Well...
Stop joking, be serious just one second...

Many ideas in my head but I'm not sure that it fits the topic really well.

-I was thinking of a huge 500 pounds chick (not the girl, the bird) saying "pewpew" to his mother after breaking the 10 feets tall egg that she breed (past of "to brood" ? right ?)

-Other cool thing, a hen brood a huge egg but the chick is a dinausorus... (pretty simple)

I hope to other ideas because as I told you my ideas, I found that they suck now...

No I think I will sculpt it the best as I can in ZB and I will retopologize it with the new tool of zb3. It will be a cartoon character so I don't think that I will do huge detail work on ZB...

Thanks for these comments mates and girls ! ;)

Yeah I think this technique helps a lot. You can have a quick shape and then sculp it easily. I think the retopologize tool will help me to have a better shape if it is needed but the base shape is already good if you be careful in the creation of the Zsphere...
I think I will do a little vidéo to show you the creation.

whew, that looks a little scary :) hm, you want to go for cartoon. I think you added alot of detail for that? But it has alot of style.. perhaps you could try to not define the muscles this much and keep it in the basic form like the zspheres, if you prefer cartoon?

anyway, great to watch this progress, you'll probably find your solution soon :)

mdavid
06-29-2007, 12:42 AM
Beautiful modeling already! It's really great to see all those progress shots too. With the pursuit of a cartoony style I find that one thing that often helps with doing cartoon birds is to puff up the size of the cheeks. Also cartoon characters often have a slightly larger head.

http://www.mdavid.com.au/cg/cartoonbird.jpg

Nothing more than a suggestion of course because it sure looks like you really know what you're doing!

Thanks Patrick ! I think I will work more on the head, the problem is there I think. A great part of the body will be covered by fur so muscles are here to give a good shape.

Thanks Mark. I think for the moment he looks to realist. I have to find the best shape and expression to give him a stupid personnality. Now he only looks angry...

There are lots of proteins in an egg. :)

Very nice model man!!! Can´t wait to see this finished... This model deserves a great story! Your going to do have a story right ?? Not just a fly around to show the modeling skills... I really hope so..Good Luck and have fun....

Thanks Felipe. It should be a little short, around 20 sec. We should see the environment, the hen brooding her egg. Then the egg should break and the chick should cry and shout a huge sound, his mother snapped on the top of his head with a piece of the egg still stick at her back...
tadaa !

Yo! This thread is growing pretty fast! So far so good... Keep the tempo. I am awaiting first animation test, hopefuly soon.

Thanks Juraj ! I hope to keep a good tempo ! not so sure !

Wow! I turn my head for a moment and when I look back the bird has developed so much more. It's beautiful!

Thanks Mark ! The bird has grown a bit too fast !

The wings are big to enforce the feeling of bobybuilded chicken. I think it gives him a feeling of stupidity too.

You are right, any 3D package can get a zdepth pass, so you can do it in photoshop in post processing. You can do the same thing in after effect or any compositing software with an animation.

Grate progress since I visited your thread last time!

I like your models... Hen is clean and nice low poly, and it reflects the concept very well.

You wrote that UV's are not ready, but may I come with suggestion...
If you will get rid of that seam on the hips, it will be much easier to paint the texture. Right now the seam is going over the hip, and it's pretty exposed, but if you will make a cut between hips (all the way from inner edge of the left one to the inner edge of the right), then you can open there and sew UV's that going across the hip. You could also saw UV's going on the top of the body, so you would have one seam going on the middle line from lower edge of the beak between legs to the tip of the tail, and one crossing it. and your UV's would look like one single pelt. Then there is a natural cuts for leg, where they are attached to the body, and for wings.

Nice work, keep going!

Great work man.
I was wondering in the beginning how it was gonna end up when you only work in zbrush. But looks like i learned a nice workflow by seeing this. I was almost thinking about doing a face in zbrush, but i thought it was better to do the base mesh in maya. But I don't really like the topology tool much, and this is a great way. Combined with the transher tool this might be a very quick workflow for modeling instead of only detailing in zbrush.

I find Zbrush very helpfull for many things but I still haven't reach the point to do all the modeling in it. I love to model quickly with zphere to find a good overall shape but there is still some stuff to do in a classical 3d application. I haven't test the retopology tool of Zbrush but it can help me to skip the retopology stuff in maya. But I am so used to model in maya that I think it will be an heresy to do it in zbrush...
Thanks for your comment Nico ! ;)

About the feet and the legs, you are right, they are not anatomicaly perfect. I just thought that it could give him more a cartoon look.

Zbrush is really cool to sculpt but for the moment I'm fighting with my displace map which works bad ! The crazy thing is that I probably have to redo all the detailling stuff ! So I will do some clean UV in maya ( I didn't have any UV I would use GUV tile from zbrush) and transfert the UV on my detailed mesh in Zbrush. I hope that I will do this next week before leaving in holidays !

Here is a quick render test with normal map in real time. I'm not suppose to do my animation in real time but Mudbox generated it so I wanted to test it to see how it looks.
I'm still testing the displace render. I have some problem with it but I think I will find the solution soon...

07-16-2007, 06:53 PM
Looking realtime good :-) :bounce:

Maybe post the problem with the displacement and maybe it's obvious to some. I have had some trouble with it and i think i'll manage it. It only depends on how you do this in zbrush. But if your displacement map is good: convert it to RGB, smooth the model once (unless you are using maya 8 or younger - then you can use the approximation editor for a smooth at render time) and use approximation again for displacement node. In maya 8.5 you can't use both nodes anymore. So annoying.

I have some explosion of the mesh at render. It seems that the seams explode...
I have done some remapping to find a solution to that. I will see later with the new sculpt I'm doing...

Here is what I have for the moment in Maya after baking the high resolution over the low resolution in Mudbox.
Zbrush wasn't able to give me a good displacement map. So, I find another solution, bringing in mudbox the low resolution and the high resolution and doing a texture bake which looks better than any other solution in Zbrush.
I did good UV in Maya on the low res mech and the high res mesh have no uv... Weird but works fine. I still have to fix the seams of the head and the nails.
A new test later...
Here is a render in Maya with Mental Ray and the Misss fast skin. 3 lights no GI no FG no Occlusion map...

Nothingness
07-16-2007, 10:09 PM
great test

skin looks much more funny now.
I think i see a little wrong displacement at one of the toes of the right foot.

zbrush can be a pain the butt when comming to displacement. I had a big problem when photoshop assigns a different color profile and the 50% gray becomes 58%. Giving the entire mesh a blown up look. Maybe have a look at that.

if you kept the ZB2 install, I invite you to import in it the high resolution from ZB3, in obj, and then use the reconstruct subdiv option in geometry slot to go down and to find the low resolution. Then you can create your displacement map with displace exporter 2.

I really like the way it turned out but i do have one remark for the one without the fur... it might be the lights working towards this but the skin feels a little roasted in places... like he came out of an over or something... these parts are hidden by fur for the most part so it might now be a great deal...

have a very nice holiday, relax and enjoy them,
George

Thanks for your comments George. I will look if I can do something.

Wow! My eyes are popping out of my head here when I look at your new updates. Your tex work is amazing! I love it! Have a great holiday

this is just looking great, such personallity to this little chick, I think he looks better without the fur, perhaps just make those parts a bit darker of a shader.. would look good, I can't wait to see him animated, Kinda big baby Hugie..

Thanks Uri. I think I will work more on the fur but I have so many other things to do !

Great Texture work
