first off, you need some sort of environment to reflect. It's usually been my experience that HDRI's dont make good backgrounds normally (due to the increase/decrease of exposure). I'm not sure if Max supports HDRI maps even with blur's plugin since I use Vray. But here's the link to Blur's free HDRI bitmap plugin

just a little FYI:

the HDRI import/export plugin isnt made by Blur but by Splutterfish. Splutterfish is not owned/setup by Blur.

I've faked it with a sphere before.
Make it big, flip the normals, and make it non-renderable.
I don't know the pros and cons, but it seems decent enough for some applications.

Hmm.. is it just me, or does there seem to be no difference in the glass between the two images?
