Ciao,
We have shoot some good footages and we do camera tracking, then model out everything we need for the short in Maya, including the environment proxy models. Finally, we composite via Shake then export the final film with Adobe Premiere. No sound effects, for demo sake, we add music.

i am actually working on the same thing! a sort of giant spider but not of any specific breed... just finished texturing and have been working on his rigging at the moment and plan to finish it by the end of this month...

so it's very refreshing to see a similar project in its completion! tho mine won't be comped in live footage... great work btw! had to watch it on the youtube version since your site seems to be getting some serious traffic right now...

Finally! LOL :-) it is true that you are not mistaken of what you perceived..
Actually, me and Oscar (co-worker) didn't got any satisfying or matching sound effects for the whole thing to reach a kind of dramatic scenario, you know like a comercial BMW tv ad for X5, funny switch on when the spider did the moves :) and so we end up finished with musics anyway.
