Has any one had a chance to check out
GNOMON WORKSHOP
INTRODUCTION TO ZBRUSH 3
Tools and Workflow with Meats Meier?

If so what did you think of it?

I havent seen it as it isnt available to the general public until monday, but just from looking at the topics it covers you can tell it covers alot more than the Digital Tutors DVD.

you can view a sample clip from this DVD here:

http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mme04.html

from the sample clip, I think it is very good:thumbsup: ... but then shipping cost is quite expensive, I mean $31USD for single disc to NZ..., I hopes they can offer download option with some reduce price...

I guess since zaplink and zmapper aren't available for z3 yet they won't be covered on the DVD.

Think I'll wait until Unleashing ZBrush by Matthew Yetter (aurick) is released. Can be pre-ordered from Amazon.

There are already some great tutorials for Z3 on ZBrushCentral.

Anyone know of a company that is Europe based that sells this DVD, so I don't have to pay the 30 bucks Gnomon wants to have it shipped to the UK ?

Finished 2 lessons already and it seems to me that this is a good training material for zBrush3 beginner.

The only problem I have with this DVD (and some other Gnomon DVDs) is that there is no project files included. Although I don't have much experience on Gnomon's product and don't go through all leesons yet but it worries me a little.

In my experience with the other Training DVDs, they all include the project files with the training materials and I don't know why Gnomon's product is different ? Anyone has any idea about this problem ?

Yeah the shipping prices over on Gnomonworkshop are pretty crazy when you're outside the US. They must be missing out on loads of potential sales due to people having to fork out their hard earned cash on shipping rather than the actual DVD's. :hmm:
Might be an idea to shoot a mail or pm to Alex Alvarez to urge him to get the full DVD sold digitally over on gnomonology (www.gnomonology.com) instead.

Have to agree on shipping cost's- I won't buy this if it's going to cost more to ship than the cost of the DVD. I'll go with digital tutors downloadable stuff instead.

The CGSociety store may stock it when it comes out. As they ship from Australia, the costs should be quite a bit less for us in NZ I think.

For the cheapskates like myself who don't like outrageous shipping costs to Europe, I came across this company - http://www.3dpowerstore.de/html.php/modul/HTMLPages/pid/52 that is selling the DVD for 48 Euros + 5.80 Euros for shipping. The site is German but the DVD titles are in English and when I spoke to them on the phone they were very helpful. You pay via Paypal too, which is nice and easy.

I also use 3ds Max and have many training DVD's and books for it. Around the first of the year I purchased the 3ds Max Fundamentals DVD from 3D Buzz. It is by far the most thorough training on Max that I have ever encountered. I thought it would be great if they would do one for ZBrush with the same approach and thoroughness. I posted a query on their forum to see if there was an interest for this. You can check the response on this thread:

just to update...

i bought a 'chapter' of the gnomon intro training as it became available as a download
from their new online download site..pretty good video.

i also have both ditigal tutors dvd's n zbrush 3 [not the maya based one..as i don't use maya]

additional:- ZAK over at 3dbuzz is currently producing a zbrush3 video training pack
and has estimated the videos to run out at least to 35 hours...sorta puts the 4 or 6 hours from digital tutors or gnomon well into the shade...found this out only tonight...should be shipping soon after siggraph.

so when the buzz vids ship they'll have EVERYTHING in by the looks of it including export
to maya, max , xsi as well as the soon to be released z mapper for zb3.

digital tutors intor dvd's

mini review:-

having just upgraded to z brush 3 and having never really done a thing with zb2 as i bought it just before zb3 came out [just in case zb3 was really bugggy...its not btw]

digital tutors intro dvd is pretty good and covers many areas in z brush 3 though not all
as you'd expect it's an introduction dvd so not 'be all end all'' dvd but has enough info
in it to get you up n running with most of the tools you'd like to know about..i think it's def worth the cash and helped me get to grips with zb3 as a new user.

most things are covered, 2d and 2.5d 'painting' is not what the dvd set out to teach you but
more of an intro for 3d sculpting which it does with a good degree of success...

being a fast release, just a few weeks after zb3 came out it's pretty good though as you'd expect there are things not covered like retopology, rigging, rendering..so it's not a
FULL intro course taking in all of zbrush and to be fair zbrush is a pretty large app to try and cover in 4+ hours of trainign and the delivery is proffessional and easy to understand.

the chapter i bought from the intro to zbrush from gnomon on retopology [filled a gap for me] show that the gnomon intro dvd is also a well crafted training video as well...not usre if i need to buy that as well but the ability to buy 'chapters' for download was a great bonus and was instant with no huge P+P that gnomon pack onto their dvd sales shipped to the u.k.....if they release the whole dvd for download i'd get it as it would save a considerable cost in shipping.

both are really good...the digital tutors sculpting techniques focusses on just that..iv;e just started to watch that and so for it look good.

I am however looking forward to the 3dbuzz dvd....i know they deliver great content as i have their fundamentals for 3dsmax and maya and the term 'fundamentals' really does no justice to what they teach you...it's like 2yr college course in max and a 2 year college course in maya....and only $99 each....bargin big time!...note the runtime of the
3dsmax dvd is 108 hours...like err 105 hours longer than the digital tutors dvd!
the maya dvd comes in at around 88 hours...

so the 3dbuzz disc on zbrush3 is said to be a minimum of 25hours...but there ''buzz hours''
no doubt it'll grow....maybe 50+ hours!....
the buzz dvd is not as i understand it a 'intro dvd'...it will go thru the basics but is aimed at more of a project/production style of training rather than that of:- 'this button does this' style of training....so much more depth and realworld production style training.

bottom line...

if your looking for intro training NOW...get either the digital tutors or gnomon...both look to be good...if you can wait [not sure how long...] then buzz will deliver THE zbrush
training.

hope that helps!

hi

hey any prospect of your whole dvd being available via download as the shipping cost is:-

Subtotal: $49.00 Shipping: $62.20 Tax: $0.00 Total: $111.20 Billing Information

to the u.k. making the postage cost MORE than your hard work...makes it VERY expensive.

additional..just spotted the 3-7 day option...brings the shipping down to $31...still not that cheap but will have a think and see if there's other stuff i can add to the order to mitigate the shipping somewhat....hey do i get my $6 back if i buy the dvd! [i bought the download chapter on retopology]
:)....only kidding!

Hi Cresshead -

Yeah, I hate that they are that much to ship to Europe. Bums me out.

I am going to put the rest of the chapters up on Gnomonology, It's really just a time issue for me now. I'm very focused on some projects that I'm working on and kind of have horse-blinds on right now...

Hey cresshead, why not get to know some of the americans living in UK. There are quite a few of us there and I spent a great deal of time in Cambridge and my wife and I did quite a bit of shopping in London. Try to hook up with some of the americans stationed at Lakenheath and Mildenhall or those working at the embassy. Shipping from the states to american servicemen and civil servants at these sites cost the same as one was living in the states.

Hello Meats,

I just received your DVD, cannot wait to get into it! Thanks so much, I have followed your work since the early days of Zbrush 2!

Nice to have a piece of your workflow and thinking to study!

cresshead,
Did you see the the tutorials by Rastaman on ZBrushCentral Topology, Topo-Rigging & more (Tutorials by Rastaman) in pdf format?

http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=46117

I wondered how it compared to your downloaded video.

Rastaman has some more tutorials on new features of ZBrush 3 in the ZBrush Tutorials Formum at ZBrushCentral.

I am dumb. That is all :)

Sorry to accuse you of threadjacking your own thread!

Erik Heyninck

I don't see what's wrong in comparing? When you're interested in buying, say, Beethoven's string quartets, you also compare versions. And the title of the thread is clearly about reviews, meaning comparison is 100% normal.

We are here to talk about ZBrush and I understand you're in a difficult position as you're not only forum-leader but also Gnomon artist-in-residence and author of the DVD, making it difficult not to mix things up.
But there's no harm done here. The thread is not "hijacked" when someone asks how the dvd compares, not with another dvd, but, by all means, with pdf's.

To me your reaction is such that, despite the respect I have for you as an artist, I will not buy the dvd anymore, nor movs by you when they appear at G.

So you think it's rude that I think that something is rude?

Now I'm not going to buy your dvd! I will hurt you by not learning from you!

whoa meats! you better take a look and see who started this thread

I have your Intro to Zbrush (2.5) and like it. I just can't afford to buy every title that becomes available. Comparing is the only way I know to winnow them down.

Meats, your DVD is top notch heavy course level strength, this-is-Zbrush. Be prepared you are going to be schooled in Zbrush with all the bells and whistles as if you were in studio with Meats himself.
