Hi!

Here's some screengrabs strait from the Maya viewport, showing some different views of a character I'm working on.
I'm planning on adding pants and a jacket soon. The problem is
to find time to work on this character, I'm quite busy at work these days...

I'm glad you guys like it:)

I Think I'll start texturing the head soon, might do some tweeks
on the hole in the backhead first, and perhaps add some weins.
I'm not looking forward to uv map this bastard though!

Wow thats great, I am a huge fan of night of the living dead franchise. this is super cool, can you give any insights into your construction methods. thanks. Ever read the story by Stephen King called Homecoming.

EEEK!!!

this is soo cool. I love zombies. I still want to make a realtime zombie sometime....

Can't wait to see it textured... :bounce:

Jan Svalland
03-20-2003, 06:42 PM
chudofsinister: Thanx. I'm modeling the zombie using polygons.
I started with a box, blocked out the main shapes, then started adding details by mainly splitting polygons and moving vertices. The hardest part is to keep the mesh somewhat organized, when
a lot of details like wounds and damage has to be modeled into the mesh.

Here's a wireframe view (http://www.jsvalland.com/art/wip/zombie_wire.jpg)

Havn't read Homecoming, is it good?

chudofsinister
03-20-2003, 07:10 PM
Wow very cool wire. do you convert to sub-d to add more detail or just stay with pOlys. Homecoming is kinda cool, its a short story from Nightmares and Dreamscapes and was in a collection of short stories based around the George Romero Franchise where all the stories had to do with zombies. Nice work keep the updates acoming.

Jan Svalland
03-20-2003, 08:44 PM
I stay with polys. I'm planning on rendring this bastard with Mental Ray, and the current implementation of mental ray for maya doesn't support sub-d's.
I'll try to update on a regular basis :)

I think it is looking rather good! excellent detail, but personally, i would love to see MORE of those gory details, we want his hands to be rotten as well :p I love it!

This is great. The anatomy looks really good and you've added so much detail. Keep it up.

Elliotjnewman
03-20-2003, 11:36 PM
This is very very good. How long has this modelling taken you? are you going to animate it? and yes, I would be very afraid of texturing that! - time you bought deep paint me thinks! ouch.

Great work though, just dont apply a block colour for texturing... but I'm sure you already knew that!

congrats for this work jan
i especially love the arms and torso, very well done.:applause:
Can we also see some wire of this region ? ( torso and arms).

Very nice Gnarled face. Great detail on head. Looks like he got F**K'd up nice and good.

It would be nice to see some of that decay and messed up flesh more on the rest of the body maybe.
Looking very good so far tho.

03-21-2003, 04:07 PM
Thanx a lot for the positve responses everybody! It's really motivating!

I'm planning on adding more damage to the parts of his body that won't be covered with cloth. He's gonna have a jacked and
some pants, so I won't be adding unnecessary details to the arms and legs. I will defenitly add more damage to his hands.
The jacked will be open, so i might need some more stuff on the torso, not sure yet. A lot of details will be added in the texture process also.

Elliotjnewman: I'm not sure how much time I've spent on this model, i've been working on and off on it for quite a while, so the
progress has been quite slow.
The zombie will be animated, but not by me. I've got a co-worker on the case.:buttrock:

Here are a couple of wireframe shots, and a picture of the whole model

Hi!

I finally managed to get some more work done on my zombie prosject. Been quite a while since last update, but better late than never i guess :)

Anyway, I've done a lot of work on the shading, trying to remove the ugly "Lambert" look of the shading and adding some depth to it. I created a quick light-setup that will be more in line with what i'm aiming for in the final product. (might be too dark on some monitors)

http://www.jsvalland.com/zombie2.jpg

Btw, I'm going to the 3d-festival this week. Gonna rock big time!

Smoke_DT: The saliva is really simple, It's some deformed nurbs geometry with a highly specular and transparent material.

this was done using maya right? could you give us a uv unwrap and texturing tutorial on this?

ell.

Elliotjnewman
05-05-2003, 04:06 PM
oh and is this going to be animated too? it would be interesting to see how the mouth is going to move with that suliver... (if it is animated...)

Ell

Jan Svalland
05-05-2003, 05:36 PM
Thanks again for all your responses!

phoenix2k: the polycount is quite huge indeed, but it i'm afraid the details require it. I really want to add displacement mapping
also to the model, to detail it further, but Maya's displacement mapping isn't the best...But I'll do some more test when i get back from the 3d-festival.

ceql: Here's a small preview of the main maps, color, bump and specular color. They are very wip, and only look good from the current camera angle. I've used this angle to test what kinda direction I wanted to take with the texturing and shading, so that's why the textures only are detailed in one area :) The textures are also scaled down from 2048 x 2048 so a lot of details are lost..

color map (http://www.jsvalland.com/face_color.jpg)
bump map (http://www.jsvalland.com/face_bump.jpg)
specular color map (http://www.jsvalland.com/face_spec.jpg)

Elliotjnewman: I might do a uv/texture/shading tutorial from this project, but I feel i have to finish at least the zombie head first, right now everything is a bit half finished, so it's a bit hard to do a tutorial at this moment. :)
At the end the zombie will be animated yes, a lot of work ahead!

Your zombie looks GREAT so far! Very juicy. Do you plan to animate it at all? If so, I hope to see some animation tests here. I'm a big fan of zombies, but I'm sure you could tell that.

Do you plan to post more renders here? It's looking great. I love the details too... right down to the bloodshot eye. Very nice.

Got back from the 3d festival in denmark yesterday. It was an amazing event, and I met a lot of interesting people. I got really inspired, and was looking forward to continue with my zombie project.
But it turns out that it's gonna be hella busy at work the next 3 weeks, so no zombie-time for me. It's a shame since I got really inspired to do a lot of work on it. But I will of course continue to post updates as soon as I get some free time.

cheers!

Thanks again for your kind words :)

Raul: long time indeed. Things have been pretty crazy here the last 7-8 months, it really takes a lot of time and energy to start your own company. I need some vacation soon, hehe..

kpalazov: The shader is a standard maya Layered Shader, with different specular layers and a translucency-fake layer in order to add some depth to skin.

So far I havn't had any time for personal prosjects, so unfortunatly no zombie-updates yet..
