This is my first fully rendered scene, and would love some critiques, esp. on the shading/lighting/rendering (as that was what I spent the most time on).

Thanks

Hmmm, I can't see very much :hmm:

How about more reflection for the water, reflection from a moon AND from the light in the scene!

Shading, can't see any shading! Sorry, but all I see is the volume light, a black object and the water...

Go back and tunne the light setup and the surfaces (water!)

that's all...Cya.

Zach:

I'm a noob too, so welcome to the club. :) I like your concept for the scene. This is a great start! But 2 things aside from what Daniel has posted:

1) Is there some way you could make more of the background come in focus? Sometimes out of focus objects can be used to accentuate something in the scene, but here the bluriness of the background seems unecessary. Might be a "depth of field" issue with your camera. . .

2) I can't say what it is exactly, but something seems a little off about the canoe/boat in the foreground. . .Maybe it's depth seems to shallow? It doesn't seem like it's deep enough for someone to sit in. . .Do you know what I mean?

Keep it comin'!!!!

Mike

maybe your monitor is too dark Daniel, or mine is too bright...

wouldnt want the scene too much brighter considering it's just a lamp and moonlight :)

Okay, I've chekd it again (now it's dark outside, no backlight on my monitor).

But I still miss some reflection on the water!
And the "DoF" Effect look bad... I just see blur things behind the light.

bah...enough...Cya. ;)

I agree that the depth of feild is too much, will fix....
The main lamp is over-exposed, which makes the rest of the image seem darker than it is, so I'll turn that down too.
I have actually already made the boat look somewhat better just by making the waves on the water the size they should be, rather than huge like deep-ocean waves, I'll get a better render up soon as I can.

Thanks for all the input, very helpful

Here is a new render. I seem to have lost most of the background, and I can't seem to figure out how to do the moon reflection. Any tips?

I think the water looks a bit better, but I don't think this was much of an improvement... I'll try again later.
