If been attempting to recreate this good piece of work using afterburn
and was getting stuck with a few things does anyone have tips for recreating this.
materials is fine but the shape and fluidity of the movement is proving tricky.

Something like that is generally done with particles linked to toruses... you can animate the rotation parameter to create the rolling motion, then have another set of particles moving up a cylinder to create the main particles moving up through. If you need an actual tutorial, there is one included on the lots of robots dvd that goes in depth for the effect.

True, but the one on that DVD is no where near as good as the above YouTube link.

hehe... I've never actually seen the tut, but from what I can see the technique is probably very similar... it just takes more time to take it to the next level

I've tried messaging that guy a few times on youtube, to ask him if he would share the scene file with me to see how it was done. He ignores all of my messages. I don't understand why some CG artist will not share their works with others, so that others can learn.

If you really want to learn ask for tips pointers and tools that were used. Asking for someone else's work is simply lazy in my opinion. I remember when I took a local college class I was leaving and forgot my zip drive and I went back in and caught students in the process of copying my projects off the pc I used. Thankfully the majority of stuff I was deleting and copying to my disk(which I always had) but I am glad I left my drive otherwise I never would have found out.

ehh i think your right in a truely finished scene. what he was asking for was a test that someone did (a test) not stuff for a client per say. what he had asked for was more or less harmless. sure the guy did the work and he also has the right to say no. but i can bet my money on it what he had done he had some help learning fume from someone. pixalmagic im sure wasent trying to rip off anyones work anyone who hangs out here knows pixalmagics work speaks for it self. and in anycase pixalmagic the guy might be out on vacation or maybe Allan looked him up for the project he was talking about a few pages back and he is just super busy.

I did not realise asking for someone's scene file is wrong, and I hope he was not offended. I do not mind sharing my scene files with other people so that they can learn from my work. I most certainly had no intention of ripping off his work.
And it also was not being lazy, as I have worked for almost a year trying to get a decent nuke with Max and Afterburn. I got a pretty fine shader, but my animation is not the best. I simply wanted to view his animation settings to see how the scene was constructed, and hope to learn from it.

ALL MINE ALLLLL MINE!!!
I see what you guys are saying about asking for files, but some of it is that we are like a community here, and that guy has probably never seen your name -- whereas as long as I'm allowed to, I'll share just about any info I can with you guys.. the guy should have at least messaged Daniel back though -- that's way more rude. The least he could say is "sorry i'd like to keep it personal for fear of losing my work to others"
Feldy: the guy you're thinking of with allan is a fume guy -- not the same one -- this one was done with afterburn... so he's probably not too busy to reply to Daniel :)
