Welcome to the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art's Studio Sessions Program. We have structured the program to give you, the student, a more clear and concise sampling of classes, and to assist in creating a curriculum that is suited for you. These classes are perfect for the dedicated art student that is unable to attend our Full-time Atelier Program, but wants serious art instruction from our highly qualified faculty.

The Studio Sessions Program is geared toward the working arts professional, part-time student, and recreational artist. These classes are conveniently offered weekdays, weekends, and evenings to fit your busy schedule.
We offer beginner-to-advanced level classes to meet the requirements of virtually every student. Choose from the type of study you would like to pursue, be it Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Illustration and Workshops. Once you choose a category, the classes are listed in the order that LAAFA would suggest you take them.

Which class is right for me?

Within each category the courses are numbered in order of difficulty, the lower numbers being less advanced. For example, in the Drawing Section, Introduction to Drawing is #100, while Advanced Life Drawing is #160. This way you can determine the classes you should attend and in the order that will offer you maximum results. There are no pre-requisites for the Studio Sessions Program, so if you feel that you have surpassed certain classes, feel free to move along. If you would like assistance in determining which courses to take, we will gladly help you - with no obligation.

Instructor bios can be found at our website at http://www.laafa.org (http://www.laafa.org/)

Class description:

Dan Thompson's "Painting the Figure and Portrait from Life" workshop will focus on several problem areas for the contemporary figurative painter from life. Breaking the process of painting and drawing down into phases, rather than steps, and prioritizing the approach, the first theme will be seizing the energy and vitality of the model's pose. This will be followed by a strong push toward perceptual drawing and painting, and the search for a proportional, engaging pattern while forming the design elements. Implying structure in the shapes by challenging empirical knowledge with a theoretical form sense will expand the dialog toward a new principle. The structural aspects will be honed through a drawn or grisaille painted study of the human head. A portrait demonstration will also be conducted within the workshop. The light key, the harmony of color, will build on top of the previous phases, and thereafter emphasis will be placed on the long pose. Within this long pose, a "putting it all together" session will be developed in paint, charcoal or pencil. One on one discussions, as well as studio talks and critical feedback of each participant's work, will simultaneously take place.

"Great Art begins with a solid foundation. Build your foundation with us."

Best Wishes,

Matthew Marchant

Mission Statement for “The Axis of Art”

The Axis of Art is a satire, but it is rooted in definite seriousness. The definition of Axis is a “Principle line of development, movement, and direction. The Axis of Art is a call to action for the figurative art world.

Development: The Los Angeles Academy is dedicated to developing artists, well equipped for the challenges of being a visual communicator in today’s technological culture. We are developing the skills necessary to blossom in all fields of visual media and communication.

Movement: The figurative art revival movement is something we take seriously. Without solid art training all visual communication suffers. Figurative Art is the principle development tool for study. If one can truly understand and accurately depict the human form, they are able to apply it to any form. With fundamental training lacking in today’s art education arena, we are joining with a few other schools around the country, to bring it back to the forefront!

Direction: As we head into the future of Art in this country, we do so with great expectations! LAAFA is one of the schools still dedicated to fundamental academic traditions and we move forward in the direction of true artistic achievement!

LAAFA is developing resources for art students and we hope to have a fully operational Art resource center “The Axis of Art”, by the end of this year! So if you are looking to develop your skill set and be a part of the movement Join “The Axis of Art”.

1-day Seminar Methods & Materials of Oil Paints 8/22/09
Instructor: Steven Saitzyk
Sat., August 22, 10:00am-5:00pm

After more than 700 hundred years, oil painting is still the ultimate artist's medium. More than any other artist's medium, knowledge of its materials is the key to unlocking its vast potential for expression. Yet, little comprehensive information is readily available, and what is found is often confusing, contradictory, and even shrouded in mystery and secrecy. This one day intensive seminar on oil painting materials offers the kind of in-depth knowledge necessary to explore and tame this medium. It will cover pigments, the five types of oil paint, mediums, additives, thinners, and varnishes. It will also offer solutions to working safely as well as produce artwork that will last for generations.

1-Day Meditation for the Artist Seminar 11/21/09

Instructor: Steven Saitzyk
Sat., November 21st, 10am-5pm
$125

http://www.laafa.org/files/706.jpg

The creative process is inherently contemplative and naturally benefits from meditation. Meditation enhances not only the creative process but also the viewing process in specific ways—it helps to synchronize mind and body, right and left hemispheres of the brain, and our intuitive and intellectual abilities. The mindfulness and awareness practices found in meditation lead us to rest in our senses so we can glimpse things as they are and enjoy genuine spontaneity and pure, unselfconscious, expression. They also dissolve creative blockages and reveal the source of creativity and inspiration. This one day seminar will teach meditation and offer specific contemplative exercises and activities such as non-objective brush and ink painting designed to further awaken your creative and viewing processes. Instructor: Steven Saitzyk. Adjunct Professor of Humanities and Design Sciences, Art Center College of Design. International Director of Shambhala Art, a nonprofit arts education program designed to integrate meditation into the creative process. See: www.shambhalaart.org (http://www.shambhalaart.org). He has completed a Buddhist Seminary and has practiced and taught meditation internationally for more than thirty years.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ND38w83Eahg/S4hG2KbvtzI/AAAAAAAAAI4/-d03toxoWcg/s320/6003.jpg

This Free Instructed Class is for people who are new to LAAFA, and have never studied with us before (one free class per person). The free drawing class will encourage you to see with your eyes and to draw with your hand. Instruction will be given in simple shading, lighting, core shadows, and learning to draw through an object. This is an excellent opportunity for students with little to no formal drawing training at all. Learning to translate what you see to paper is an exercise that will challenge you in new ways, keeping your brain and your imagination piqued. Come give it a try!

Bring your 18x24 pad of newsprint, some charcoal, a graphite pencil, a kneaded eraser, your right brain, and enjoy a class on the house. Our hope is that you realize how important art can be in your life, for without it we merely exist.

More experienced artists can also benefit from one of these classes. Bring along your work, and during the class, our instructor will take some one-on-one time with you to give you a free portfolio review. Find out where you are with your skill level, and where you can go!

Marshall gives a series of concentrated lectures extracted from a semester-length DRAWING FROM THE MASTERS course. He focuses on the compositions of great masters and the principles behind all successful artistic forms, principles that have been basic to composing art from the beginning. The sessions will be creatively invigorating, so come prepared to learn.

Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres at the Norton Simon Museum! (Free admission for students with i.d) Free parking! 12pm-6pm.
http://www.nortonsimon.org/assets/images/exhibitions/Gaze.jpg

With close to 150 works culled from the Museum’s collections, Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres traces artistic engagements with the genre following Ingres’s influence in the early to mid-19th century. By displaying the portraits of Ingres’s contemporaries as well as those by Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, the exhibition examines why this type of painting, so seemingly laden with restrictions and expectations, appealed to some of the greatest avant-garde painters in the history of art. Continuing with the work of 20th-century masters such as Amedeo Modigliani, Oskar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, the focus turns toward radical variations on portraiture, showing how and why, given the complete destruction of representation as early as the 1910s, these great masters returned to the genre over and again

Enjoy!

1-Day Meditation for the Artist Seminar Sat, May 15, 2010, 10am-5pm at LAAFA!
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ND38w83Eahg/S7-hI8iexVI/AAAAAAAAARQ/PzrD6DSsXKI/s400/SteveSaitzyk.jpg

Animal Anatomy Workshop and Animal Drawing Class at LAAFA

#7100 – Marshall Vandruff 3-Day Animal Anatomy Workshop
Fri-Sun, Aug. 13-15, 2010, 10am-5pm

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ND38w83Eahg/TDPxekYCFYI/AAAAAAAAAjM/bPlKmudZS2w/s400/ForelegBonesIntro.jpg

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ND38w83Eahg/TDPxeJvu7QI/AAAAAAAAAjE/48sjbvW_JDM/s400/009AmericanLion_0002b_Comparison.jpg

This crash-course will teach you the classic approach to draftsmanship and animal anatomy. If you’ve ever wondered how drawing masters can depict a horse leaping or a bear dancing without copying photographs, these three days of intense instruction will take you through the process step-by-step. You will learn how to confidently draw animals from imagination as well as to interpret what you see when drawing from real animals. Those mysterious bumps on a lion’s limbs will make sense when you know the underlying structure. Marshall will compare various types of four-legged animals with humans, always with an emphasis on how to master “form in space” so they look realistic, alive, and authoritative.

Quotes from Former Students:

“You are one of the most engaging, informed instructors I've ever experienced. I learned volumes from the Animal Anatomy course. With joy and fond appreciation....”
—Ed Eyth, Former Senior Character Designer, Henson Studios

"I had the benefit of discovering Marshall Vandruff's teaching materials many years ago when I first set out to learn how to draw animals and fantasy creatures. Marshall was the first artist to really get me to think about drawing in three dimensions and I still refer to his work to this day! Marshall's teaching style is so wonderfully accessible in its direct and clear approach to drawing realistic animals by thinking around the forms and seeing them as dimensional objects on the page. He manages to break down complex ideas and shapes into easy to understand and easy to reproduce forms that have stuck with me for years and continue to guide my hand to this day."
- Scott Spencer, Character Designer, The Weta Workshop

Rey will be teaching Imaginatomy at LAAFA next quarter. The class will be focused on inventing and creating creatures using anatomical knowledge. This is a rare class that hasn't been offered in a while, so don't miss this opportunity!

Imaginatomy

A class created by Rey to augment entertainment and character designers by bringing in anatomy and mechanics into the thought process of character design… This class is designed for those who want to invent a completely imaginative animal or creature while keeping the same logic of human and animal anatomy. With Rey's excitement and deep knowledge of all things anatomical, he will guide you in first drawing, then sculpting a creature from your imagination that will make sense in terms of realism. Want to know how and why we are different from other animals, and why and how species evolve? Ask Rey.
