This was my final project at the Academy of Art University.

Its the opening sequence to a Sci-fi movie. Its called Anastasia.
The first two shots are projected matte paintings done by my friend Heather Abels (http://www.heatherabels.com). I modeled the buildings and she did the matte painting, projection and comping.

I modeled everything in the other shots, textured and lit them too. The rocket was textured by Rich Synder (http://www.richsnyder.com). The green screen elements were shot in HD and comped together using shake. I also did the particle sims and fluid sims in maya.

You can see the project at

Would love to get back some feed back !

Awesome work Eapen! Congrats! Didn't you also win first place at the AAU Spring Show for best VFX short?

This is fantastic work Praveen...one of the best student projects I have seen coming out of AAU in a loooooong ass time.

I wish you all the best for all your future endeavors!

Hm, I don't know. The opening shot of the cityscape looks quite OK.

But the rest is lacking a bit I'd say. The CG rocket doesn't really hold up against the live action footage, the lighting on the live action actors is really flat and also I don't get the story. The pilot comes in late and then they launch the rocket (from a downtown launch pad!) and that's it? Not exactly a great story plot.

I mean it is not a bad short animation. But it's nowhere near all those "perfect work!" comments before me in my oppinion. And to tell you the truth. If that one is the best work that has come out of the Academy of Arts I wouldn't want to spend some US$25.000 to study there.

Hey Praveen,

This is very good stuff indeed. I really like the opening shot.

Most of the student work that comes out of AAU is very impressive and commendable. It is by far one of the best institutes to study at, whether it is animation or Vfx.

Good luck with your job interviews. 5 stars from me.

Cheers,
Sushant

i thought it was made pretty clear that it is a student short film so why are you expecting ILM quality work? according to student quality, i think it is pretty darn professional, not to mention very ambitious.

it is an opening short sequence bro...don't expect an academy award winning story. and no offense, but i wouldn't spend USD 10.00 to go to Germany to study VFX at the Univ you're studying, I can tell ya that.

thanks! :)

I'm sorry if my post came across as offensive. It wasn't supposed to be. All I wanted to do is mention some points that could be improved in the animation in my oppinion as all the other posts resorted to "Wow that's just so great".

I think in order to improve your skills you need critisism. It doesn't help a bit to have praising posts only. Of course there is a lot of good stuff to this animation, but there are also aspects that could be improved.

I'm sorry again if the tone of my post was not the right one. That was not my intention.

By the way I liked my german university for what it is. It's not a VFX school and it doesn't claim to be one. It gives you a very broad understanding of media. I've got great 3d education at a high level (remember the "A Tale of Rock" header here on cgtalk?) in England.

no worries man, its all good. i just thought your comments were a little out of the line so I decided to call you on it.

yes, i agree that criticism is necessary, instead of blindly praising someone, but only as long as it is constructive.

anyways, i checked out your portfolio. you got pretty good work.

good luck at your university!

now, lets keep the focus in this thread where it belongs :)

cheers,

I agree that my initial post was out of the line and too harsh. Sorry for that again.

Thanks for checking out my work. You've got a killer pagedesign on your website

Incredible! Too bad about the sound, though. I would really like to see it with remastered, digital-dolby surrond sound... and Lasers too.

Thanks guys for all the feedback... i guess as they way you never finish a vfx shot.. you abandon it... there is still work to be done... but for the time being it will have to wait... :-)

Thanks again
