Absolutely amazing!!!

I especially loved the black and white silent film type animation and the cannon at the end :D

solid reel

I like how the desk is so cluttered, alone as just one picture I thought it was too cluttered, but during the animation it totally worked. :)

keep it up

I really liked it, interesting concept for the presentation. That scientist guy talking though was a bit strange, I'm sure the weird way he moved was intentional, but to me it didn't seem as strong as a lot of the other things (just my own opinion). I also would have liked it to stay a big longer on some of the pieces (like the black and white one), but again, that's my own personal taste in editing.

The channel zapping is a nice way to present your reel, but right now the presentation is taking away too much from the reel itself, because we can't see the animation properly.

I'd zoom in on the TV after 10-20 seconds, perhaps with only a small border of the TV still visible. Just before the ending you could zoom out again. Personally I'd also add some music.
Right now 75% of your screen space is wasted, and the animation itself is in thumbnail size, making it really hard to see how good it is.

loved it... makes me want to see all the individual animations on it in full now. great job.

Hoi Jo!
Ein wirklich gutes showreel! Würd dich (euch? wie viele seid ihr denn?) sofort einstellen, hehe.
Erzähl mal, wie du das gemacht hast. Welche Software wurde benutzt, wie lange habt ihr dran gesessen?

Bin echt beeindruckt! Wo habt ihr das gelernt? Das ist echt Spitzenqualität! :applause:

We planned the zoom but couldn't do it in 3D yet due to time reasons. but i'm sure reel 02 03 will have that. :) c u.

I loved the animation and the visuals. wonderful work.

but the "KKKSSHHHHHHHH!" sound when it changes from channel to channel made me turn the movie off

t was much much much too loud.

I could have turned off the sound perhaps, but I shouldnt have to.

it was soo loud. it hurt my ears.

Haha!

Okay I've seen it now to.

That Channel Zip Sound sucks, sorry, but I don't like it!

The rest of the clips is very cool!!!
Some of the sounds / voices are from TV Shows, right ?

I also agree with Marcel. Would be better to ZOOM to the Screen!!!

...have read an article about one of the presented project in 'digital production'-mag. I really like this Woody Allen-like character.
BUT this reel is absolutey coooooool. great concept of presenting the work. not the usual 'boring' stuff.

I totally agree with roarty. That sound really hurt my ears and took away from the reel. The animations were good but the sound just made it seem a bit annoying. Great job though!

The animation was great and the characters were really, really fun. Love your work! I'd really like to see the animations that were created shown in full.

My question is, "Why do the channels flip like it's a remote controlled television when there are dials on the front of the TV?"

It might be one more reason to zoom in to the screen so you don't have the discontinuity and you can also avoid animating a hand flipping the channels on the dial or to avoid modeling a newer television set. It just doesn't make sense that the television changes channels while the dials don't move.

No crits really...I kinda agree that you could slowly pan in possibly but it was really well done as a quick job (as u say). Channel zip is fine to me....but maybe a little too loud? Tell us more about Soul Cage Dept. Great stuff. Cheers!

the channel zip is too loud and too fast, made me want to close the movie before it finished.

Well Done!
I also think you should pan in. Especially for your online-reel. It might work on pal resolution but with the small online resolution you can hardly see anything. You could make an extra version for the online reel and zoom for this one only. Then it's no problem to do it 2D.

I have also read the article in digital production magazine and I love your characters.
And for all those out there who only know this tiny reel:
The characters look even better on high res!

Beautifull stuff.
Are you guys still using Animation Master? If so you should tell the AM community about this we could do with the inspiration!

Again, I love your work. This is what animation should be about!!!

Great reel, I long to see the black and white segment in full.

03-20-2003, 11:12 AM
wow, thanks for your comments and compliments. :D

some of you said that the zapp-sound was annoying. we'll propably fix it. but in my opinion, i like it that rough.

btw. we first wanted dr. klob (the unhealthy scientist) to stand behind the tv manually switching the channels. but we prefered to model a remote controlled vcr wich unfortunally is standing on the floor and therefore is not visible to you viewers. :lightbulb

a 2d zoom is a good possibility to show more. but we still want the reel to make people curious, to find out who's interested and who's not...

the soulcage department is a production company situated in bremen germany, doing commercials and, if there is time enough, festival films.

ah, and yes, most of the stuff is done with animation master. but we also used max and c4d on some projects. we just started with lightwave and messiah, to find out if that is the tool of our choice for the future...

i noticed that several people were asking for the black and white silent movie...
It's called "on the sunny side of the street"
But it's not possible to upload it yet, cause there is this big and quite annoying record company, wich is not very cooperative. so we'll have to finde royality free sound or something to avoid loyal stress...:hmm: suggestions welcome...
we are working on it and i hope to put it online soon.

Great stuff really liked it. Please let us know how you find Lightwave and Messiah after using AM so much you can give us a great view on them both.

I would if I knew LW and Messiah better.
We've got em about a month ago. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to get into them enough. But that is definitly the next step. And I'm really looking forward to do so.

Hi

Im new to 3d and Hash and I saw your demo reel - awesome work. Can I ask a few questions :> How did you find using AM for the reel? Animating with it and render quality? Is AM good enough for pro work? How does it compare to C4d and Max since you use them all? If AM is good why are you going to LW for the future? Im asking ebcause I am new and want to make sure that I didnt screw up buying AM. Did I? Should I look at LW or C4d and Max? What about AM is making you look at LW? How did you create the cool black and white look? Did you use After Effects at all? Thanks for reading all my questions. Thanks!

Jo B.

first of all i think AM is a genious program. it's simplicity makes it so strong. we actally bought it cause of it's low price. the problem was that we nearly lost our latest project, cause of the not really existing stability of AM 9.0 and 9.5. All our projects were messed up after a while and we lost a lot of time by getting them right again by opening the code in an editor and fixing them by hand.
Another problem was that we couldn't save several adjustments we did in the choreography. So we had to write all adjustments down and readjust em before every rendering. That also took a lot of time. Version 8.5 was much better.
I don't know version 10 yet. Maybe they fixed that...

Lightwave also looks good to us cause of it's price and it's incredible renderer. We also look forward to animate with messiah.

3D Max is far to expensive and i don't really like the Modifierstack.

C4D (Version 6) seemed quite good to me, but i was a bit limited for character animation.

And yes, we used After Effects, cause we have it here in our academy. And i like using it.

For the black and white look:
We rendered with a high conrast, wrote some aftereffects skripts for defocus, brightnes and image movement. we addad noise and dirt layers to it. We dublicated the movie, keyed all the dark areas out and used vertical blur and glow on it and lay it on top of it all.

I hope i answerd your questions. It's a bit hard to explain every detail.
