i'm using the C4D 8 demo and have a hard time making cuts where I want.. in LW i can add edges and make cuts wherever i want in a certain polygon, in Max it's even easier ... how can i do this in C4D ?? is there a better tool than knife? in the image i wanted to make one cut in the red poly and it created cuts around it also...

something tells me you are gonna have to wait for ngons dude.

also correct me if i am wrong but if you try and use a hyper nurbs type thingy in LW ngons will not work.

well yeah if it has more than 4 verts or less than 3 but in this case it would create 4 sides(points) so it should work, and anyways in C4d it doesnt matter i just want the cuts to go in the poly that i have selected and that's not working..

plus in lightwave if i have a poly that has more than 4 sides, all i do is run polydivide and it divides it into 3 and 4 sides so I can subpatch...

i just want to create cuts like i can in LW .... can i ??

I havent used LW but its pretty simple

if you have 5 points they cant make a quad or a tri

three points = tri four points=quad five points = penta

so...

5 points = ngons = cinema doesnt have. if you want a clean cut you are gonna have to cut the whole surface all the way around.

look at he top area circled in your pic there are 5 points.

also LW may not be quite so good as it seems

they have quote "partial support of ngons.

however maya does have full support of ngons. but alot of maya people dont use them anyway.
I hear they deform badly.

Deja vu! The answer is still: no! But try the new edge tools- press ctrl when cutting the edges. Will still produce tris.

that's not good then.. i want to make a cut just in that one piece and i can do this in LW, and max...

the issue is that if i create a cut like in the image and it makes extra cuts around the other polys, that means i can't make a cut the way i want in the poly next to it since it already made it's own cut... :(

i'll try to model something and see if this is really something i would need or not thx

what you are seeing is not extra cuts, but splits. Cinema automatically splits the surrounding poly's so that they're back down to being below 5 sided (3 and 4 sided). If you really want to just cut that one polygon, then what yous hould do is make your selection and then go

Structure->Edit Surface->Disconnect

This will actually seperate teh polys for you then you cna knife away as much as you want without disturbing any other polys, when you want to rejoin all the polys again just deselect all or select all then go

Structure->Optimise

The polys will be welded back together where points are together and away you go.

you can also just use add points of course this adds tris but for things like nostrals it can help, and it will make everything self contained.
