morning ...

playing around with the scatter object i came over a bug (well at least i believe it's a bug) ... shouldn't the pivot points of the scattered object align on the surface of the distribution object? well they don't ... and i really hate that!

Is there a way to solve this? maybe a little trick ;-) or a script or i don't know what.

thanks for the support ... i like this forum!

I think checking the 'perpendicular' tab fixes that most of time. Not sure about the exact name right this sec I don't have Max open, but I remember that helping out the last time I used scatter a few days back. If there is a script out there that fixes this tho or other things I'd love to see it... hope that helps

it works fine with scatter, i use it a lot (you can also change the pivot of the scattered object)

but this doesn't work all to well with pArray, which is a real shame, pArray is a great tool to create complex trees in a short amount of time, i like it a lot

What could be an alternative to scatter would be to use the shaghair plugin with instanced objects for I know it can align on normals, tough, if I remember well, shaghair won't let you play with your objects individually, meaning that it'll be impossible to apply a specific material on each object ( as I want to do now).

Checking the perpendicular tab hasn't worked for me, neither after playin with the pivot point, editing the normals, rotating my source objet in the scatter, nothing works, some objects seems to have the right alignment, others don't.

If anyone has a clue about this....

Meanwhile I'll hunt for a suitable script. ;)

You may also want to try Pete Watje's scatter utility

It seems to deal with pivots better. I've definately found the scatter compound object to have some issues with aligning pivots in some situations, so you're not alone.
