Thanks All,

My other title for this that I might go with is:

Best Two out of Three?

06-26-2007, 09:00 PM
hahahahah this idea is great!:D :D

06-27-2007, 01:06 AM
Thanks, think i might push this a bit more, and do some more concepting on the image, and do some rough models this week. Then save the rest of the ideas for doing maybe ... The animation or modeling category .... =) but will get this one done first.

06-27-2007, 01:53 AM
!! That rocks dude! The scale is sweet. I like that you used the squidy/madusa character, that guy is cool.

06-27-2007, 02:34 AM
The Scale is what i think helps sell it... though I am also toying with making the Rock Monster more of a Lava monster so that you have Fire vs Water... =)

The Green guy is sort of a Lovecraftian Chuthuluesque Creature. Which in mind also makes it a bit funnier with an elder one doing roshambo for the right to destroy the city... =)

This is my first batch of buildings, not all textured at this point will be doign that tomorrow. But I wanted to get some progress made tonight amist running around doing things...

I am going to be making serveral Buildings, texturing them and reusing them within the scene.

07-02-2007, 08:48 AM
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12552/12552_1183366125_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/12552/12552_1183366125_large.jpg)

UV unwrapped all the buildings, going to build textures for them tomorrow. These will be my base buildings that I will use multiples of, then I can throw in some variations on these to Change things around, It will also Help with setting the scale.

07-03-2007, 07:13 AM
nice buildings... i cant wait for the textured version... simple yet effective... and i guess there will be lots of these around so its good to think the polycount ahead of time...

07-03-2007, 07:56 AM
Nod, once I finish up the last of the Texture mapping I can Apply the texutres and resize here and there to give lots of variety to the buildings, I also made some signs that I will apply to the buildings. I spent most of the last weekend looking at skylines.

Since all the buildings of the same types it will allow me to see quickly what will need to change and how... Since I want a nice large City to contrast the monsters with, for scale, I really need to think ahead for my layouts.

Next step is to lay out the city (first Pass) and sketch in the monsters again to get the right size.

Some Homages that I am going to put in ;

a church for the Pastafarians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster)
Some Zeplins and Bi-planes (ala King Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Kong))
The Pryamid is my tribute to Shadowrun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun)/BladeRunner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner)(this being the 25th Ann. of BladeRunner.) Along with Paolo Soleri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Soleri) and Archologies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archology)
Billboards will be done in a 1930s-50s Style as well

I am starting to get a feel for the buildings at the moment, this is a concept to get a beter feel for the size of the buildings vs. the size of the monsters. Along with any other elements I might think of.

07-04-2007, 10:16 AM
you might be able to give it a greater sence of space if you use a camera closer to the ground level.. maybe a couple of characetrs in front of it.. just my thought

07-04-2007, 04:33 PM
Been thinking about it over the last day, and I might also try moving my Chthulhuesque creature into the water and chaging the perspective a bit more that way.

But yes Iced, I do think the angle needs to be more worm's eye that what it currently is. ALso adding people/ boats/cars other objects into the foreground is also a great suggestion. Thanks for reply!

Its been a bit since I have had any time at all to work on this project, I drafted this guy out based on the concept sketches that I was doing along with some inspiration from a previous model. I didn't worry too much about his feet since they wont be seen, but I still modeled them and made sure that they would work ok, just in case that I decided that he might need to show a part of the foot. I am going to take him into Zbrush to add more details and such later. For the moment I Like how he looks.

07-29-2007, 06:18 AM
Looking good so far, David! I like the concept. In your earlier sketches, this humanoid guy is a lot thicker. Was making his anatomy more human and less monsterous an intentional decision? I liked the thicker ones, and think if could be fin to really push his anatomy further by bulking him up more. He doesn't necessarily have to be fat - just think of The Maxx, or the Hulk, of the Thing... I think the Maxx is the best example, just because he's so comically bulky, yet it all reads like muscle. Anyhow, might be fun to push his silhouette futher. Good luck with it...!

07-29-2007, 06:40 AM
Thanks Mike,

I think I might Still Push the the shape around some more, Though What I wanted to get away from a bit was doing too much with just tubes. Think its his chest that may not be reading just right at the moment. Right now I am doing some Facial Blend shapes to rough out the Expressions. He is fairly low poly as all things go. Only 1600 Quads at the moment.

It may also be the T pose that I have him in at the moment. Once I have him rigged with at least a basic rig then I will know more.

Going to try and show off some of my rigging techniques while I am working on this guy. Going to have him finished before i head to siggraph next week.

Thinking about it, it might be intresting to add more bulk to him via BlendShapes, just to have the ability to graw and shrink his mass a bit.

07-30-2007, 08:54 AM
I think giving him a bigger belly (like he has in your sketch) will also help seperate his belly from his sternum and make it easier to read...

nice update.. keep it up

This is a pose test, I am still working with the materials, and texturing at the moment so those should not be considered final in any way.

after the last couple of comments I did give him a bit more of a belly/girth. Though I may wing up going back and reworking it some more. Will see when I have more time to work on it. The deformation seem to be working ok at the moment. =)

Just did a slightly higher quality render with the pose test. Becuase I felt like it =)

I also really tweaked some of the bones (rotated them more than they should) just to see how bad the deformations would be if they happened. As you can see, the reasults are not that bad at all. At somepoint soon I will be doing a proper texture and normal map for him, but at the moment time, I dont quite have the time.

Its been A while since I have done an updates here. I have not dropped out of this, just been rather busy as of the last couple months. I still have to texture him, and work on the weights. However without any weight painting he did smooth bind rather nicely. I do have to do some shoulder work on him though.

This image is starting to test hte size proportions of the creature to the buildings. I started rebuilding the city layout based on some street layouts from two sperate cities. This led to a far better feel for the city layout.

This is starting to get there but I am currently way not happy with this at the moment. It will be changing as I spend more and more time on it, correctly what I don't like.

This is a test of the Depth of Field, along with Checking some of my camera settings. The Lights are no where near finalized here, and I still need to make some texture changes and positioning changes...

I may be going back in and reworking the hand/ tentacles on the Water Creature so that I can get a better Rock hand gesture.

In general I am much happier with the buildings even though they are blured out due to the DoF, I will more than liekly ease up on the DOF so that people will be able to see more detail in the buildings.

This is starting to get to the point I want to at. Not quite there yet, i should be able to push it the last bit of the way in the next couple days.

Put in Bakcground and foreground objects. Goung to redo the lights and render out final in the next day.

In Monsterville it's not so uncommon to see two monsters doing battle over a part of the city. Here we have two Monsters using the classic Roshambo technique to see who has the right to destory this area of the City.

Monster battles have saved the city costs for demolition, that have been better put to use for arts and education.
