Hello,

Hopefully I can do Vader, The links for the available models from the movies are not working for me and I don't see anybody else doing him. I have started anyway but haven't taken many progress shots , meant to take some but got carried away and forgot. Just started yesterday and haven't gotten to far so I think there shouldn't be any confusion as to whether or not this model is from scratch. Right now just blocking everything out so not much detail.

Here is everything so far :

Here are the boxes that go on the belt

Here is the control box on his chest

Here is a close up of the upper body, missing alot of stuff but just trying to block the whole character out first with few details.

The plan is to do a scene from the Luke vs Vader at the end of the empire strikes back. This is definetly the most complicated project I have done so far so should be interesting. After seeing the other threads for this there are going to be some really great scenes, can't wait to see the final products.

An excellent choice of character. A great visual from that scene is Vader reaching out to Luke after cutting his arm off, and then clenching his fist as he talks about ruling the galaxy as father and son. Plus, it would save you from having to model one of Luke's hands. :D

I'm sure you already know this, but when you're looking for reference, be careful with Vader. His costume, particularly in the neck area, changed frequently from film to film. Good luck!

I'm suprised that not many of us decided to do stuff from the empire. And even more suprised that Vader wasn't one of the most built characters.
What you've done so far looks great..stick with it:thumbsup:

If you look up Vaderpainter and maybe some other fan costume sites, I believe you will find some great reference pictures. I've seen some very detailed 'real' Vader and fan Vader reference images out there on the web.
Your work looks good so far! Keep going!

Hello,

Just a little update have worked a little on the shape of the body, added some hands. On the mask I added the cylinder looking part along the bottom of the mask along what would be the chin and the little things that stick out of them. I also am moving from silo2 into XSI so spent a little time creating a hiearchy of the objects and placed them all into an xsi model. Also I see someone else had already started a luke/vader scene so I am thinking I should change my scene.

Hello,

Thanks for the vaderpainter ref , interesting site makes me want to get a Decent Vader costume just for the hell of it. Haven't really decided on a scene yet but want to make sure its something I can get done so I might just do an action pose or something really simple.

Another update. Added some more to the face mask (the mouth grill, the bit the goes in the nose and changed tweaked the mask a little by making the circular part on top of the face triangle bigger) , the helmet (added the stripe going along the top, tweaked the shape a little, and added some thickness), and on the shoulder guard added the ridges.

I don't know if you want to take this to another software like z-brush or not?
at this stage the only thing I can say is the helmet looks bigger than the head.
specially in front view.
this is the best website I've seen about Star Wars helmets:

good luck

Hello,

Thanks for the comments. shahabp good call on the helmet I changed that to look better and worked some more on the mask, I think it looks a little better now. Haven't figured out how I am going to do the body yet with that kind of bumpy surface. I was thinking that just uv unwrapping the model and then paint a displacement map in a 2d program might be the way to go. I also have ZBrush and thought about doing it there but seems like overkill and much more difficult to do what is really a simple pattern. Any advice as to what would be the best?
