown boat in the second version because i think it adds something to the story that these fance dressed people are willing to take a rundown boat to get to this rundown dock..they must have some great food! but note that i do like the gray color and red pin strip on the first boat...so maybe if you kept that color design and made it more grungy? not alot just a little :) all up to you! goodluck!

 Great concepts Alex...

I prefer version one of the two latest updates - the greens and mist really add atmosphere and the neon sign and red dress really stand out

Though I prefer the older boat. I could virtually imagine this as a steam boat rather than a modern model - you know African Queen style boat

Great work and keep the updates coming :applause:

Hey Alex, beautiful sketches!! great !!

I prefer version 1, the bar sign put the reference for the whole atmosphere, nice! I agree with MrFreeman, perhaps a old steam boat be a great touch or a "postmodern" steam boat :D In your previous sketches you have one with a man under the dock and other with a ninja type men, maybe you can put a gang guys for a more dangerous atmosphere in this variation of your concept , only a comment :) Again great work Alex!

This is as close to 'line' art as I'm going to get - blocking in form and colour.

Now to add lighting and get it all finished...
