This is for a WWII dog-fight animation I'm working on. Deadline for delivery (uni work) is in 10 days.

I need more processing power!!!

One thing that jumps out at me, is that your plane hasno pilot!

However, as far as the environment goes, I'd say it needs a bit more depth - as it is, that could easily just be a matte painting - try putting some flat poly planes here and there, with some kind of opacity mapped clouds on and it will hep greatly as your plane can fly through them.

Also, I'd maybe have a look at the shaders on your plane - they all look a bit flat to me, but all in all i think its a good start.

Yeah I'm still working on the pilot :)

The clouds here are volumetric, and somewhat render intensive. I'm finalizing them now so that I can render out transparency textures for planes, as you say.

Some of the clouds will be all volumetric with the planes going over and under them, with the camera moving with the planes.

Here's another. This is how the final animation wil look, more or less.

Forward most clouds are volumetric (and a bit heavy, but no too bad. The middle and background clouds are images on planes.

I've still to add a pilot (doh!), and the texture for the P-51D needs to be tweaked and entirely changed for one of the planes. (Well some of the coloration will be changed anyway).

This is the opening beta-shot btw.

Yup, basically all the clouds are originally the same intensity. Why? You think I need to pump it up a bit?

basically i think everything looks a bit too sharp - maybe by putting some mor eintense fog into the scene you can give the impression that it's a bit more hazy....

There is now, I just hadn't finalized the P-51 when I rendered these.
