View Full Version : 2D Drawn Animation?
Awesome Possum 03-20-2003, 05:16 PM Ok, I am interested in learning everything and anything about 2D drawn animation. I have a background in 3D animation and computer graphics, but would like to explore drawn animation and practice my drawing skills. I don't know anything about how drawn animation is done, except that you use "cells" and then play those cells at a fast pace. Do any of you have any links to site where i can learn all about animation? Next fall i am going to go to college and major in Animation, and would like to get a head start on learning 2D animation because it actually seems to be stressed more than 3D animation to get the degree. Any suggestions/comments/ideas are welcome. I am totally open and wanting to learn. I think that traditional animation could be just as much fun if not more than doing it on the computer.
Thx for the help in advance.

Anything and everything you need to know about 2D animation can probably be found on Animation World Network (http://www.awn.com). Anything else, just PM me ... I studied animation in school.
FYI - I don't think cells and cell painting are being used as much anymore. Most animation is computer colored now.

In the school that I am going to be attending they require you to start with 2d before 3d. I am very excited! It is unfortunate that it has lost its popularity of late.

Yep yep, PM me as well, Studied at VFS in classical animation working a lot with USanimation which as Kirt mentioned is how most animation is painted nowadays, on the computer. Simpsons and King of the Hill are the last two I am familiar with in American OPublic TV animaiton that still uses painted cels. Most places still use paper cels for animating, though Flash Toonboom are becoming popular alternatives, though nothing in comparison IMO, and now there is PlasticAnimationPaper which is a program not for painting animation but strictly for drawing, its interesting but needs a lot of work before I'd convert.
