What a great concept. If you can get a similar shape in 3d this should be a GREAT entry. Should be fun to texture as well.
I can't offer much feedback on the model itself, but you should keep a few things in mind:
If you aren't going to animate him, start thinking early on how you may want to pose him. Bulky characters can be a real pain to rig.
The same thing goes for hands. Nothing can wreck a good model faster than balloon hands. (When hands are modeled nice and flat then just have bones slapped in. This causes the fingers to deform in really ugly ways.) Consider modelling the hands in a clenched position even. :)
I can't wait to see what you do with the head.

Rhonedog: This is a dummy model just to see how I can get the cherry filling to appear, not the final model.
Here is the next update. I originally tried to do the cherries as a bump texture, but I couldn't get the rounded cherry-like appearance that I wanted. I finally had to sculpt seperate spheres for the cherries.
Like a pie, the front of this creature will be the checkerboard crust, but the back will be solid crust. I'm about to start on that, but what do you all think, should I put in more cherries? Some of the pictures I have downloaded of cherry pies and/or fillings have had more cherries in them. Let me know.

These are a couple of quick renders to get the texturing down for the pie crust and cherry filling. I would like to get these attributes down before I start the final modeling. What do you guys think?

really cool concept, some awesome potential here. i think you've got a good start on the surfacing but the filling doesn't feel oozy enough to me, its not wet enough. maybe bump up the specular more, create a sharper fall-off?
