Title: Philosophia and Her Problems
Name: Robert Tiess
Country: USA
Software: Blender

"Philosophia and Her Problems" is my latest work in an ongoing series of related interpretive reflections on life.

The theme this time is philosophia, the love of wisdom that is philosophy, personified and symbolic.

Philosophy's "problems," be they seemingly irreducible dualities and dichotomies, questions of perception versus reality, questions without answers, attempts to define and resolve philosophical dilemmas, or something other, I find are interesting to consider.

Philosophia meditates: two states of awareness, eyes closed and eyes opened. What does she/can she see? Where do her thoughts take her/us? Have her/our questions been fully and properly framed, or do they lead her/us away from the truth within and around us? So many questions to ponder.

Some technical details:
This project was created and rendered in Blender 2.44 using the internal renderer.

Thank you for viewing my work,

Another nicely modelled and intricate piece. It seems a bit more symbolically ambitious than most of your previous works. The modelling on the heads is good, as well as on the swirly bits, and I like how the bottom head isn't noticed immediately (at least I didn't notice it immediately) because of the lighting.

My only criticism is that the brown colour makes it feel similar to the last image 'Indoctrination'. I think this is a lot better than that one though, as it makes better use of the image space.

Thanks, everyone!

Part of the idea of the "Philosopher's stone" guided me as for the color choice in this particular piece, whereas in "Indoctrination" the color choice there was partly based on the idea of "gilding."

There are three similar circular symbols (wearing seven lines each) in this that relate to internal wisdom, and they are fixed in a mind/body/soul sort of way down the center of the image, most noticeably in the upper head.

I have tried to make all the lines and curves purposeful and contributing to the meanings of the work, such as in the center, where the outline of a head of hair can be found.

What that particular symbol, like the rest, means is up to the viewer, but one example could be a search for true identity of the self (a faceless head) or an extinguishing of persona (mask) or something along the lines of nirvana.

While I enjoy creating many different styles of images, these particular kinds of works give me a chance to dig deeper into issues and ideas I find interesting and explore their visual/interpretive potential.

And then it's so exciting and rewarding to hear back from people around the world, so I really appreciate the responses!
