View Full Version : The Hapless Hero/Villian - Character Manuel M
ManuelM 03-20-2003, 06:49 PM hello everyone
originally, i wanted to participate in the animation challenge and therefore thought about a concept for a tragic hero. But for now, I will focus on modelling the character. If there`s still some time left, I´ll try to rig and animate him, as well

last update for today. i`m getting really tired now.
as you may have recognized, my hero will have a really cheap, self-made costume and jetpack. can you remeber those cool bonanza bikes? he recycled one, as he needed a device to control the jetpack...

With more of a BG I think I could suggest more, give more to you in this guys creation.Anyways it's spot on thus far.Keep up with the very nice work.

first of all, thanks for your kind comments. i will put up some info about my hapless hero tomorrow. i`ll have to ask a friend to help me with the translation :shame:
today, i concentrated on adding detail. discovered, that i`ll have to be carefull, when adding more geometry. otherwise, i could have a lot of trouble, when rigging the character.
what do you think ?

This one is really really funny!!
and the head is like the rat! Mouhahaha! :D
A little suggestion... make the mouse nose bended to the ground! just a little of gravity! and it will be even funnier because he will not be able to see really clear! :applause:
And the moustache would look cool too! I'm looking forward to it! (in the the mouse nose too!! of course!)
btw... how you've done the render wich looks like a draw-photo? I really like it! is it a photoshop filter?
ManuelM
03-25-2003, 11:09 AM
hey pabbloz
i`ll add the suggested details today. as you can see, i had my focus on the lower body for now. the funny thing is, that i recognized, that i was a bit out of training, when i started modeling. that`s why i decided to do the rat`s head and my heros face at the end of the modeling process because it will be the most important area, defining the character.
the "draw-photo" render is my first attempt in mental-ray, global illumination. i think, i chose too low values for photons or radius or whatsoever. the only filter i added is dof and noise.

ok - here comes the epic background story, you demanded. a lot of thanks to david aka dobermunk for helping me:
Ratman is the braniac son a New Zealand dockworker who left the Polynesian love of his life to fight for justice under the helm of the Australian marines. He slipped off the landing platform and drowned, forcing the Polynesian love of his life to work day and night in a postal office to support their somewhat peculiar son - Hubert.
As a result, Hubert grew up with very little parental guidance but with two characteristics that would define his life as a superhero -
- a naive passion for doing good for those who aren't quite convinced of their need to be done good and
- an intimate knowledge of rats, won while being locked away in the rat-infested storage rooms at the local postal office where his mother worked. Here he surmounted his fears, decided to become wiser, weedier, swimmier and raunchier than the rodents he so admired!
hehe, GREAT stuff, he looks awesome so far! can we see a non-smoothed version of the model?
nice job, looking forward to seeing more on this one.

unfortunately, from monday on, i`ll have to work on a project with a very tight deadline. so, I´m not sure, if i`ll still have the time, to finish this model just untill 04.30.03
I´m planning, to spend at least 2 or 3 hours a day in my ratman...

As I said before it's one to watch out for...............I like the modeling, the concept is being well translated. The textures have a very nice start with the rocket.
I like the buck teeth,he seems to be part rat with them jutting out like that. I hope you can find time to take him to the finish line,it would be worth it,well done.

thanks for the compliments, you guys. i`m really sorry for not checking your threads and giving you some feedback. unfortunately, i do not have that much time, so i`ll put it all into my character. you will surely see him animated.
you might have noticed, that i originally planned, to participate in the animation challenge. this was my concept:
this is my idea:
the villain (a big rat) prepares for a new robbery. for this purpose, he has constructed some kind of home-made jet pack. just when he activates the engines, in order to take of, big flames appear at the end of the exhaust pipes and set his fat, hairy tail on fire...
maya's rendering is really pickin' up...
i`m not really sure, what this means, translated. in fact, what you see on the image is only the default directional light maya render/ no shadows activated.
i also played around with shave a bit. i`m not sure, wether to add fur to his costume. looks cool for a still, but might be quite difficult to use for an animation.

no mental ray? interesting... these just look a bit better than what I remember maya's renderer to be (without heavy tweaking!)
Good job anyways

:bounce: U could disable fur on animation and enable on render ..yes?

Very cool, and impressive, I didn't realize that was a pillow till now!. Looking forward to more.
GREAT MODEL!
Def one of the best here.
I dig your concept. Only the earring has to go imho.
The steer is very funny.

thanks guys.
Only the earring has to go imho.
maybe you`re right. it might be a bit out of scale. i added the earring in order to make the model a bit more asymetrical. any suggestions what i could do instead ?
Maybe add some sewing or a patch with a different design.
What about a goodluck-teddybear, buckeld up his jet-engine??
He doesn't leave home wiyhout his teddy....hehe :D
And maybe a light on his vehicle...because he's such a safety firstdork. :D
He's gonna be fun!
