View Full Version : using vocie-o-matic to drive a rig
focomoso 06-18-2007, 08:24 PM Anyone have any experience using voice-o-matic to drive a rig? I have a complex face rig with a custom gui. I want, if possible, to use voice-o-matic to drive the position of the gui shapes. The trouble is that voice-o-matic maps each viseme to a separate track. This makes sense if you're using a morph modifier where each pose has its own track, but in my case I have 10 different objects that all need to be positioned when a given viseme reaches 100%.
Any thoughts on how to translate the voice-o-matic weighted tracks to an array of position values?
Thanks in advance,
James

Drive dummy tracks and then wire your controls to those.

ok, no problem driving the dummy tracks. What i can't seem to get my head around is how i map the point2 position of each of my control objects to the 1d values of the dummy tracks. I thought of using a scipt controler, but i only want voice-o-motic to position the controls once, then i need the animators to be able to tweak them by hand.
The plan is to write a utility that will let the animators pos the mouth, save the state of the controls, and then recall it later, saving these states in custom attributes on a dummy parent to the controls. I need to map voice-o-matic to the predefined set of visemes. Is this making any sense?
I think i'm missing something simple, but of course, i have no idea what.

There are multiple ways to connect Voice-O-Matic to bones rig. Voice-O-Matic was designed from the ground up to not only work with morph targets but to also freely support any animatable bezier track in 3ds max, allowing one to control just about anything.
As Paul mentionned, one way is to use wire parameters and many other method do exist but they will all require some scripting or development on your end.
At Di-O-Matic, we have developped Pose-O-Matic (http://www.di-o-matic.com/products/Plugins/PoseOMatic/) to specifically adress the need of controlling bone based rig with Voice-O-Matic. We have many customers who are using Bones rig driven by Pose-O-Matic to do exactly what you are looking to achieve.
