I like the link to this thread on macslash:
"Internet Inventor Joins Apple Board" :)

>>what the..... since when has Apple been open source (dont say darwin, that doesnt count)?

Why doesnt darwin count? It is the kernel and the bsd layer of osx. It is over 3/4 of osx(just minus all the osx gui stuff). They opensource all the changes they make to it and OpenBSD/FreeBSD has used many of them in their releases and Apple vice versa. Also apple hired Jordan Hubbard, who was head of FreeBSD development.

Other opensource apple releases:
Darwin (http://developer.apple.com/darwin/)
Qucktime Streaming Server (http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/streaming/)
Rendezvous (http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/rendezvous/)
Safari (http://www.apple.com/safari/)(KDE guys are very happy about this and all the apple changes are going to be included in the next version of Konquerer since apple's java implementation is 5x faster than the one they are using)

X11 (http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/download/)

Plus many other smaller oneshere:

Apple versions of: CUPS, Kerberos, CDSA, etc...

Having the guy who invented the internet on board is going to be a huge asset for Apple.

The next case design from Apple is going to look like the lock box.

Apple's next big project is going to be designing new user friendly vote counting machines.

Upon hearing the outcome of the vote, long time Mac loyalist Rush Limbaugh demanded a recount.

Gore's first order of buisness was dispatching Janet Reno to "take care of Gates."

The Apple fabrication plant is bracing itself for increased hardware failure due to beard hair.

Will the iMac replacement be the iGore?

I wonder if it will have a high speed internet connection??

Will they make a version with large keys for sale in Florida??

Wonder what would have happened if the board vote went the other way?

Sorry guys and gals, just kidding around. Might as well have some fun with this, he might well end up on the board here too...

Wonder what changes he would make to 'The Incredibles'??

Janet Reno refused the order as she's gay and has no interest in changing horses so to speak.

Array, i was just wondering. every time you post a news clip, which is a lot, you just post a link. but everytime you post a link to apple related news, you make a negative comment.. why is that?

KayosIII -- LOL!!!

Apple are fine, they have a great OS and easily the best looking cases. Apple are as opensource as a corporation is ever going to get. I agree with Array -- Darwin doesn't count.

If the kernel were open source i would be able to write an DE for Apple myself, but i am not able to. They don't allow that. They do allow you to 'add' to thier kernel.

Linux has an opensource kernel, Apple does not. They make money from you buying the OS/DE they put out. You have to buy that OS because there is no other way to control the mobo and chipset. Heck, Darwin/Aqua isn't even skinnable without some major league Unix hacking. Opensource they ain't despite what they report.

Adding Al Gore, or any political figure, seems to me the kind of statement that most companies would like to avoid -- especially when they are trying to expand to the entire US market and add credibility to thier image with the (mostly) conservative corporations. But it's thier dime and i'll still use 'em.
