Hey guys. I have this idea for my new demo reel and I want to have a 3d character with a pencil drawn look. Anyone know of a render engine that would do the trick. Thanks.

I am not sure if this would work or not but maybe you could tweak it and not have to pay out $

Thanks for the link but it's not exactly what I am looking for, I have seen some animations that have a painted or hand drawn look to them even though they are in 3D and I don't know if that is something done in the package or in post. If anyone has anything else that would be great!

the only other thing I know of is the sketch shader from the SimbiontMax collection. It use to cost money but now is free.

anyway good luck

That is a lot closer to what I am looking for. Thanks Astral!

THAT'S IT!!!

And I have Brazil, now I just need to figure out how he did it. If anyone knows..... well, you know the rest.

i think i got it, but havent had anything really good to try it on. i tired it on some stupid cylinder with an extrusion.

anyways, make a brazil toon mat. set the shader to background. then under Ink > ink width map > make it gradient. then turn on the noise set it to turbulence. then in the toon mat, se the min size to .5 and max to 15. mess with the setting but i think this is how the effect is created, or one way at least.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the help drunkirishmic. I did a test last night on a character I already had built. Here is how it turned out.

there's a pencil shaded technique I wrote for 3dworld magazine on my site in the education section. might be of some use to you

Thanks everyone for your help. I am going with more of a look to match the flash cartoon I did of the character a few years ago. The pencil sketch technic isn't quite coming out the way I want. Here is what I am at now.

I think, if that's all you need...
(pretty simple toon look)

you can just use falloff material, I guess.

it's the fastest.

althought there are certain limits.;)

Well, my original concept had a painted or sketched character on a piece of paper come to life and have that 3d character have the same look and feel. Reyes NPR1 looks like it does what I need it to do, but I don't have any money so that is out of the question. I got some very good results from Brazils toon render, but sadly it looks bad in motion. I would keep on trying differnet things, but I need to be moving on in the project soon.

when you are using brazil....

if you set all those sample rates very high, I think you'll get some good looking results; however, the rendering time will be crazy.

:surprised
