Well I guess it's time to enter my first contest on CG Talk.

I think this will be alot of fun since I haven't animated in a while and still have alot to learn.

Anyway here is my story.

1st nshot - The Heroine Ember leaps down from a window high on the inside of a factory wall. She lands knocking aside a mop. We zoom in for a dramatic up shot as she raises up, raising her hands in a almost martial arts stance. "Now, Now I shall show you my power" her hands ignite with fire. The hand raised behind her head catches her hair on fire. she gives a start then begins spinning around smaking at her head. then she sees the buck next to her and dives her head in.

2nd shot - view from among bad guys watching her with her head in the bucket.

fade to black

well on to storyboard it.

like the story. I can see a lovely shampoo comercial hair wave happening prior to ignition

here's the storyboard

Whoops storyboard (http://www.byjason.com/media/whoops/whoops.html)

josephine: yeah I'll have to figure out what I can model and have look funny. I was thinking more spiky short hair...hair with lots of gel in it... Long beutiful hair could work too if I could figure out how to do it (have LW which has sasquatch lite built in)

But I'm open to ideas, keep em coming.

I dropped the cut since cuts are not allowed. I may add it back in for my own enjoyment after the contest...kind of a director's cut version.

Okay I finished modeling Ember.

Great model.

Loved the storyboard, really funny idea!

ed-it: Thanks.

Here is the colors and the proxy model for animation all setup. I'll spend the free time getting her hair ready and animate now with the proxy.

Both Models BTW were created off of a free male model that Joe Cosman did for the 10 second club. I did alot of rebuilding to get to the proxy. I then built the main model from the tweeked proxy although the head and hands built from scratched.

http://www.byjason.com/media/rigs.jpg

Thanks Joe for putting out your model for us to learn from.

I'll probably use them in the foreground for the zoom in passed the bad guys.

Here is Joe's model setup in the right colors. (yes this is what the female models came out of :D )

Now on to doing the staging (animatic to get the timing)

ok here is the first animation timing test I did.

Well After I finished an animatic up to her saying the line I realized that the rest of it I did not like. There was no way for her to dive head first into that bucket and it look good. So I'm redoing the ending.

I'll put it up in storyboard form later today.

HI
Those characeres look very good, nice design & mesh. thumbs up.
but the anim test, I know this is a PreViz...but I think it needs some works to do:
the camera moves very fast (maybe because of no ease in/out) & the character stands up in no time. so I think the timing must be re-done, with a little changes!
good luck

sketchyjay

wow I had alot of work. well i'm back and hope to catch up. It's been a race to learn the tools as I try to do the animation.

So far I know what I want to do and will thumb nail out all the key frames on my way to work. I'll see how far I get tomarrow.

Hey Sketchy, it looks thats even faster this time around.. u should hold her down for much longer to absorve the landing and then build up the standing up movement, even for a super hero would be hard to land from such a height and get up instantaneosly.

Cheers

how about this one...

damn it's hard to change the timing. glad I took this in a 1 second chunk and not the whole thing at once

think it is getting a little better

it still fells like she has some sort of spring like legs, shes projected upwards straight away, that lower position should be the follow trough, she should stay on her fours for a few moments and then go down again and finally up, so you'll have the antecipation for the raising movement. other wise it fells like shes made of some elastic rubber, unless that was what u had in mind, if thats the case what u need is a lot of squashe and stretche.
hope am being o any help..

sketchyjay
04-11-2003, 08:01 PM
Thanks Gru you are being of great help.

I am spacing those frames out so that I can have more room to make better keys. will post it later. LW is painful when trying to move keys. Takes forever for it to select all keys of an object. I'm going to plan it out on an x-sheet and make the space I need first.

thanks,

jay

Well I figured out how to move the timing using the scene editor so I have sped up my work.

ok version 8. I turned the splines back on to smooth it out and see the motion better. the hands are popping though so I still have to fix those channels.

Sure u getting there now, one thing i would do there would be to give a bit of antecipation b4 she gets up, bendig her head and back further forward/down and perhaps try to speed up the standing up move just a wee bit, keep the same timing though, just by antecipating the move will shorten the last action. Hmmm maybe am making u more confused...

Well done, just keep em coming.

Finally opened premiere and combined the animation and some sound to it. Still got a long way to go, but with one week left to do the body animations I thought I'd get the ball rolling on the premiere side.

Not too sure about her movements when the dialogue kicks in. Think there is too much of it? She is moving without acting... have to fix it.

Just realized I never put up the new storyboard.

basically it is as you see in the last animation. She tries to use her power and it cuts out. she tries again pushing and straining to get it back and lets out a termendous flaming angel instead (for those of you not in the know it is a ball of fire out the ass)

mortified she slides off

Jay

Jonesy
04-18-2003, 05:00 AM
I think you need her pelvis to drop lower on the landing, right now she just kinda stops when she hits the ground, she should drop down a bit more making her have to bend her arms and legs more to absorb the shock.

Also on the dialog, she should stick her chest out the way she does as she's saying the first "Now!" As if she's saying now with her whole body. Right now she sticks her chest out, then says "Now!"

When she gets up though, the way she shifts her weight to one foot then slides the other one back, that's great... I love that, very nice.

I also like the general character design, and the exaggerated anatomy, and proportions. The stories very funny as well.

Look forward to seeing more :)

sketchyjay
04-18-2003, 07:51 AM
thanks,

I am still trying to get the acting to the dialogue to work right. you can see between the two previous ones it was changed in spots. I noticed her puffing up seems odd. I expected to give her more of a hold before going into the dialogue but time limits made her dramatic pause into a random move that doesn't make any sense.

more to come....

Okay I fixed the landing and toyed with the render and some sound I got from some of the games sitting around on my HD.

Oops wrong size listed. it's 2.5 Megs

I think i'll just render out individual frames and work from there. That way I can save rerendering of work that is not changed.

let me know what you think,

Wow this is looking very good up to now. I like to read through threads and see how people work.

Whats intresting here is that from your first test up till now it shows how much u have learned.

Great Job.... finish it

sketchyjay
04-21-2003, 06:49 AM
thanks.

I started not knowing how to do ANY animation in LW to what you see here after 3 weeks of intense learning. Then again that was my whole motive for joining the competition. Get me up to speed in the software as well as learn how to apply animation techniques i've learned from assorted books and tapes.

It didn't help that I changed my story almost a week after I started modeling and animating and had to toss most of the first section along with the models that I made for it.

So far my work method has been to break it down into layers;

1. poses and timing
2. inbetweens
3. archs and cleanup

i've been doing 1 the most. There are no inbetweens on any of the animation after frame 40. so I have alot of work to finish up this week. Then the head animation for the last week.

The thing that has me a little worried is that I still have not made morph targets for the head.

I went through the dialogue and figured out just the phonemes that i'll need as well as the emotional shapes I'll need. It's like 12-13 shapes luckily so I should be able to churn them out in a night.

Tonight I'm thumbnailing the final part of the animation. Should have the final section in by late monday night.

Thanks again,

Jay

wow, you've done a great job on the drop-in! One thing I thought that looked a bit awkward though was when she says "power" and punches the air with her fists. If you try to do it the way she does it (I did :p) , it feels really.. just wrong. Maybe think about how she's saying it and really emphasise the tension of the moment. Keep it up

04-21-2003, 11:30 PM
The drop in is VERY nice. Maybe you want to make her look up in the air when she got her arms up in the air while saying the work "Power". This is just a suggestion. Hope it helps!

I look forward to your final animation.

here is a render of Ember. still have to add the emblem to her chest but she is pretty much done.

http://www.byjason.com/images/embermark2.jpg

yeah the hand waving didn't fit after I did it. It's been dropped. I am animating all the way to the end before posting this next version. The sound is in and it is pretty funny seeing it come together. will try to post soon.

Here is another render. This one larger so you can see more.

Some more clean up and fixed the colors and lights to make her stand out of the background.

Got to play up the effort of her trying to stop the fire going out. And the facial animation.

Will be working on the Morph Targets tonight.

Maybe smoke coming off her rear would have made it even funnier.

thanks,

yeah smoke was in the plans but I am just learning Lightwave and couldn't figure it out in time....

I'll probably give the whole thing another going over after to add the smoke and even make it a little longer so I can add back in the beginning from the storyboard.
