Hi

I've been working on this piece for quite some time now. It's for a school course (3d-modelling 1 - it's a basic course). This is the first project I've seen all the way through, I usually just make quick doodles and don't even bother texturing them.

The head and eyes were modelled in Wings (there is no body  ). I painted the textures in PS LE2 with my trusty wacom (they're the first textures I've ever painted).
The hair was done in Cinema 4D R7. The images were rendered in C4D.

I'd like to thank all the people who helped me along the way. The helpful individuals over at the official Wings development forum (especially betelguese) and the guys&gals at #cgtalk.

This is the image I'll most propably submit to my teacher

I also rendered from 2 additional views, you can see them here

if i stik to the techniques: the piece is good but the texture .... kinda sucks.
i think u should work harder.

if i talk about the goal: hmm u wanted to model an indian, right? well they have more asian traits than caucazian ones. the skin is bad c'mod u never watched a cowboy movie?? they have wrinkles on their face and are more dark...
i think only his nose is allright.... the rest...

all in all

ps: the hair looks silly.

silv: maybe he was just going for a white guy with a mowhawk. :)

the hair looks a little funny but the head is perfect!

The modelling is okay, although it could be improved a lot in some areas - such sa the ear, and the actual overall shape of the head, which seems little squashed, in my opinion :)

The textures are way too plain. Human skin doesn't look like that at all - you need to incorporate a lot more tones into those textures to make it more lifelike, as well as things like blemishes and spots, which ALL faces have. However, since they are your first textures ever, you are excused :p

Next time round, you should try incorporating texture maps for properties like spec, gloss and bump as well, to give the skin more definition and realism :)

On a different note, you should really lose the background. You shouldn't always feel obliged to put a background in your renders - a simple flat colour can work too. And in this case, those clouds really don't look right. I think you will do better to use a flat colour when you hand it in to your teacher ;)

Hope this doesn't seem to harsh

Seriously Jide. watch a friggin' cowboy movie or something.

lol just kidding i think it looks pretty good. you should try to make his mohawk look a little messy or something:p but thats my only complaint.

Thanks for the replies guys (and Leigh :D )

I'm aware of most of the things you brought up but like I said I need to move on.
I learned a lot and hopefully this will show in the next model I do.

I hate to play the "it's my first time" card but I have no other excuse
Hopefully I'll manage to get together enough cash to buy C4D for home so I don't have to go to school to render and stuff.

Oh, I just must make it clear that I have painted a spec map and a bump map but the effect isn't that visible at this resolution. I could crank the bump up some but then you'd see the sub-par bump map :hmm:

Maybe I'll do one more render with a flat background and a tweaked skin material.

Which view of these three would you guys prefer, or a totally new perspective?

the ear looks a bit too flat... and well for a first effort, it's good.
