hi everyone. i need to emit particles that will then form into a certain word. i was thinking of using goals. i emit my particles from an emitter. then overtime key the goal attribute for it to move to the geometry text. when i do this my particles move to the vertices. how do i mmake it move to the surface of the text randomly?
help needed. thanks.

In addition to the keying thing you're using, add a goalU and goalV per particle attributes and place a ramp or a random function on both. Hope this may help.
You need to add extra field which might help you with this, for example uniform field to push them a bit away, or slow them down. Then on the particle creation, make them different mass, which will then add the randomness in how much field is influencing them.
Or just get brainbugz plugin. It's well worth the trouble of installing and it's amazing.
I only wish that autodesk would buy such a plugins from authors, and implement them in next version of maya...
