View Full Version : Wacom Issue with Photoshop
ervine 06-20-2007, 09:38 AM Hi guys,
Something is wrong with my Wacom Ituos2 and it's driving me insane. Occassionally I get wobbly/wavy diagonal lines even if I draw with a ruler! The problem comes and goes and I can't seem to figure out what's causing it.
At first I thought it was because the tip was worn down, replaced it but still the same problem. Then I thought maybe the surface was worn down causing the pen to jump, replaced that and still the same!
I even thought there was something wrong with my hand!
Then I tried drawing lines with a ruler and true enough I got the wavy lines again! Only for diagonals though, horizontal and vertical lines are perfect.
I've included a pic illustrating what's wrong.

Will appreciate if anyone knows what's wrong.. I can't work like this and I can't afford to buy a new tablet either..
Thanks!

Wow, that's nuts, never seen something like that before, well that happens so often. Only thing I can think of, how new are your drivers? try getting an upgrade from the wacom website, maybe it will help.
does it do one of those things that when you are moving a constant speed on the wacom it is speeding up and slowing down on the screen?
To see if its the drivers or not, if you are on a pc, Ctrl Alt Del and bring up the task manager, go over to processes, look for "Tablet.exe" selected it and end the task, your going to need to unplug and plug your wacom back in, but see if this fixes the problem, if it doesn't, I'd really hate to think there is a problem with the wacom itself. Oh, and your wacom will react differently after you crash the Tablet.exe, it wont go one to one, it will go a portion of the screen for how far you move on the wacom.

Test with Opencanvas or other graphics program first, if the same happens could be because your tablet is too close to the monitor or something, drivers could also be a problem of course.

Okay guys did more testing,
The problem is universal across all applications, heck I can see it wobbling even when I move my cursor across my desktop!
The thing is, it comes and goes. Sometimes it's perfectly working, and one second later it goes all wobbly on me again!!
I already removed the old drivers and installed the new ones, didn't work. I tried stopping tablet.exe and my tablet just stopped working (why do I have 2 instancs of tablet.exe running?) Same thing happens when I use the tablet on my laptop.
OH! And the best part of it all is when I flip the pen over to the eraser side, everything works perfectly again!
Any ideas? Thanks!
Ervine
PS: I suspect that my pen is spoilt, does anyone know if I can use a Ituos3 pen on an Ituos2 tablet?

Almost 92.463% sure that you can use another pen from another wacom, it's the same technology pretty much. That is odd that the pen is messed, sorry to hear you are have such troubles with your tablet.

You can only use pen's from the same model, Intuos3 pen only work on Intuos3 tablet it will not work on a Intous2 or 1 tablet and vise-versa, it's a shame because I wouldn't have to buy multiple pens, that's how they getchya!

I read another thread on ConceptArt.org of people with the exact same problem, wobbly diagonal lines. They have attributed it to stray wireless signals, interference from CRTs (I use LCDs), connecting via HUB, etc etc etc..
I've basically tried everything,
- recalibration
- cleaning out old drivers with wacom's driver cleaner
- updating drivers
- connecting directly to comptuer instead of via USB hub
- adding a interference cleaner thing at the end of the USB cord
- standing 2m away from my computer
- turning off my wireless router
Nothing seems to work... sigh...
I don't want to buy another pen just to find out it's not the pen that's wonky... Can't borrow my friends ituos3 pen either... I guess I'm screwed...
This is a strange problem. I'd like to know what the cause and solution are.
What kind of system do you have? Is it a vendor model or a pieced together system?
One thing you haven't tried (at least it seems you haven't) is to update the chipset drivers for your mainboard.
Also is your tablet the only HID device you're using? Do you have another mouse or trackball connected? If so, try making straight lines with it (as best you can with a mouse anyway).
I assume that if you have a secondary mouse that it isn't wireless? Is your router the only wireless device?
Do you have a cordless phone nearby?
Is there anything close by your workspace that could cause interference? Such as a co-workers workspace? Do you live in an apartment where your neighbors could have some equipment close by but seperated by paper thin walls?
I know you tried relocating the USB port from a hub to a direct connect, but Wacom reccomends that you use a direct connection and not a hub in general.
I'd try updating your USB drivers on your mainboard though, just to rule it out.
Keep us posted.

Mine is a DIY-ed system from which the tablet has been working flawlessly for over 2years.
Updating the motherboard drivers + bios didn't help. No other wireless transmitting devices nearby that I can think of.
I'll try using a computer in a totally different location and see how it goes. I'm also going to try to roll back to older drivers instead.

Okay I have given up hope. I tried the wacom on 2 other comptuers at 2 different locations, all with the same results.
I guess I'm just screwed...
Contact Wacom. They are usually pretty generous with their time and may even offer you a deal or maybe some repair service. Sounds like you have a wonky tablet.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the advice but in the end I found out that it's the pen that's faulty. I went out and bought a new grip pen (thankfully they still have stock for the old intuos2 pen) and everything is back to normal.
Thanks!
Ervine.
