View Full Version : Day for night shot of a city
Kutkin 06-20-2007, 08:42 PM Cheers!
I've recently finished another matte painting of a city in the evening. 7200 pixels wide.

The client gave me the original photo of the city at day time and I turned it to a night time. A day for night shot basically.
Here's the original photo:

Hope you guys like it.
Comments and crits appreciated.
cheers

Not bad....the only thing that annoys is the repetition of that 5 corner-star you used to create the lights...because of this the whole town looks like a big christmas tree :D (unless that was on purpose)

If you look at a longtime exposure of an photo, you will notice, that all lightstreaks are facing the same direction. Because there is only one lens that produces those streaks, it's a completely normal, physical thing.
So this kind of version is absolutely correct in therms of lightstreaks.

I like it a lot :) I almost wanna see something in the sky but I dunno...might throw off the balance of the picture. The colors look nice as well :)
How long did it take you to finish?

Those streaks are a natural camera phenomenon, if the lens was set to f22 the smaller aperture has a natural hexagon shape formed by the blades. the streaks are caused by the light striking the edge of the aperture and being bent outwards. All my long exposure photography has this effect. If you want to make it more severe get a sheet of plastic (cd cases work well for this) and scribe a grid pattern on it. Place this filter in front of the lens and you will see a star pattern formed. Bonus is you can rotate the plastic to get a better composition. This is good for shots of candles lamps etc..
Love this night scape

Thanks for the comments guys.
I was asked to do the first half (on the left) first at 7800 pixels. I did that in a little over two days (18 hours). Then after two days or so I was asked to take the first the first half of the image, scale it down and turn the second half of the panorama to night time. This whole panorama is 7200 pixels wide. I did the second part in two days. The whole process took less than a week.
I'm glad you like it.

Pavel,
This is very good. The sky might look better with a wee bit of stratus clouds in the distance on one side. I have to do a night scene of a sci-fi city. How did you get the lights to look like they are on in the buildings? Did you use the airbrush tool for the glowing lights?
I will probably be using a combination of PS and Painter. Any tips that might help me out would be appreciated.

Hi. Glad you like it. I was thinking about clouds too and I'm probably going to add some in there.
For the lights - I have cropped a light from a photo, brought darks to black and set to Screen. Then on new layer again on Screen I have airbrushed glow using dark quite saturated color (with the right hue corresponding to the lightsource).
I hope that makes sense and that it helps.

Had me fooled ... almost.
The only thing that gives it away is the fact that you told us what it actually is - a day for night shot.
Other than that the only thing that looks slightly off would be the lights' fall-off radius on the streets, and the shadows from the roof generators on the building in the left foreground.
The lights' lens flare effects look fine to me.
Good job !
( nice details with those car headlights ! - Also the sky looks fine to me as well )

Thanks for the crits.
I forgot about the shadows on the left side. I was trying to remove the shadows most of the shadows but I missed that part.
