Awesome job gpepper. I like the idea of your theme. Very original. The modeling, texturing and rendering looks great so far. The muscle definition is very convincing. Love the expressions on the face.

May I suggest to add some green shading between muscles to define the shapes some more. Also some strong veins on his biceps and stomach could add nice touches.

Cant wait to see more. Good luck with the contest.

Here is a quick test in maya to render the hen. For the moment only a sss shader and the color maps and a displace map. I have to connect a bump map and a specular map too !

here is the shader and all the texture I use for the hen. Many textures ! diffuse, subdermal, epidermal, bump with a normal map generated in ZB, differents maps to give the weight of each layer of the SSS, specularity, etc.

Thanks Mathias !

I first paint the diffuse in Zbrush using poly painting and projection master. I use some skin texture taken on some hens' pictures.
Then I export the displacement map with ZB and the normal map too.
The displacement map in tif is converted in .map.

Then in photoshop I do some transformation with the diffuse map to have the subdermal and the back scatter color. Most of the time, this is just a color correction of the diffuse but sometimes I can put some veins and more details if I want to see some details in transparency...
The specular is created with the normal map and the diffuse mixed all together.

The back scatter and subdermal weight are painted in zbrush

The size of the diffuse, the diplace and the normal map is 2048X2048. The other maps are 1024X1024 for the maps which are the SSS's layers and the weight of these layers are 512X512, that's enough I think.
It is possible that my mental ray doesn't like this huge amount of maps ! I think that I should reduce some of them before doing the final layer or I should compose the two characters...

This guy "déboîte grave"...

awesome texture mate  just remain you to add some freaky feathers :scream:

Merci copaing ! ça me fait vraiment plaisir venant de toi mon maître !

I just don't work to much. I spent the last two years having this technique in me but nothing to let it speak. Now I have this pipeline which seems to work a bit so I spend less time doing test.
But It is not finished, I have to put some other details on the hen mother and then doing the environment which isn't as easy as it seems ! When I will be at this point I would like to be Lemog who model architectural things better than everybody I use to know !
I just have to do a hens' house, this will not be the Universal thing you do !

Cool progress !
may be too bright texturing on the house. I'll see it more dirty or with more ground spatters or something else. So the roof texture is a little bit lowres or too smoothed.
But it depends on the camera moves you want to do. May be it'll be good.
I know there's not much time left, so good luck to finish ! And you'll finish that !! ;-)

I don't know, this is sure that the roof is not so good, I will see if I have time to fix this. Many parts of the texturing were done quickly so it could be better...
I have to stay concentrated on on thig, the animation of this camera and then the chicken...

cool idea to use real camera movement. is that hard to learn? i've been interested in trying that sort of thing but have no idea where to begin.

Thanks ! No it is not so hard to learn. I use Icarus which is a free softare because it is not for commercial use. This is the old "PFtrack". You can download it and some video tutorials here (http://www.peerlessproductions.com/tuts/pages/Icarus.html).

The probleme is that I didn't use the same camera angle so I did some translation and scale of the group and it increase the camera shaking.I'm doing some new tests. Few shots later !

Well I have to say that for the moment I just use it in post. My renders are mapped on a plane...
I tried to use the xstream plugin but I didn't manage to do what I want !

Wow, that's looking great!
I like the way you distribute the depth of field, keeping focus where it's needed!
Just a little bitty comment... Some of the lines are looking too strait and clean, like the front panels of the roof and the middle support pole of the house. What about deforming them just a bit, adding some irregularity? And another hing is the shadows behind the house and beside that foreground thing (I guess it's for feeding chickens), don't you think they look a bit too dark?
Just some thoughts, feel free to ignore :)
Looking forward for final animation!

Here is a quick integration. I have many things to tweak but I don't know if I will have the time. First things, I can't render everything in the same render ! I thought I would have this problem. So every thing is separated. The bad thing is that I don't have so much time to rerender and recompose. It is possible that the final animation will not be as good as I wanted !

Thanks Laurent, Martin, Mark and Tomas ! Having such cool comments from you, who I consider as Huge artists, give me a trus good feeling, right in the heart !
I can't do better with the Hen, she is cut a little by the placement of the chicken. I don't have enough time to recalculate with a new position, it takes too long but the final render of the characters is more lighted, you will see the final tomorrow.
I'm just waiting for the render to finish and then I could start the post effects.
As I told you early in the day, I hope to put a little Making of at the end of the animation.
See U soon guys and thanks again for the visit !

Yeeeha! That's gonna be cool! Henster is an awesome character! When I see, I hear a movie trailer's dark voice... "Those times.... no hope...no way out...A new messiah born...to collect all desperated eggs and chickens to rule the world...it was called...Henster...and the henishment begun"

Ok, enough of kidding. GOGOGO :buttrock:

So girls and guys, here is my the grand final !
I put a making of at the bottom of my animation.
The music is from Riverside-Out of myself-Loose Heart.

Just few things about this animation:

First , why did I choose this character ?
There is a joke that I use to know when I was a teenager. It was this:

What is the cry of a 300 pounds chicken ?
The answer is:

PIOU PIOU !

So it is ridiculous ! But I decided to do it in 3D, a huge Chick ! But when I started to think about it, I told myself that the mother must suffer a lot to lay the egg of this monster. Is the mother of the 300 pounds chicken 1000 pounds or is she a normal hen ? So I decided that she will be normal with an anormal child...
Another idea was to make an animation of a werechicken. At full moon, the hen is laying and the chicken get bigger and bigger ! A cool animation with animated displacement could be done ! Maybe I will try this the next time !
So U understood that the idea of this animation was only a bad joke.

But there is a story behind this picture and animation:

THE WERECHICKEN:

In a very beautiful farm in the french alps, some terrible thing happened. A poor hen bringed to life a huge chicken at full moon. WE call him the Werechicken ! As you can imagine the poor chicken was hard to lay and his mother died during this horrible part of her little existence...
In the morning the chicken woke up and was looking for his mother. He called her name:

-Piou piou ! Piou piou ! Piou piou ?

No answer...

He was very sad, and alone...
You can imagine how long it took to him to understand what happened...
I think he still haven't realized.
And somewhere in the french Alps, A huge chicken pecks seeds with his mother still over his head...

What a strange behavior...

I heard 17 days left ?
Cool to hear this even if I don't know if I can push higher my composition. Maybe adding some particles...

Really nice !!! And great making-of !
If there's 17 days left, maybe you can render again the animation part where the characters shadows are a little bit too dark. And it's a good idea about the particles to make sand or dust on the ground.

anyway, congratulations you've done a really good work and adding the gpepper's touch ! It's precious. :buttrock:
You have finished it !

then see U for the next one. maybe. (If i manage to start this one  )

Wonderful, Gilles dear :)

That is such a freaky shot - and the story also makes it really sad... poor Rambo, can't find his mom.
I love the making of too, it's some really nice tricks in your workflow. I'm sure a lot of us will benefit from it.

Congrats for the splendid finish

Thanks for the story... it's the cherry on the cake...

I must agree with Tit-Co... if you have time... a little, that would be interesting to have the shadows "débouchées"...
...et + si affinités :scream: (voir suggestion dans l'Echoppe)
