hey buddies! Thank you so much for so quickly jump into my thread :)
I also have some ideas, so better put them down before they vanish away:
- staying awake for 3 days (or at least trying to)
- what love makes u do it (a bit cliche I guess)
- stakeout moment (silly outfits or something... SWAT acting like bushes and trees)
- aliens watching sci-fi (probably something with humans and laughing to our silly "costumes")
- more to come... hopefuly in sketch forms
06-25-2007, 10:16 AM
dude, I love the SWAT idea! if you pulled that off right, that could be totally f'ing hillarious. Have one of them tripping behind, as he's holding just a part of a picket fence as his cover. haha..thatd be great.
06-25-2007, 11:26 AM

07-09-2007, 10:30 PM
These r 3 of my latest ideas for this challenge. I still didnt completely forgot about those that I put down some posts ago, I just wanted to make some more of them and pick the right one later.
1 - a fisherman is surprised that fishes are going into his way and jumping into his boat by themself, not knowing that behind him a whole island got ouf of the water (for now in a form of a giant crab)
2 - a plant that should eat insects is a vegetarian, attacking a poor daisy
3 - a bounch of aliens came to the earth and tried to sneak into the pentagon, spying on some informations... but unfortunately they were missleaded by a scarecrow which they saw first, thought thats how ppl really look like. a crowd of surprised generals will be around, while they try to pick out of their camouflage.
Compositions are not yet final, as well as not characters. These r just ideas and quick realisations of them so I wont forget them :)
07-09-2007, 11:00 PM
Love the first two thumbs, the first most of all, but they all have great personality and detail even this early. Can't wait to see where you take this.
07-09-2007, 11:26 PM
wicked sketches and very cool concepts, the third concept is my favorit, that idea is very strange.
07-10-2007, 12:15 AM
Looking for seeing more!
07-10-2007, 01:03 AM
Great Sketches Blaz!More drama in the first one and more humor in 2 & 3.
Personaly love N°1 ,think this piece has got a lot of power, drama and dynamics. Can already see the fisherman's expression on his face by seeing those fishes jumping in his barc.Ronfllll:D
Just a thought after seeing yo sketches ofcourse, as all the ideas sounds great and so just looking forward to see which one youll pick.Cheers!
07-10-2007, 05:34 AM
Number 2 could be a winner, if you had the flower scaring a bunch of venus fly traps or something. Like they are cowering to the cute one. I like the mailman dude too, but the giant crab is something I've seen too often to get too excited about.
Really great ideas, and really great line work.. I'll have to watch this develop!
07-10-2007, 12:42 PM
They'll could all work, but i love the crab idea......visually it would look great.
07-10-2007, 01:15 PM
Fantastic sketches, you could develop all three, but I like idea nš3 the most, I think it has a lot of possibilities, it could end in a lot of great images. The crab is good too, btw look at this:
it is an image by Bernie Wrightson. I always remember it whenever I come by an old river of Spain.
07-11-2007, 12:50 PM
Glad to re-examine you here,
I think that you to go to make us good thing.
07-14-2007, 07:09 PM
Hi! This is my 4th concept... its about barbarian horde, maybe even army of death.. something frightening and demolishing... who are lost. In front, under the signs sits a scout, watching the map for the 100 time, behind him there is a whole army waiting unpatiently. Im thinking of extending the canvas, so I could portray more of the soldiers... some of them stuborn and unwilling to continue, some of them having fun while waiting, some of them sleeping etc. I know that this sketch is really messy but its something quick just to remember the concept.
07-14-2007, 08:24 PM
I love your latest concept, either that or the aliens-in-general idea, I thought that was hilarious. :D Although this concept is just as funny...you have to give the scout a really confused look on his face, maybe having his wife nearby going 'I TOLD you we should have asked for directions at the last tavern...!'
07-14-2007, 10:11 PM
I love it, Blaz! love the concept, it reads really clearly, even with your scratchy spped-paint. And the colors are bold and fantastic. Go go go! I expect nothing less than the beautiful painting you did for the last Challenge.
07-14-2007, 11:57 PM
Thnx guyz! I decided to go a bit further with the latest concept, since walrus and paperclip gave it a bless :D My spare would be aliens in pentagon... and thnx to Ramitxon for giving me link to that awesome image! I was stunned!
And about this last update, I extended the canvas size, gave it more unusual proportions and tried 3 different color schemes. First is this winter one, second somehow a day light but depresive mood and the last one is from hell or something. What do u think?
07-15-2007, 12:07 AM
Yay, my blessings count!
I actually prefer the original sketch, the tighter perspective helps you to focus more on the scout (where the story lies) rather than just the army in general. Plus it has my favorite color scheme, very well balanced indeed!
07-29-2007, 02:19 AM
Hi all! Long time no post :) First I'd like to thank you for voting on color scheme, I decided to go with the blue/pink one, placed in the snow environment.
But from my latest update thats not yet clearly seen coz right now Im doing a tone scheme, to place light and dark object as much correct as I can. And ofcors here are first character designs.
For character poses I used references that I made in Poser6, so its more believable as if I would go drawing them out of my head.
Im wondering what u think so far...
Best regards to all!
I love the concept, and I love they way it's developing.
The contrast is great and the flow of lines gives the whole pic movement and life.
07-29-2007, 04:27 AM
great composition and strong color pallete for all the three, its rather hard to choose coz all of them appeals to me.i like the wide screen format too:thumbsup: keep it coming blaz,
Awesome stuff! Love the long composition. Great work!
07-29-2007, 06:20 AM
hi i really love the idea and the speed paintings are bloody fantastic. i do not envy you though as i think it will be ahrd to portray the humour in the piece that they are lost. it might seem that they are merely taking a break and the leaders planning there next course of action. maybe a few scratching their heads might do it, but i am sure you have something in mind ..cant wait for the next update.
07-29-2007, 09:05 AM
Thank u for ur replies! Yes, I agree its a hard task in front of me. It should be more charicature than realistic painting and I'll try to manage that. There will be skeletons that will be freezing and that have enough of this journey, some of them will be scratching their heads, some of them will even have fun and making snowman etc... but it will have to be more in cartoonish style, especially their faces. I hope I'll manage to do that. Many thanks again!
07-29-2007, 10:58 AM
making snow man is a great idea.. yeah will ahve to be a bit comical style i agree
07-29-2007, 09:52 PM
so here are some more defined characters... and a penguin, scaring a small dwarf warrior. When I finish with defining background as well, than I'll put more time into caricatures of their faces to make image more comic like.
07-31-2007, 09:06 AM
some changes that I made, thanks to my coworkers :) now generals of the army of darkness r asking for directions a few penguins that really dont have any clue whats going on, but anyway they r trying to help at their best :)
07-31-2007, 09:14 AM
Now Im wondering if the image isnt too unconnected or whats the right expression. Is there too many characters that crash the image on too many pieces to work as a whole? Im also asking myself if the composition works... or was I carried away in a painting process... hmmm :/
07-31-2007, 09:28 AM
Oh, my sweet & sunny Jeezus  You're off to one seriously good start. Try shuffling the zombies around that surround the map; if you can get more of the penguins' silhouettes, they'll have a stronger presence in the image. (particularly the penguin who's pointing at the Horde with he fin.)
I dunno what else I could suggest. This is amazing already; I can only imagine how much more awesome it'll be finished!
07-31-2007, 09:41 AM
lol I love everything you've added there, this is turning out really funny man, penguins and the snowman action on the bg are working greatly, gotta say you are really benefiting from this format you chose, you're showing a lot of stuff with no chaos in my eyes.. i personally love the composition, and the lighting, less contrast is working beautifully on the darker left side. I'd just try to get the characters on the left side of the canvas as funny looking as the ones on the right side I guess, but it's still at a very early stage and it's great job man!
07-31-2007, 09:50 AM
Love it! the picture looks so epic as your eye scans acorss it and then..PENGUINS! lol
very nice indeed.
is the final peice going to be in Black and White? or are you going to add colour?
07-31-2007, 10:00 AM
Many thanks to all of u!
chrisbeaver: I was thinking to add more penguins yea, maybe far back in the background, maybe one of them will be also mixed with the crowd on the right side.. donno yet, gotta try :) Thnx for stoping by and giving a positive feedback!
Jeffparadox: yea, that would be really good, to make them more funny. That will be my next task. thnx!
Layer01: no, the final will be fully colored, check the previous posts to see the color scheme. Thnx for ur comment!
07-31-2007, 10:26 AM
this is now very clear as t whats happening.. loving it
07-31-2007, 10:43 AM
I realy like the concept of this and your sketching stye, great progress and choice of characters.
07-31-2007, 01:09 PM
ah yes, i hadn't seen the colour scheme. It looks brilliant btw, the style you've used is so elegant and loose, i love it.
What will your working method be? will you redo the work from skratch once you get the b/w picture done, or will you somehow colour over/under the b/w ?
07-31-2007, 02:49 PM
Really loving your concept, really made me chuckle. The character development is spot on I think and also like whats going on in the background. Great work look forward to further developments.
07-31-2007, 03:37 PM
hey very nice update. I like your concept a lot. Great characters and a special format. Great job with the lighting, focus of the maincharacters with the map, and the other guys keep in the darkness. best regards Diego
07-31-2007, 03:54 PM
Hey this looks great so far. I love the idea and the composition. Good luck. Can't wait to see it finished.
07-31-2007, 10:35 PM
Wooow Blaz!Totally digging it!Love those pingouins and snowman and all.ME ronfllll very much by seeing your image!:D:D:D
Lovely style also again!
Me I feel ok with the composition.I think the colors will decide if the image will be too busy or not.Knowing your skills I say"not"!!!
Maybe havin just a hand or a part of a warrior really near us on the foreground on one side of the pic could bring in even more depth.Just suggestion ofcourse.
Hi there,NICE COMPOSITION as always. You know very wel what to do.Good luck to you,I will join later the 2d challenge right now I m in the animation challenge.
I really like the composition and theme, your painting is of great class :) Just one thought about the agressiveness, some of the caracters may look a little bit to forwardmoving in the back, almost as if they are storming past the general sitting in front. Or just posing, Maybe if they would have a little bit more of a stationary feeling about them? (never thought id say that about a painting :P) or anger combined with confusion pherhaps?
Keep it up! will have a look out for this thread!
08-02-2007, 12:09 AM
so here is first color test with sample background... Im quite happy with the right side of the image, while the left side needs more work on colors. Thnx to all of u for the comments, I'll reply tomorrow when I'll get some sleep :)
08-02-2007, 12:53 AM
you've a great way of working, the splashes of colour on top of the original b+w sketch are really bringing it to life, looking forward to seeing this progressing.
08-02-2007, 07:00 AM
These colors are hot!
08-02-2007, 01:43 PM
Hey thats a good one there! The idea is really funny. Love the composition and the colors . Penguins!! :)
Cant wait to see the final piece, ambiance looks good!
Good luck, cheers.
08-04-2007, 11:56 AM
Hi, laughed when I saw the outer thumbnail and i love it so much I actually bothered to login to tell you this. I think the idea will be further accentuated if we could see some of the undead standing around impatiently, eg. hands on the waist, tapping of feet.
Also something to consider.. the three skeleton warriors don't seem to be very leaderlike compared with the rest of the horde. But if they're supposed to be typical minions, would it be better to have a few more similiar looking skeles in the background cos right now, I was a little confused if the horde is actually coming after the three, or part of the three, although in the end i'd still believe they were WITH the three skeletons..
cheers and good luck
08-04-2007, 03:00 PM
a wid variety of colours there but they work really well to focus on the point of action.. this is going to be great... i honestly would be surprised if this wasnt one of the winning pieces
08-04-2007, 10:06 PM
Warriors of apocalypse getting lost in Antarctic? This one is hilarious! First I haven't even noticed what is happening in the middle... This one is interesting for sure: like getting ur past style and the new one in one work.
Wish u luck on this one!
Hi NinjaA55N ! Colors it's beautiful!
08-05-2007, 03:35 PM
handlebar: thank u very much!
Layer01: thnx for another reply! As u can see no, I used some color and overlay layers to colorize the image, than put some more normal layers on top of it and started over painting details and making more defined shapes. Its the method that Im using lately.
nimitta: thnx! I'll try to bring those character designs even a bit further. I hope u'll lake them then as well.
zweiDee: Im glad u like it :) thnx!
OKMER: hey buddy! thnx for stoping by! Im glad u like it and the comment about puting something way in a first plan is awesome. Will think about what puting where. Thnx!
adib: hey, thnx! Cant wait to see uur entry for 2d!
Ligo: thnx for sharing ur concerns. I see ur point and will see how it will work later in the process, if I could change that for the better. Thnx for stoping by!
shamhead: thnx! Im glad u like it :)
Jeffparadox: I'll try to keep them to the end of the process! thnx :)
ponchik: thnx! yea, penguins, hehe...
taste: I'll try to portray as much emotions to the characters as possible during the next stages of development. For now they r more or less just quick figures to place the composition down. And thnx for ur thought on colors. I'll try puting some more red to the left side and some more dark costumes to those three on the right... hoping to keep the variety of colors vivid. thnx!
W-I-L: huh! thats an honor to hear! I hope that would like colors of my next step as well, while I'll put some more of them into the image. stay close and thnx for stoping by!
izisilver: Everything will be be more polished at the end ofcors so I hope at that time the whole image will be clear to read... and its nice to see u around! thnx!
Smik: thank u!
08-05-2007, 03:40 PM
so here Im testing smoke/fog of darkness to connect those characters a bit together, to make the image a bit more balanced with colors on right and left side and to implement the army with some sort of evil touch. I hope it works???
08-05-2007, 06:29 PM
Lovely sketches Blaz! Looking really interesting!
08-07-2007, 04:44 PM
Lovely colors dude! Your getting awesome! I love what your doing. Keep going.
08-07-2007, 11:44 PM
blocking in first details (some characters and a background), some slight changes on a color scheme and thats it... much fun :)
Thnx also to Bobby and Bryce for encouraging words! Much appreciate it :)
08-08-2007, 12:51 AM
haha cool concept and idea mate, go for it!:)
08-08-2007, 04:49 AM
ouch! formidable. :bounce:
08-09-2007, 02:01 AM
You have a beautiful piece, from color to composition, just beautiful. For now, I just think that your focal point still too mix up with the background. However, I guess it will be resolved with the progress of the painting. Best of luck man.
08-09-2007, 04:26 PM
Just came to take a little peek at what's up. As I see your painting is doing very nice . The idea is great and i hope that you can pull out its strong points as much as possible.
The right side of the painting looks fantastic (love the penguins :)) as for the left side I'd do it a little differently ... I know you still have a long way to go, but if I were you I'd try to make the horde look a bit more comical.
I'd divide them into 3 groups: complaining (like old ladies talking about sth), phlegmatic (someone lighting a smoke or sleeping) and some some trying to pass the time (like snowman that you have, maybe some pranks, wedgies). All of these activities are strange behavior for a stereotypical skeletor. haha :scream:
hope i helped
best of luck
08-12-2007, 01:21 PM
awesome choice of colours buddy!
how about adding mist or smthin to show that its really cold out there? .. ( not quite sure wat to call it ... but wen its really really cold u c them a lot .. correct me if wrong :p )
great going man! waiting to c more! :p
08-12-2007, 10:35 PM
Submitted image is just a preview coz its too big for uplouding. So here is attached a full res to show u some of the process. Nothing special yet, although I remove the dwarf character and replaced him with one in the first plan, coz I though it works better as a whole now. Thnx for the tip on the fog, I was planing to use that at the end, when all the details will be blocked in and there wont be any fear of loosing or overpainting something. thnx for the replies!
08-12-2007, 10:38 PM
oh, and I forgot to say... there r some heads missing :) still try to find out that funy style, to make them more comic like and with lots of expression. The skull guy at the right side is just some quick playing, but not the final... he doesnt look at all how I imagine it :/ back to the drawing board!
08-12-2007, 11:22 PM
Rockin' concept and painting. Great work!
love it so far ... the execution is really really good... i admire your brushwork there :D
08-13-2007, 06:22 PM
Really nice strokes here!..and your pallet choice turns out superb!..Cheers!
MY STRANGE BEHAVIOR ENTRY (ILLUSTRATION)
08-13-2007, 08:57 PM
This is looking really nice, Blaz!
One thing to think about is that some of the penguis are gettign a bit lots sitting up against the dark-colored ghouls. Maybe the right-most penguin can be moved a bit to the right, so that it's silhouette is reading more against the snow between the boot and the skirt than the skeleton's boot itself?
And what if the third skeleton from the right hada red skirt instead of a black one, so that the penguin in front of him was in front of red, not black, and so we could see its' shape better? And, of course, there's the good ol' rim lighting, which always helps, too!
anyhow, just some thoughts... good luck!
08-14-2007, 02:42 PM
dude! this piece really has potential! a very light moment. You are doing this as a 2d illustration, right? Your edgy style really does contrast with the situation quite well! great stuff!
08-14-2007, 04:09 PM
Wonderfull pic, with a incredible miscallenous of color, very good job
08-14-2007, 10:32 PM
Absolutely stunning image developing here. Your technique is fantastic.
08-15-2007, 01:29 AM
love it so far ... the execution is really really good... i admire your brushwork there :D
Just the same!!!
HEy and what about one of those ghouls using a broken magnifying glass to try to read the map..huhu..
08-15-2007, 11:37 PM
thnx to everyone for the feedback so far. I'll write replies tomorrow, here is just another update in my painting. Faces are all erased coz I still didnt decided about their style yet. Best to all!
blaz your work is always soo super i cant help but give you props and sit back and enjoy. i just wish you updated more :)
08-16-2007, 08:39 AM
I think you should punch out that penguin more. I think that would help with identifying what that shape is against that boot. wash out the boot and the ground a bit to punch him out. Nice vibrant colors Blaz! I love you, hehe! Jk!
Superb ! Amazing palette ! Your painting technique is wonderful ! Okmer's idea about the magnifying glass is funny but why don't you try a compass too ?
Waiting for your next update
08-17-2007, 01:16 AM
Hey Blaz just wanted to say your progress looks fantastic! I like the decisions you've made about the characters on the left. I think I'd lift the FG character's head a bit and put his right index finger to his lips in a dumb way :D Poped into my head as soon as I saw that dude. anyway, waiting for more...
08-17-2007, 11:29 AM
Finally I found some time to comment back..
Gord-MacDonald, easydoesit: thnx! I'll try to keep it up.
Vahn, idyeaah: thnx buddy, the brushwork is giving me some hard time though... wanna to keep it juicy and rough.
walrus, beelow: hey there my friend! So nice of u to stop by. Im aware of penguins, they need to stand out more, so I painted the skirt red as u suggested, it will help for sure. About the right penguin, there r still some possibilities where to put him, so I'll look into that next. But I dont want them to look plastic as they do now, I want them to be rough painted as much as possible, so they will get some additional layers of color over them and that could help them pop out as well.. We'll see :) thnx!
bluemattersoda: thnx for very kind words! yes, thsi will stay in 2d for sure :)
MDN67: thank u mate! This time it will be all about colors.
OKMER, bouboul: thnx for stoping by! The idea of one of the skeleton holding something in his hands is awesome, I'll sure put something there, just dont know what yet. Maybe compas yea, and the background penguin is trying to understand whats happening... coz honestly, non of these penguins have any clue whats going on... they r just playing smart :)
Slav: it is so nice to hear that from someone that I admire as well! thnx, it means a lot!
Jeffparadox: hehe, nice idea. I was thinking about something similar, but than I realize that he is not the main character or even point of interest in the image, so he should be very subtile and just for the matter of composition, nothin more. Thnx for stoping by!
08-17-2007, 06:01 PM
wow! amazing work!
08-22-2007, 06:10 PM
Holy cow blaz this piece is just mindblowing, the colours are so vivid my eyes pop out.
08-24-2007, 02:53 AM
Your work is amazing, your technique, the colours, but the part I love best and it makes me chuckle everytime I look at it, is the way in which you treated the penguin giving directions in the lastest update. He has just the right lean to him with his wing pointed showing the direction I can just imagine the conversation going on.
I'm looking forward to following the progress on this one,
08-24-2007, 08:13 PM
Hi Blaz, thatīs awesome. I like your idea, you entry is my favorite in this challenge. good luck:thumbsup:
08-25-2007, 09:53 AM
 Great work as always Blaz and sorry I've not had a chance to add to this thread until now.
Love the concept and the colours are really something - love the contrast between golds and reds and blue shadows.
No crits at the moment
08-25-2007, 03:48 PM
brillient choice of colors and an awesome composition.. and the humor of this pice is so awesome!! i mean its hillarious!... way to go mate!!... keep up the good works.!
08-26-2007, 02:22 PM
Looking better by the day. Lucky you are, buddy. You have got skills and tallent. Hope to see it finished shortly...
08-26-2007, 11:33 PM
Today I had some time to work a bit more on my piece. Faces are starting to show up, there r some stupid looking penguins, several skull faces and a snowman in the back. I also added several penguins in the back on the right side of the image, to balance the composition and close the view... they r still in a sketch phase, as many other things that need to be detailed. Hope u like it.

It looks class, the new changes are definatly improvements. If I was to offer any advice I think in terms of narrative its important that you dont make it look like the army is charging or the penguins are fleeing, as it looks pretty cut throat already (which is a good thing!) and you dont want the viewer to miss the important interaction.
great concept, I think it's very funny that some parts of their bodies (skeletons) are missing at this point... i think you should leave it that way... after all, they are the undead... they wouldn't miss a head or a hand... or two :P
keep it up, you're doing great!!! :applause:

hahaha. love the yawning skeleton..
08-28-2007, 02:16 AM
Such a cool illustration! It made me laugh, great stuff.
I love the use of colour and the detail is great.
It reminds me of something that Gary Larson from the Far Side comics would do (but his would have been a simple cartoon, not this great illustration).
Best of luck

Wonderful colours and cool idea! I like the way you contrast the grim characters with the happy palette. The shapes at the left side are a little hard to read at the moment, but maybe that's just because you haven't detailed that area yet. Anyway, great job!

Wooow this is just starting too work out so amazingly well;wooww m8!Me just enjoying the show so well!THe only tiny little point Ill say, but i know this will change, for me is the red clouds/mist down their feet, maybe needing a tiny bit of secondary colors in it.

I agree with that "charging army" especially the skeleton with the long word, looks like emerging from a battle.
Anyway fantastic work so far :applause:

A M A Z I N G !
09-05-2007, 11:53 PM
Slowly the image is getting together.. I changed the front character (not finished yet), coz the previous one looked flat and with him the whole image. With the new character I tried to bring more dynamic as well as pointed some composition lines back to the left side of the image (his head is turned to the left), so it somehow loses the weight of raiders breaching to the right. I hope my thoughts make sense, coz its quite late here and Im a bit tired :) Other than that, I also added a bird to the frozen characters head, arguing with one of the skeletons. Also mainly all back characters are now finished, apart from some last touches that will come at the end. More to come, hope u like the new version.
Best to all!
09-06-2007, 02:10 PM
baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (stares in awe as saliva drips down his cheek) ahm... wow i'm outta word... its most definitly one of my most favorite images in this challange!!... if i cud vote i wud definitly vote for u!!... gr8 work!!
09-14-2007, 01:33 PM
U know what's missing, surprise attack to break the monotony of the image, everybody is sitting around but by putting the arrow or something into the front character eye would spice things up. You could have penguins turn their heads to see what's the commotion.
Just a thought.
So funny and so awesome!
The red smoke really sells this piece.
09-15-2007, 05:16 PM
You know, hon, I learned a lot from you in the last fiew years.... but never do I manage to create such great brush work as you.
It looks great!
09-15-2007, 05:51 PM

09-15-2007, 07:31 PM
hey Ninja, looks like you`re doing a great job here; the colors are awesome and everything looks like done with much love
my only suggestion right now is that the front-guy looks a bit flat because it looks like I acn see through his eyes to the background
keep on the awesome work, we`re witing for an update
09-16-2007, 09:19 AM
Great Concept! The sketches and WIPs look really cool and the idea is definitely a winner. Great style, great colors.... just awsome...... basically what everyone else has been sayin
09-16-2007, 10:23 PM
its a wonderfull piece of art m8y i realy like the format that you have chousen to work these composition out and the color palete is great :bounce: i was goin to make a comment on that head that it was making the image flat and i'm glad that you figure it out and change it the new head looks way way way better....the pinguins are cool :)
09-16-2007, 10:27 PM
This is almost final piece... I'll go and sleep over it couple of times, to fresh my mind and see whats still missing.
I added many detail to this latest submission, some color changes here and there, pulled out some shapes, developed the smoke, and added textures overall the image.
Im still wondering what to put on the signpost, to add something to the story. Any help is much appreciated :)
something like that maybe..
and here is a bit bigger version for all detail freaks (as I am :) its about 25% of a whole image size.
09-17-2007, 10:32 AM
Excellent blaz. I love the colors and style.
For the signpost I don't know, maybe with less direction it will be clearer but I'm not sure.
09-17-2007, 10:45 AM
just excellent !
Great job, style and humor !
09-24-2007, 08:58 PM
Holy crap, that's good stuff!!! Your style is superb.
09-25-2007, 03:21 AM

I envy your techniqe... The progress is amaizing I love it so much! I hope you win ;)
09-27-2007, 05:34 AM
hey bro! where are ya?? is your final piece ready??
10-07-2007, 10:17 PM
Huh! Could this be it? I really hope so.. before I get bored working on it :) So, I added another face to one of the characters on the right (does it work well???), added some snowflakes here and there and breath coming out of skeletons mouths. Maybe something else but I cant remember, hehe... how does it look? I also tried tons of sign writings, but all came out cheesy, so I decided to make a strong image title and leave everything else be read from the image itself. I hope I succeeded. And ofcors one more close up version (25% of full size)
And now the almost forgoten story behind the image:
A fearful army of darkness realized they were lost on their deadly march, somewhere around South Pole, while they should be fighting a war against.. well, someone that is far far far away :) Having headless scouts it was inevitably at some point. After hours and hours waiting in bone freezing cold they decided it is better to hurt their pride a bit and ask someone for direction. And a penguin colony was the first that came by. The moment when they found out that they were 20.000 miles lost, is depicted in this image.
10-07-2007, 10:45 PM
And some 50% close ups..
GOODNESS man!! This is ridiculously BEAUTIFUL! Your color is so RICH! I LOVE it! Excellent work!
10-07-2007, 11:17 PM

10-08-2007, 10:37 AM
I just love your washy brush strokes! congrats man!!!
10-08-2007, 11:35 AM
congratulations from me too, you`ve one of the most unique and impressive pieces of this challenge
the small standard pic can`t capture the awesomness of your brushstrokes so thx for this 50% close ups, it`s a pleasure to watch
the skull face of this guy on the right is working, even I have to ask why the other two guys don`t have a face yet...but that`s not really disturbing, maybe they just don`t have a skull under their capes ;)
good luck for the contest and well done
10-08-2007, 05:26 PM

Hi Blaz, you are done! Man, congradulations, this piece simply wows the viewer.
Don't know how you manage to paint like that in digital, but I really admire your skills dude. your composition just works perfectly for this story, and never bothered me since you've decided on your final canvas format. Nothing to say about colors, getting all those beautiful hues in dead white snow would be really hard to achieve by someone else at this level; all of them are dancing throughout the canvas in great harmony. your story is very strange indeed, and one of the funniest ideas in the forum to me; you've done a great job in capturing those expressions.
though, these are things that most digital artists are able to achieve with tutorials and practice. what makes your paintings unique, is the oil-paint realism in your brush strokes, the canvas texture showing through the paint randomly here and there, and your ability to blend your characters tightly to their surroundings with your mark-making skills. That is the proof of an artist who knows how to observe and execute paint in essence, digital or traditional. Thanks for the hi-res images for the stroke-obsessed like me :D And thanks for this great image, which made this challenge more fun to participate.
Your style makes me want to get into painting like this, with heavy textures and strokes to discover for the viewer; instead of polishing everything and depending on objects for details, rather than strokes. Hope next time I'll have the courage... :D
Best of luck to you with the voting my friend...
10-08-2007, 09:10 PM
"huh, Im blushing... thanks for kind words but u sure want to have higher goals ;)"
LOL :scream: Well, I was only talking about your painting skills... ;) The problem with my style is, that I tend to make my art looking too crisp. I want to add more artistic strokes, and still keep my beloved details in the pictures. And I really think you do this to perfection
10-08-2007, 10:22 PM
Hi Blaz, Congratulations! Everything looks great, your technic, colors, details, all are superb. Viewer could find new details in every look, I love the snowman. Well, watching your progress was really great, from now on Good luck! Cheers!
10-08-2007, 11:51 PM
Just wanted to stop by and tell you that your work turned out fantastic! It's breathtaking - from composition over colors to rendering! All top notch, well worth the effort!
One of the strongest pieces by far!
10-09-2007, 03:43 AM

Impressive painting style.
10-09-2007, 06:33 AM

10-13-2007, 03:05 AM
Wow... this looks great. It is funny, cute, the colors are great and the atmosphere. I wish you best in this competition. I hope you will get some award. ;)
I will follow this thread. Just wondering is this near finished image or do you intend to do some more painting over it?
10-13-2007, 08:11 PM
huh, I almost forgot to write the story down under my final submission. Will do that shortly :) And thanx for another great response!
chile888 - thnx man!
Jeffparadox - whoooa what a long post! thnx for stoping on every single segment of the image and commenting it, I really appreciate it! Im not so skillful in traditional painting for what I really regret, but Im in love with those paintings and Im looking at them for hours, trying to understand the logic behind their raw, yet very elegant strokes and textures. For many years I polished my paintings but a teacher at school somehow opened my eyes to try searching for other aproaches as well. Nothing wrong with smooth and polished digital images though, I just realised that sometimes u tell more story with less details. Im still learning and its so much fun! Thnx again so much!
MartinNielsen - thnx :) sometimes it benefits if u paint over the line, rahter than stay inside, hahaha... like they were teacing us when we were jung :D it better blends with surroundings and u may get some lucky mistake strokes that live up the image.
ashiataka - hey there! yea, I tended to put some details here and there that player will notice on a second or even third time when he/she will be looking at the image. Thnx a lot for stoping by!
Hideyoshi - thank u! It means a lot coming from u!
cabertevon - thank u :)
Squibbit - hey, long time no hear! Where is ur piece huh!?? hehe
InTerceptoV - hehe, u missed the process, the image is final. I hope that doesnt mean it looks unfinished to u? and thanx for good thoughts!
10-13-2007, 08:26 PM
Congratz man! great job:thumbsup: I love it, you are my favorit from begin. Good luck in finale!
10-13-2007, 11:04 PM
wow you worked long on it, didnt you?
and how strange they behave.. kinda confused or despaired, huh?
10-15-2007, 03:44 PM
Haha cool !
wouldn't mind having that on the wall at all actually, top work :applause:
10-15-2007, 07:44 PM
Wonderful work! I really love how this turned out. What a fantastic blend of the creepy and the funny. It's still amusing to wrap my head around it, the mix of penguins with maps and all of the gory skullfaces, especially on the far left of the image. Looking at your first 2 close-ups, you'd be hard-pressed to tell this was a funny peice. But it is!
Oh, and I have to add that I really love the smoke curls everywhere - they're so stylish.
Now for one belated crit: you made one HUGE mistake...
You said these guys were marching around the North Pole. Penguins don't live at the North Pole (only Santa's Elves live there, as well as rapidly-becoming-extinct polar bears.) To quote from Wikipedia:
Penguins ... are a group of aquatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquatic_animal), flightless birds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flightless_bird) living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Hemisphere).
Change your write-up to "South Pole" and you're golden... Happy to help! :)
And thanks again for the paint-over in my thread. I still need to do more work on that guy's face, I still don't quite have it yet.
Anyhow, conrtas for finishing another great piece!
10-15-2007, 10:42 PM
Hmmm, maybe, it could be a little "strange" to have penguins in the north pole? After all they don't look like such good navigators either :D
10-23-2007, 12:47 PM
Hey Blaz amazing piece Congratulations
10-28-2007, 12:54 AM

10-28-2007, 07:38 PM
Superb! The story is great and is wonderfully done, so powerful image! And asking the penguins is so cool and funny hehe. Good luck!
11-11-2007, 10:35 PM
Congratulations on creating such an inspiring work! Would you mind describing some of the techniques used?
1) How did you create Photoshop brushes able to smear and show brush textures, like individual bristles?
2) What size was the pallet you were working on in Photoshop (for example X pixels by X pixels) and did you work at 100% resolution most of the time or only when adding details?
Thank you so much for sharing...I really find your choice of colors astonishingly beautiful.
Thank you for creating such inspiring artwork!
11-21-2007, 05:59 PM
