Real nice work mate, you did very well, this was an very well executed short on all aspects, liked the idea and the music too. There were some things that could br improved, texturing and rendering wise, but it is just minor to the emotion that is getting through. I also come from the NCCA, class '04. All the best man, take care :)

Hello Luke,
this film was the one single event that brought me to register with cgtalk. Althoug I regularly read the forum, there never was a reason for me to register. But this film was so strong that I just /had/ to register to tell you my feelings about it.
I had to watch it a couple of times already and share it with my wife. The two of us are overwhelmed by this film! All these little details are so strong, so emotional, so overwhelming!
The face is an extreme example that one does not have to have mudboxed faces, photorealism and all that to carry a message from the messenger to the recepient. It is the simple _expression_ on the face that shows deep emotions which urge to explode.
Then the atmosphere you create. The music is beatyfull and is the center point of the atmosphere you create in the movie. The way everything looks, the fact that you focus on the musician and his instruments, that you did not place him on a stage all creates an extreme dense, private and candid atmosphere which is clean from the daily struggles, the compromises and lies. Although the musician wears a mask, he seems to be much more truthfull and trustworthy than all the business people I have to work with in my day to day job.
And then the meaning of the film. For me this film is much more than a musician creating music. It is about giving yourself up for what you believe in. Creating something new and knowing that you have to give up every bit and piece of your self to create it. Nothing less than giving up your own life, your own self.
An absolut masterpiece. Thank you so much.
Yt,
Gunnar

Thanks man, I'm very glad it was of some inspiration to you. You surely passed the emotion a heck of a lot more than I did back then, I'm sure you are going to go far with this. I personally cooporated with a guy from Msc, Michael Bibby, who wrote this amazing script of transforming midi tracks into animated objects, the man even got the sustain and aftertouch pitch perfect!!! It was a great help for me.
All the best Luke, my name is Mike by the way ;)
P.S: You film is eternalised in my MOST INFLUENTIAL ANIMATION folder :) hehehe. Take care man...

Hi Mike. Michael Bibby taught us mel scripting in first year, his lectures were very good. This character is also animated using a Midi file. Only I wrote it in python not MEL.
Strange how the past repeats itself.
Thank you Gunnar. Your post means a lot to me. There is a story behind the character Istoirio which explains his reasons for his actions.

Great great stuff!
Good to see and hear that others are doing MIDI controlled animation.
I'm creating a program for performance of Live animation in a realtime engine as controlled by MIDI data, it looks as if there might actually be users for it when it's ready... :)
Good ending too...

The music was composed for this animation by Dominic Thompson (domthompson@yahoo.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/domthompson@yahoo.com)). Although the original idea was inspired by the works of Yann Tiersen and Ludovico Einaudi.

Graphic wise I am impressed, but this is clearly not the winning point of the animation. It's very good, but the emotional storytelling part of this piece of art is... superb. I am touched. It made me reply on these forums for the first time in years.
Respect.

Absolutely Wonderful. I was a Musician and still am in my heart and that moved me in so many ways. Yes it is just an animation but you captured some things that only people with a true passion know about. You are going places and wish you luck in all you do.
Now only if I could get off my butt and keep practicing with 3D, then I would be able to bring my dream thoughts to fruition.
